This Virginia Tech flyer for international students doesn't feature any actual international students

Perpetual foreigner syndrome strikes again!



Virginia Tech recently printed up a promotional flyer urging international students to complete an upcoming survey to help make the campus better for international students. The flyer, posted around campus, featured a photo of smiling Asian students at Virginia Tech. You know, international students. Cool, right?

There's just one problem: none of the students in the photo are international students.

If you're wondering what the problem is, it looks like these students just got inadvertently smacked in the face with the perpetual foreigner stereotype -- the idea that no matter how long or how much or how far Asian Americans make our way in this country, we'll always be perceived as foreign -- never quite enough American.

In this case, whoever put together this flyer saw a photo of a bunch of Asians kids at Virginia Tech and erroneously assumed they must be international students. Not the kind from "here."

This week in Virginia, a college student was arrested after posting a threatening message on social media warning of an upcoming event similar to the 2007 mass shooting on the Virginia Tech campus.

21-year-old Kiung Moon, a senior majoring in business information technology at Virginia Tech, posted a message on Yik Yak on Tuesday night warning of "another 4.16 moment." The Virginia Tech and the Blacksburg police departments were alerted to the posting and immediately launched an investigation.

According to Blacksburg police, Moon turned himself in at the Virginia Tech Police Department and was taken into custody the next afternoon.

Research Study: Asian Americans caring for aging parents

Seeking participants for a Virginia Tech graduate thesis study

I recently heard from May Kanti, a master's student in the Marriage & Family Therapy program at Virginia Tech. Her thesis research is about the experience of 1.5- and 2nd-generation Asian Americans caring for elderly parents, and she's looking for folks to participate in a research study.

The study entails a 10-minute telephone screening, a brief demographic questionnaire, and one-hour interview (in-person, over the phone or via Skype) about your experience as an Asian American caring for your parent.
