battle brewing over goodwin liu

As you know, President Obama recently nominated Berkeley law professor Goodwin Liu to the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco. But wait, how do Republicans feel about this nomination? The headline pretty much sums it up: Obama has plans for Asian-American judge, and GOP isn't happy.

Why the distress? Critics fear that President Obama could be preparing Liu for a historic appointment: the first Asian American on the U.S. Supreme Court. Hey, it could happen. And with his solidly liberal credentials, Liu would be an inspired choice. (Yes, I lean left; deal with it.)

He would also be an extremely controversial choice. For now, Liu faces a difficult confirmation fight as the Senate Judiciary Committee prepares to take up his nomination. He's well respected, and has considerable backing, but no doubt, it's going to be a fight. A hearing is set for this week, April 16.
