'Fresh Off The Boat' to end after six seasons

The hour-long series finale is set to air on February 21.



It's official: Fresh Off The Boat will end this season. After six seasons, the ABC comedy -- the longest-running sitcom about an Asian American family in broadcast television history -- is coming to close next year.

The network reportedly informed Fresh Off The Boat's cast and crew this week that it would not be ordering further episodes, and the current season's 14th and 15th episodes would mark the end of the show's run.

The single-camera comedy, executive produced by Nahnatchka Khan and Melvin Mar, stars Randall Park, Constance Wu, Hudson Yang, Forrest Wheeler, Ian Chen, Lucile Soong, Chelsea Crisp and Ray Wise.

If 'Fresh Off The Boat' had the 'Full House' theme song

Season five premieres October 5 as part of ABC's re-launched "TGIF" lineup.



The Huang family is back! Fresh Off The Boat returns for its landmark fifth season on October 5, premiering in its new Friday night time slot, holding down the re-launch of ABC's iconic "TGIF" programming block.

And it appears they're fully embracing their Friday night responsibilities, invoking one of TGIF's flagship legacy shows, Full House, for a funny bit in this week's premiere. In this scene, Louis imagines his family by way of a beloved 1990s family sitcom's opening credits -- complete with the Full House theme song.

Hey all, I'm Hudson Yang, and I play Eddie Huang on ABC's Fresh Off the Boat. You probably know Eddie is based on the real Eddie Huang, who's an amazing chef and writer -- his restaurant Bauhaus in NYC is the bomb, and he's opening one in LA soon, yeaaahhhh. Eddie's memoir about growing up as a Taiwanese American kid in Orlando, Florida turned into our show.

When they cast me as Eddie, they did it in part because in a lot of ways, we're alike. I mean, it's not just that we kind of look alike: We say what's on our minds and we do what we feel like we gotta do, and we both really love food.

I always have, since I was a little kid. My grandma on my mom's side, who lived with us, would cook all the time — it was her way to show that she loved us. I grew up on amazing Taiwanese food (and leftovers from the food, and leftovers from the leftovers….). She let me help her cook, showing me how to use a knife the right way to peel vegetables, stirring the pot. Once I got burned and my dad flipped out. But I told him it was my fault and that I'd be more careful. I kept on helping my grandma…and even when I got burned again, I pretended it didn't happen so he wouldn't know until it healed.

'Fresh Off The Boat' responds to Chris Rock's Oscar joke

In about twenty years, Evan Huang is going to be very disappointed.



No, Chris Rock. We're still quite not over that crappy Asian joke you told at this year's Academy Awards. Fresh Off The Boat apparently isn't cool with it either. On Tuesday's season finale, the ABC comedy managed to throw a little bit of shade at the comedian's infamous awards show moment.

The episode's B-story revolves around Eddie's various attempts to watch Chris Rock's brand-new HBO standup comedy special Bring the Pain. (Remember: Fresh Off The Boat is set in the 1990s.) When the Huang brothers are finally able to sneak a late-night viewing, they find Rock's comedy funny and educational, with wide-eyed Evan remarking, "I'm just glad he doesn't do lame Asian jokes."

In about twenty years, Evan is going to be very disappointed.
