Whoa. Crazy news out of Hawaii, where a lucky driver missed getting seriously hurt when a surfboard crashed through his windshield: Driver feels lucky to have survived after surfboard pierces windshield.
No joke. Jerrin Chin was driving on the H-1 Freeway in Honolulu when large pieces of a surfboard came flying out of nowhere and straight into his car. The board came crashing through his windshield and came within inches of his head, but he walked away with just a few scratches on his arms and face.
The accident happened on the H-1 Freeway in the eastbound direction, just past the Punahou Overpass, about 10:45 a.m. Sunday.Damn. And the car Jerrin was driving wasn't even his! The car belonged to his girlfriend, who was out of town. I guess he had some explaining to do. But hey, there's only so much you can explain about an errant airborne surfboard coming out of nowhere and almost impaling you on the freeway.
Ching, who lives in Moanalua, was on his way to pick up his friend at UH.
"And I was in the far left lane and there was a bus in the middle lane, and all of a sudden I see this red thing come out of nowhere and turns out it was a surfboard. And it just crashed through my windshield," Ching said.
He says the surfboard came within a few inches of his face. The glass prevented it from going all the way through.
"Yeah, someone was watching over me," Ching said.
Witnesses told police they saw the surfboard fall off the overpass, then it bounced off the school bus.
"Then that's when it came to me. Yeah, kind of freak accident," Ching said.
As for the surfboard itself, that's still a mystery. If anyone out there wants to claim it, Jerrin (and Honolulu Police) would like to talk to you. You almost killed a guy.
