The timeless, international symbol for "chink"


This is Adriano Jauvel and Or Daniel. They are models or actors or something, and apparently enjoy some degree of celebrity in Israel. (As far as my research indicates, Ms. Daniel appeared on a season of the country's version of Big Brother.) During their recent travels to the Philippines, they decided to commemorate their layover at Seoul Incheon International Airport by taking this hi-larious photo and posting it on Instagram.

According to Facebook, the caption translates to "Trying to blend in with the landscape."

The photo apparently attracted the ire of many angry commenters, to the point that Daniels was compelled to change her Instagram settings to private. But the offending image can still be seen on Facebook.

Celebrity or otherwise, why are dumbass people around the world so eager to make this racist gesture -- the timeless, international symbol for "chink" -- in the presence of Asians?

Rapper Joe Budden posts racist photo of Sikh man

"Not on my watch Homeboy!"

Seriously? Rapper Joe Budden was recently at the airport when he saw an elderly bearded Sikh man in a turban going through the security checkpoint. He snapped a photo of the gentleman with the caption "Not on my watch Homeboy!" -- the insinuation, of course, is that this man is a terrorist.

The photo, posted to Instagram, drew the ire of folks who called Budden's comments "racism and ignorance at its finest." The rapper was initially unapologetic, telling his critics to "lighten up," but then later changed his tune and apologized for his comments via Twitter:

At this point in the year, my brain is shutting down, I'm stuffing my face and settling into a state of personal reflection and Twilight Zone reruns. So when something like this comes across my desk, I'm feeling more annoyed than anything else. We couldn't close out the year without some more ignorant social media s%*t?

Questlove and Padma Lakshmi Under Fire for 'Racist' Asian Jokes

From personalities I kind of like, no less. Musician Aamir "Questlove" Thompson of The Roots and model/Top Chef host Padma Lakshmi have recently got into some trouble for comments exchanged on Twitter regarding Quest's travels through Japan, where The Roots are currently on tour. Somewhere along the way, he snapped a photo and just had to throw in the joke about the stereotypical, mixed-up mispronunciation of Ls and Rs.

Eye roll. But then his manager Dawn Englehart (who is of Asian descent) and Padma joined in:

Thought I'd share this striking Instagram photo that came my way... That's Doug Baldwin, wide receiver for the Seattle Seahawks, flying the flag of the Philippines before Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings, in an effort to honor victims of Typhoon Haiyan and draw attention to disaster relief efforts (yes, the flag is upside down -- to signify the country in a state of emergency).

The Seahawks partnered with the American Red Cross to collect cash donations from fans at Sunday's game. Fans are also invite to donate online through the American Red Cross' disaster relief fund here.

Baldwin has numerous relatives ("too many to count") living in the Philippines, including his mother's mother: Philippine crisis hits Seahawks WR Baldwin personally.

Jim Lee's rejection letters from Marvel and DC

Artist, writer and editor Jim Lee, co-publisher of DC Comics, is hands-down one of the most important figures in the comic book industry. He's had a hand in creating some of the medium's most iconic characters and stories, and his unique style and technique have influenced a generation of artists.

To this fanboy, he's a personal hero -- not only as a comic book professional, but also as one of the first Korean Americans I ever saw working in a nontraditional, creative career. He's the best.

But he wasn't always at the top of the game. While cleaning out some file cabinets, Jim recently came across a bunch of old rejection letters he received as a young hungry artist trying to break into the biz. Naturally, he snapped photos of the notes -- correspondence from both DC and Marvel Comics -- and posted them on Instagram. They're definitely humble evidence that even the greats must start at the bottom.
