Attention, poets! Haymarket Books invites Asian American and Pacific Islander poets, spoken word poets, slam poets, and poets who consider themselves part of various oral traditions to submit their work for an anthology of AAPI spoken word, slam, and poetry of oral traditions to be published in 2024.

This anthology (title pending) seeks to celebrate poetry from the space where Asia, the Pacific, and “America” meet. This project seeks to interrogate what we mean when we say “AAPI poetry,” lean into the complexities of solidarity-building, and highlight what connects our stories. Gathering prominent spoken word artists of the 80s and 90s with contemporary voices in literary publishing, this collection makes a case for the importance of the oral tradition in accountings of Asian/Pacific American literary histories and futures. We seek an aesthetically, demographically, and politically diverse range of poetic work, with an ultimate commitment to fighting—and imagining beyond—imperialism across our diasporas. The editorial team of this anthology are Franny Choi, Terisa Siagatonu, No'u Revilla, and Bao Phi.

Call for Submissions: New Voices Award 2015

Lee & Low Books is accepting children's picture book manuscripts by writers of color.



Lee & Low Books, award-winning publisher of children's books, is accepting submissions for the sixteenth annual New Voices Award, to be given for a children's picture book manuscript by a writer of color. The contest encourages writers of color to submit their work to a publisher that takes pride in nurturing new talent.

The Award winner receives a cash prize of $1000 and Lee & Low's standard publication contract, including our basic advance and royalties for a first time author. An Honor Award winner will receive a cash prize of $500. Past winners include Juna's Jar by Jane Bahk and It Jes' Happened by Don Tate.

Call for Submissions: Time Traveling is Not for Everyone

Let's face it: time travel is for white people.



I love time travel stories. Whether it's Back to the Future or The Terminator, The Time Traveler's Wife or friggin' Hot Tub Time Machine, I'm a sucker for narratives about what happens when you travel through time.

But let's face it: time travel is for white people.

For people from underrepresented and minority communities, time travel could be more of a disaster than an adventure. Imagine, as an Asian American person in 2015, going back in time and landing in pretty much any era of our nation's brief history. I have to imagine it would be less than awesome. Just imagine it.

This is the founding idea behind Time Traveling is Not for Everyone, an anthology conceived by writers Heidi Durrow and Koji Steven Sakai who are accepting proposals for short stories featuring a character from an underrepresented community traveling to some time period before this one.

Hello, good readers! Calling all artists, illustrators, designers, doodlers and other folks of creative inclination. Next month marks another anniversary of this blog. Last year, to celebrate, we conducted a month-long Angryversary Art project, and it was a rousing success. So we're doing it again.

I've invited a handful of artists friends to submit their interpretations of the "Angry Asian Man" banner that sits up at the top of this website. So, every day next month, there will be a different artist's rendition of the banner.

But I need your help. In addition to the artists I've enlisted, I need more banners to fill in the rest of February's 28 days. So how about it? I know there are more than a few artistically talented readers out there. I invite you to submit your own Angryversary banner art, to be showcased at the top of this website.

Earlier this fall, the Center for Asian American Media launched Memories to Light: Asian American Home Movies, a project to collect and digitize home movie reels and share the stories they tell to a broad public. The initiative gives an inside look into the overlooked and traditionally private lives of everyday Asian Americans spanning six decades, from the 1920s to 1980s. Call for Submissions: 3rd Annual Project Catalyst

Project showcase seeks narrative feature films and original television pilots

Attention, filmmakers! Visual Communications, the nation's premier Asian Pacific American media arts organization, is now accepting submissions for the 3rd Annual Project Catalyst, to be held at the Directors Guild of America, May 3-4, during the 2014 Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.

Project Catalyst provides a unique opportunity for media creatives of Asian descent to showcase their project to studios, networks, financiers, producers, production companies, agents and managers. They are currently seeking submissions for narrative feature films and original television pilot projects.

Up to ten narrative creatives will be chosen for Project Catalyst. In addition to participating in the panels, a pitch session with the jury and one-on-one industry meetings, selectees will have the opportunity to meet with industry participants from the new media and interactive world looking for distinct and new voices.

Call for Submissions: Anthology of Asian and Pacific Islander Women's Experiences with Mental Illness

What are the untold stories of APIA women and mental health?

I recently got this call for submissions passed along to me... Editor Aileen Alfonso Duldulao is putting the call out to Asian and Pacific Islander women for essays, letters, interviews, poems and other reflections focusing on mental illness and mental health for an upcoming anthology, No Greater Agony.

The goal is to give voice to APIA women, whose stories and experiences with mental health and mental illness too often go untold. Here is some more information:

South Asian American Digital Archive seeks stories for the First Days Project

The South Asian American Digital Archive (SAADA) is a nonprofit organization working to document the rich histories of South Asians in the United States and preserve the community's stories for future generations.

SAADA is putting the call out for stories from South Asian Americans about their first day in the United States. The First Days Project captures poignant narratives from the lives of new immigrants through a snapshot of one day -- the excitement, nervousness, loss, humor, sadness, anticipation, confusion, and everything else that happens when one arrives in a new country.

First Day stories will be accepted through July 31 and can be submitted as video, audio or text. Here are some more details on what they're looking for:

Hyphen Call for Submissions: Fiction and Poetry

Hey, writers. Hyphen wants you! For their next issue, the Asian American news culture magazine is putting the call out for fiction and poetry submissions from talented APIA writers. The submission deadline is June 15.
