Mini Photoblog: Nostalgic Hong Kong

Guest Post by Jane Lui

Prologue. I've been in Hong Kong for two weeks. It's currently 90 degree, pouring rain, and absolutely beautiful. The heat is definitely more stubborn than I remembered... but maybe I'm not remembering right. It's been a long time. I don't come back often and when I do, I feel a lot -- memories, changes, what ifs, the lot. So I usually ride heavily on nostalgia, visiting every haunt and old-timer cuisine I can find to negotiate with my roots.

Strangely, Hong Kong seems to be doing the same thing.

Hong Kong movie pioneer Run Run Shaw dies at 106

Prolific movie producer responsible for popularizing kung fu genre

Legendary and prolific movie producer Run Run Shaw, who co-founded the iconic Shaw Brothers film studios, helped bring Chinese martial arts films to an international audience and jumpstarted the careers of countless screen stars, died in his home in Hong Kong on Tuesday. He made it to the badass age of 106.

Shaw is nothing short of cinematic pioneer, credited with popularizing the kung fu genre. Shaw Brothers studios, founded with his elder brother Run Me in 1958, helped launch the careers of dozens of powerhouse directors and star actors, and produced nearly a thousand movies. Produced under assembly-line conditions, Shaw films weren't always the highest quality flicks, but they made an impact -- and a lot of money.

Anybody want to buy Bruce Lee's Game of Death jumpsuit?

Iconic movie memorabilia goes on the auction block

Bruce Lee's most famous movie outfit is arguably almost no outfit at all -- I'm thinking shirtless and sweaty, with three bloody scratches across the abdomen, in the finale of Enter the Dragon. But perhaps his second most famous outfit is the yellow jumpsuit worn in Game of Death. And now it can be yours for a pretty price.

Got $40,000? Buy Bruce Lee's Shrunken Yellow Jump Suit

The real thing, that is. The iconic yellow jumpsuit, one of two Lee wore in his final film Game of Death -- with matching nunchucks -- is up for auction along with other Bruce memorabilia in Hong Kong this week.

It's got a broken zipper and some shrinkage -- it's over forty years old, after all -- but the yellow one-piece, designed by Lee himself, is expected to fetch somewhere around $32,000 to $39,000.

Aziz Ansari goes to Hong Kong, gets schooled on the proper way to eat a pineapple bun

"Now I'm that brown guy who ripped the buns apart."

I'm enjoying the recently launched Esquire Network's new travelogue show The Getaway, in which interesting personalities are dropped into world cities and tear it up. Basically, it's a really nice excuse for celebrity folk to eat and drink and eat some more. Last week's episode featured comedian Aziz Ansari exploring the sights and tastes of Hong Kong. And damns, it made me hungry.

Here's a clip of Aziz hanging out with food blogger Nicole Fung at the Kam Wah Cafe, one of Hong Kong's most famous teahouse. He gets schooled in the proper way to eat a pineapple bun -- don't rip it apart, dude -- from the restaurant's watchful host, Mrs. Chan. And people, you do not want to cross Mrs. Chan:
