They Call Us The Menswear Guy

Jeff Yang and Phil Yu present an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America.

What's up, podcast listeners? We've got another episode of our podcast They Call Us Bruce. (Almost) each week, my good friend, writer/columnist Jeff Yang and I host an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America, with a strong focus on media, entertainment and popular culture.

In this episode, we welcome fashion industry commentator and writer Derek Guy, also known as "the menswear guy." He talks about how his interest in clothing and fashion led to his popular blog and social media persona; how his writing weaves together humor, history, cultural criticism, and political commentary to make fashion feel relevant to anyone; why terrible politicians are such easy targets for sartorial critique; and why he was compelled to speak out about anti-immigrant rhetoric and stereotyping -- making himself the target of the likes of J.D. Vance. Also: The Good, The Bad, and The WTF of being the menswear guy.

Steven Yeun’s Guide to Surviving a Zombie Apocalypse (at the Office)

Also: Looking cool as hell for GQ in a tweed suit.

It's been a long summer for fans of The Walking Dead, but we'll only have to wait a few more days to learn which character met their bloody end at the hands of the villainous Negan. Fans know that Glenn, played by Steven Yeun on AMC's hit undead drama, [SPOILER] dies in the comics, but maybe our favorite Asian American zombie apocalypse survivor will be spared? Hell, I don't even want to know. Put us out of our misery.

In the meantime, check out Steven suiting up in this fun feature for GQ, in which he outlines some important tips for surviving a zombie apocalypse at the office -- and looks sharp while doing it:

If you should ever find yourself fighting off walkers at the workplace, take note of Steven's tips. The guy has survived six season of The Walking Dead (so far), so I think he knows what he's talking about.

Check the Senior Street Style of 'Chinatown Pretty'

Blog and photo exhibition inspired by the unique elder fashion of San Francisco's Chinatown.

Chinatown Pretty is a fashion and storytelling project chronicling the street style of seniors living (and grocery shopping) in San Francisco's Chinatown. Because dude, let's face it, these elders have got some serious style.

"We're here to celebrate the ingenuity, flair, and beauty of San Francisco Chinatown and its longtime residents," the blog declares. "Chinatown Pretty brings us joy and we hope it will put a smile on your face too."

Photographer Andria Lo and writer Valerie Luu, "two friends who love dim sum and chasing after pretty po-pos," say they were inspired to create the project while Luu was living in Chinatown, when she would see silver-haired seniors looking hella fresh, rocking their own unique fashions.

Asian Humans of New York

Guest Post by Minh-Ha T. Pham

I'm on vacation! This week, I'm taking a much-needed break to recharge the batteries and get a change of scenery. To keep things going around here, I've enlisted the help of several friends of the blog to submit guest posts on various topics of their choosing. Here's one from Minh-Ha T. Pham, author of 'Asians Wear Clothes on the Internet: Race, Gender, and the Work of Personal Style Bloggin.'

My guest post pays tribute to New York City, with a special focus on my home borough of Brooklyn. In it, I spotlight Asian New Yorkers in the fields of fashion, food, and photography. Here are their stories, told mostly in their own words. (All photos are used with permission and courtesy of the featured individuals unless otherwise noted.)

I will cut someone in this Target for a Phillip Lim handbag.

What happens when Phillip Lim launches his new line at Target? Limsanity.

On Sunday, Target released the much-anticipated 3.1 Phillip Lim collection, offering an appealing line of modestly-priced designer handbags, clothing and other accessories. But if you weren't there when stores opened at 8:00am, chances are, ya got nuthin': At Target, shoppers scramble for 3.1 Phillip Lim bags.

Stores were pretty much ransacked. Phillip Lim racks were reportedly stripped clean just ten minutes after opening. According to the Los Angeles Times, shoppers at the Target store in West Hollywood were relatively civil and polite to one another... until employees rolled out an additional pallet of handbags to re-up.

Then shit got real.

Here's video of what a full-blown handbag swarm looks like:

Watch people lose their sh*t when Alexander Wang gives away free clothes

On the day of the event, curious fans were greeted with a video message from Wang, who revealed that when the doors opened, attendees would have exclusive access to pieces from the "T by Alexander Wang" collection. Oh, and everything was free. No shopping bags or carts, just whatever you could physically take.

Here's the video of folks losing their minds over some free Alexander Wang:
