Maybe you've heard: Donald Trump has a contentious relationship with the press. So it's no surprise that the orange chickenshit did not attend Saturday's annual White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington DC. However, host Hasan Minhaj was on hand to say what sorely needed to said, and he did not pull any punches.

"I would say it is an honor to be here, but that would be an alternative fact," Minhaj joked. "It is not. No one wanted to do this. So of course, it lands in the hands of an immigrant. That's how it always goes down."

The Daily Show correspondent took shots at everyone from Bill O'Reilly to Sean Spicker to CNN. And of course, Donald Trump. He also stressed the importance of free speech, the First Amendment, and the crucial role of the press in upholding the ideals of democracy. Minhaj also acknowledged that it was weird and amazing for him, a brown kid to be standing up there talking shit about the president, live on C-SPAN.

"Only in America can a first generation Indian American Muslim kid get on this stage and make fun of the president," Minhaj said. "The Orange Man behind the Muslim ban."

Andrew Ahn gave an acceptance speech for all of us

'Spa Night' wins the John Cassavetes Award at the Independent Spirit Awards.



Forget the Academy Awards. The best acceptance speech of the weekend happened at the 32nd Independent Spirit Awards, courtesy of writer/director Andrew Ahn. His acclaimed coming-of-age drama Spa Night won the John Cassavetes Award, which is presented to a film budgeted at less than $500,000.

Stepping up to the mic, Andrew nervously admitted, "I'm gonna barf," then offered some heartfelt thanks for honoring his film about a Korean American immigrant family and queer Korean American people. He also stressed the importance of telling stories by underrepresented voices.

"Now, more than ever, it's important that we support stories told by and about communities that are marginalized; that we tell stories about immigrants, Muslims, women, people of color, trans and queer folk," Andrew said. "Film is such a power tool in humanizing these communities so that we can't be pushed aside and labeled as "other." We are a part of this great country and we are undeniable."

Hasan Minhaj rips Congress to shreds over gun control

While Democrats were in the middle of a marathon filibuster on the Senate floor over gun control legislation on Wednesday, comedian Hasan Minhaj was unleashing his own impassioned call to action before a room full of congress people and pundits at the Radio and Television Correspondents Association Dinner.

After delivering the usual barrage of jokes about the likes of Donald Trump, Hillary Clinton and Fox News, the The Daily Show correspondent devoted the last few minutes of his speech to address Sunday's shooting massacre that killed 49 people at a popular gay nightclub in Orlando, ferociously calling out the complicity and inaction of the "do-nothing Congress" -- and all of us, really -- that led to this horrific moment.

Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang's 'Master of None' wins Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy Series.



On Sunday night at the 2016 Critics' Choice Awards, the acclaimed Netflix series Master of None took home the trophy for Best Comedy Series. Series star/director/co-creator Ansari, co-creator/executive producer Alan Yang and the rest of the cast were on hand to take the stage and accept the well-deserved award.

In addition to the usual thanks friends, family and industry folks, Yang specifically thanked "all of the straight white guys who dominated movies and TV so hard, for so long, that stories about anyone else seem kind of fresh and original. Because you guys crushed it for so long, anything else seems kind of different."

Over the weekend, our friend Gene Luen Yang, the celebrated, award-winning graphic novelist behind American Born Chinese, Boxers & Saints and The Shadow Hero, delivered one heck of a speech at the 14th annual National Book Festival's gala in Washington DC.

To a room full of notable literary figures, including respectable author-types and representatives from the Library of Congress, this self-professed "comic book guy" spoke about the importance of diversity and the power of comics to reach and engage readers of any background.

On Wednesday at Harvard Law School's commencement ceremony, graduates were given an inspirational address from one of our nation's top legal minds: Mindy Kaling. Okay, so not quite a lawyer. She doesn't even play one on television! But Kaling, writer/producer/star of The Mindy Project, took to the podium anyway. While she was short on wise words ("Celebrities give too much advice...") she made it up with humor and charm.

As she started her address, Kaling was faced with the disappointing truth she would not be receiving an honorary legal degree ("So apparently, there's a little miscommunication...") but she powered through. Her remarks included shout outs to everyone from Harvard Law alumni Barack Obama and Elle Woods to her own Indian immigrants parents and fellow speaker -- and fellow Desi -- U.S. attorney Preet Bharara.
