incumbent jun choi loses edison mayoral primary in upset

Oh man. Last night in Edison, New Jersey, two-term Councilwoman Antonia Ricigliano, who had the backing of the township's Democratic Committee as well as the local police union, won the party's nomination for mayor, beating incumbent Jun Choi in an upset primary victory: Incumbent Choi loses mayoral primary in Edison upset.

Ricigliano received 6,582 votes -- 378 more than Choi, according to unofficial results from the township clerk. Choi blamed the loss on negative campaigning, but says he will not run as an independent, calling himself a lifelong Democrat. More here: Ricigliano ousts Choi, wins Democratic nomination for Edison mayoral seat.

Back in 2005, it was Choi who pulled the upset victory, bating three-term mayor George Spadoro in the Democratic primary. He went on to become the township's youngest and first Asian American mayor. Last night's loss has got to be a bit of a bummer to those who had high hopes for Choi.
