Elodie Yung cast as Elektra in 'Marvel's Daredevil'

'G.I. Joe: Retaliation' actress will play "a mysterious woman" from Matt Murdock's past.

Marvel has announced that French actress Elodie Yung has been cast as Elektra in the upcoming second season of the Netflix original series Daredevil, based on the popular Marvel Comics superhero.

Elektra is described as "a mysterious woman from Matt Murdock's past whose dangerous and exotic ways may be more than he can handle." The first season of Daredevil made reference to a certain "Greek girl" in a flashback scene, which fans recognized as a nod to one of Daredevil's most popular characters.

Created by Frank Miller in 1981, Elektra Natchios first appeared in Daredevil #168. In addition to being one of Daredevil's fan-favorite romantic interests, she is a deadly sai-wielding ninja assassin. Jennifer Garner played the character in the 2003 movie version of Daredevil, and reprised the role for the 2005 spinoff Elektra.

You know, I just remembered. Somewhere back home in my parents' garage, stashed in a musty box, I have a copy of Daredevil #181, in which Elektra dies at the hands of the murderous Bullseye. (She came back to life, years later, as comic book characters often have a habit of doing.)

Elodie Yung, who is of French and Cambodian descent, appeared as another crimson-clad ninja, Jinx, in 2013's G.I. Joe: Retaliation. She was also rumored to be on the short list of contenders to play Wonder Woman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. (The part ultimately went to Gal Gadot.)

All things considered -- even her lack of Greek heritage -- I think she's pretty damn perfect to play Elektra.

"After a worldwide search, we found in Elodie the perfect actress to embody both Elektra's impressive and deadly physicality, as well as her psychological complexity," said Executive Producer and Head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb. "Paired with Charlie as Matt Murdock, the two will bring one of the most beloved and tumultuous comic book relationships to life with all the accompanying sparks and spectacular action sequences the show is known for."

Season two of Marvel's Daredevil will premiere on Netflix in 2016.
