Broadway star Ruthie Ann Miles injured, 4-year-old daughter killed in car crash

Tony Award-winning Broadway actress Ruthie Ann Miles was in critical condition Monday after she was struck by a car in Brooklyn in an accident that killed her 4-year-old daughter and another child.

Miles was walking with a friend, Lauren Lew, and their kids in Park Slope when a white Volvo reportedly ran a red light, drove through the intersection and plowed through a crowd of people in the crosswalk. Miles and Lew were both injured in the crash. Miles' 4-year-old daughter Abigail and Lew's 1-year-old son Joshua were killed. A fifth victim, a 46-year-old man, was also hit.

Miles, who is currently expecting her second child, was critically injured but listed in stable condition.

Two Bay Area families were on route to a vacation in Southern California on Tuesday when a big rig struck their minivan on the 5 Freeway, sending it off the road where it caught fire. Two women and four children died.

The minivan had gotten into a minor accident with another car, and they pulled over to the shoulder to inspect the damage. That's when a semi-truck slammed into the back of the minivan, propelling it completely off the road. It tumbled down a steep embankment with all eight passengers inside.

The two fathers sitting in the front, 34-year-old Aaron Hon Wing Ng and 45-year-old Wei Xiong Li, jumped out of the two front doors as the car burst into flames and attempted to pry open the back doors, but they were stuck. Both men suffered serious burns to their arms while trying to rescue their loved ones.

On Thursday, Yeun and Reedus were apparently riding motorcycles in Peachtree City, Georgia when they witnessed an auto accident and pulled over to help out. A witness snapped a photo of the two actors, who appeared to be trying to help, next to wrecked cars at the site of the crash.

14-year-old Dragon Kim and 15-year-old Justin Lee were killed when a tree limb fell on their tent.



Some terrible, tragic news out California, where two teenage friends were killed when a large tree limb fell on their tent while they were camping in Yosemite Valley last week. The campers were identified as 14-year-old Dragon Kim of Tustin and 15-year-old Justin Lee of Irvine.

The branch fell from an oak tree early Friday morning while the boys were sleeping at the Upper Pines Campground. The boys were friends, and were on a camping vacation with family. According to the National Park Service, by the time park rangers arrived, both campers had died from their injuries.

Kim was a sophomore at Orange County School of the Arts in Santa Ana, where Lee was set to start as an incoming freshman next week. Kim's parents, who were camping with the boys, posted a message about their son's death to his friends and teammates at the Northwood Water Polo Club:

In San Jose, authorities have identified the 20-year-old man who was killed when two cars collided with him on the freeway on Saturday. Daniel Nhan was apparently struck while walking on the busy highway.

On Saturday night, California Highway Patrol officers responded to reports of a pedestrian in the roadway on Highway 280, just north of Highway 101. Nhan was found dead in a northbound lane after being hit by two vehicles. Both drivers reportedly stayed on the scene after the accident.

On October 6, 2013, 3-year-old Allison Liao was crossing Main Street in Flushing with her grandmother when she was struck and killed by a SUV making a left turn. The Queens District Attorney declined to prosecute the driver, Ahmed Abu-Zayedeh, because he wasn't impaired or intoxicated. But he was issued two traffic tickets: failure to yield to a pedestrian and failure to use due care.

23-year-old Lance Cpl. Andrew Silva was riding in Fremont when he was hit by a Mini Cooper speeding in excess of 80 miles per hour, throwing him from his bike. He died at the scene. Silva, who was married with a young son, had just returned last month after serving a one-year tour in Helmand Province.

The driver, 23-year-old Alexander Yohn, was arrested and booked on suspicion of gross vehicular manslaughter while intoxicated and hit-and-run causing death or injury.

In Los Angeles, thousands gathered at a memorial service to mourn and pay their last respects to a decorated veteran LAPD officer who was killed in the line duty in a traffic accident last week.

Fallen LAPD Officer Nicholas Lee remembered

40-year-old Nicholas Lee, a 16-year department veteran, was killed after his patrol car collided with a commercial dump truck at an intersection in Beverly Hills. It hasn't been determined what caused the crash, but officials are looking at whether the truck had mechanical problems.

Lee, a husband and father of two, is remembered as respected officer and a devoted family man.

Sophia Liu, who would have turned 7 years old today, was struck and killed while crossing the street on New Year's Eve. Her family was walking home from dinner in the Tenderloin neighborhood when a driver hit them as they were in crosswalk. Liu's mother Huan Kuang was seriously injured, and her younger brother was also hurt.

Parents from the children's school have started a fundraising drive to help Sophia's family cover costs in their of time of need. The fund has collected more than $11,000 for the family since Saturday.

Krista Nichols was found hanging at her grandmother's home on Sunday evening. According to authorities, she somehow attached some kind of rope to a hook meant for potted plants on her living room ceiling, then unintentionally hanged herself.

They're still waiting on the final ruling from the coroner's office, but there's reportedly nothing to indicate foul play. It appears that nobody was watching the girl at the time.

College student dies after jumping into mountain pool

19-year-old Kevin La was hiking with friends when the group jumped from rocks near Hermit Falls.

19-year-old Kevin La, a student at Cal State Fullerton, was hiking with a group of friends in the Angeles National Forest when several of them decided to jump from adjacent rocks into a popular pool in the Hermit Falls area.

La was one of thirteen people who jumped into the water, but appeared to be unconscious when he came to the surface. Members of the group attempted to perform CPR on La. He was airlifted to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

No joke. Jerrin Chin was driving on the H-1 Freeway in Honolulu when large pieces of a surfboard came flying out of nowhere and straight into his car. The board came crashing through his windshield and came within inches of his head, but he walked away with just a few scratches on his arms and face.

30-year-old Yingyi Li-Dikov, who was six months pregnant, was sitting on a bench at Kissena Park in Flushing when an uprooted oak tree fell and crushed her head and body. She was declared dead at the hospital:

LAPD has released dash-cam video footage of the collision, shot from the next lane over, that killed 90-year-old Joo Yoon when he was hit by a dark gray or gun-metal Nissan GT-R while crossing a Koreatown intersection on April 27. The video shows the Nissan hitting Yoon, waiting for a moment on the next block, then driving off:

Cyclist faces felony manslaughter charges in fatal crash

Last week in San Francisco Superior Court, a judge ruled that 36-year-old Chris Bucchere should face the felony charge for the collision that killed 71-year-old Sutchi Hui, who was walking with wife this through the intersection of Castro and Market streets when he was hit in March 2012:

Woman dies after 911 operator fails to put call in system

This is outrageous out of Arkansas... In Little Rock, a woman trapped inside a sinking vehicle died after a 911 operator did not properly enter her emergency call into a computer system to notify rescue dispatchers, causing a 43-minute delay in response: Ark. woman dies after 911 call not put in system.

39-year-old Jinglei Yi called 911 when her car hit a patch of ice, went over a curb and ended up in a pond. The 911 operator contacted an ambulance service, but failed to contact police officers and firefighters, who weren't dispatched until a half-hour later -- after the ambulance service called to verify that they were en route.

Yi died hours later at a local hospital, while her 5-year-old son is in critical condition. Meanwhile, the operator has been placed on paid administrative leave. What the hell happened?

79-year-old pedestrian killed while walking on freeway

Damn. Last week in San Jose, a 79-year-old man was struck and killed while walking in lanes of traffic on a busy freeway: San Jose man, 79, identified as person killed Friday while walking on freeway.

The victim was identified as Hyuk Joon Kim, who was spotted Friday night while walking in northbound traffic lanes on Highway 101 before being struck by a car. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Not much more information than that. According to California Highway Patrol officials, there were no other cars parked on the side of the road. Kim apparently got on 101 on foot, and may have been trying to cross the highway. Whatever the case, it's terrible.
