The Unicode Consortium, a non-profit that standardizes languages across digital platforms and devices, on Wednesday announced an upcoming launch of 62 new emoji in 2020, including a smiling face with tear, polar bear, seal, pickup truck, fondue, teapot, magic wand, beetle, piñata... and bubble tea!

Museum Of Chinese In America Archives "Very Much Salvageable"
Good news. The archives of the Museum of Chinese in America may be in better shape than feared, after a five-alarm fire destroyed part of the Chinatown building where they were kept last week. While the top floors of the building sustained heavy damage, the fire didn't reach the museum's archival rooms. When they were finally allowed to go back into the building, volunteers were able to recover hundreds of boxes of artifacts.

Christine Sun Kim Will Sign the National Anthem Alongside Demi Lovato During the Super Bowl
On Sunday, Christine Sun Kim will perform for an audience of nearly 100 million people watching the Super Bowl. The artist, known for her transgressive distillations of sound and language, will deliver her American Sign Language rendition of the National Anthem as the pop musician Demi Lovato sings from nearby on stage.

Dumplings are a seemingly universal food, taking various forms throughout the world's cultures. Poland has pierogi. Nepal has momos. Russia has pelmeni. Japan has gyoza. Italy has ravioli. Georgia has khinkali. Korea has mandoo. Argentina has empanadas. Jews have kreplach. China has potstickers. The U.S. has Hot Pockets.

There is a pizza emoji, a hamburder emoji and a taco emoji. There is also a range of emojis of Japanese foods including sushi, fish cake, rice ball and dango. But there is no dumpling emoji.

There should be a dumpling emoji.

But how do we make that happen? The Dumpling Emoji Project has done the research, and is taking the steps to not only bring the dumpling emoji to life but also pave the way for a more inclusive catalog of emojis.

Memoji Keyboard allows you to emojify yourself

So a lot of people were less than enthused by the weird yellow skin emoji that Apple recently unveiled. Johnny Lin, an ex-Apple engineer, was pretty disappointed and decided to do something about it. He created an app called Memoji Keyboard -- a better, more personalized way to send emojis.

Instead of pre-defined (and rather unsightly) skin colors, you use your own skin. In fact, it's your own face, emotions and expressions. The Memoji Keyboard allows you to create and send custom animated emojis of yourself doing the smiley face, sad face, thumbs up, and other emoji classics.

No, seriously. What is up with the yellow skin emoji?

Apple introduces new "racially diverse" emoji, including a gross shade of yellow.


In a new beta version of its operating system, Apple recently revealed a new set of "racial diverse" emoji, featuring faces in a variety of skin tones. So I join the chorus and ask: what is up with that awful sickly shade of yellow? Is that supposed to be an Asian face? Because those faces do not look healthy.

There's been a demand for more inclusive emoji that reflects the diversity of the world's skin tones. Or at least some options other than the limited set of lily-white icons currently featured in iOS. So I applaud the effort.

But dude. That yellow is gross.
