The surprising story of the salesman who became L.A.'s first known COVID-19 patient
A 38-year-old salesman named Qian Lang was the first confirmed case of COVID-19 in Los Angeles and the fourth in the United States. He played an important role, not widely known until now, in a frantic race to understand the deadly new virus before it hit the U.S. in full force. Public health officials and researchers looked to him as a real-time, flesh-and-blood case study.

I'm the one who made Tomi Lahren call Trump a 'jackass' in Hindi.
Ali-Asghar Abedi waged $85 that a prominent Trump supporter wouldn't bother researching exactly what 'ulloo' really meant. He was right. The result: a video of conservative commentator Tomi Lahren calling Trump the colloquial Indian equivalent of "jackass," courtesy of the Cameo app. And India having a laugh as her clip ended up appearing across the country’s news networks.

Sometimes You Have to Jump the Counter and Fight a Racist

And Other Things to Know From Angry Asian America.

Fight caught on camera after restaurant customer tells worker 'get back to China'
In Carmichael, California, a customer at a BurgerIM restaurant location was caught on camera starting a fight, yelling racial slurs and throwing a drink at the employee working behind the counter. But the employee, Stephen Tran, wasn't taking that shit. He leapt over the counter and started throwing punches at the guy. Video of the incident was recorded on the store's camera, but there's no audio. According to Tran, the man refused to stand outside to wait for his food, then said, "Fuck you and your chinky policy," told him to go "back to China" and other racial slurs, before throwing his cup. I'm not condoning violence... but sometimes you have to jump over a counter to make a damn point.

This Squad Has Made 60,000 Masks for Vulnerable People

And Other Things to Know From Angry Asian America.

A comedian’s tour was canceled. So she started the Auntie Sewing Squad.
Los Angeles comedian Kristina Wong was planning to take her new one-woman show on tour in the spring when it was suddenly canceled because of the swiftly spreading novel coronavirus. Wanting to put her time to good use, she reached out to the homeless population in her community and donated tents and air mattresses, and also paid to have two washing stations installed so people could keep their hands clean. Then a friend showed her a news story in March about Los Angeles-area hospitals pleading for face masks. Wong knew it was time to pull out her Hello Kitty sewing machine and leftover fabric scraps.

Trump administration rescinds foreign students rule
The Trump administration on Tuesday rescinded a policy that would have stripped visas from international students whose courses move exclusively online amid the coronavirus pandemic. Michael Lofthouse Resigns as CEO of Solid8 After Racist Video
Michael Lofthouse, that asshole who was caught on camera harassing an Asian American family with racist remarks at a restaurant, is reportedly resigning from his position as the head of the tech startup Solid8, according to a statement to Fox Business. I find this this rather funny, considering that internet research has turned up the fact that Solid8 is basically a company of one employee, run out of this guy's house. Who the hell got into their head that this dude was the "CEO" of anything? What's also hilarious is Lofthouse claiming that in addition to resigning, he has "enrolled in an anti-racist program with immediate effect." Cardi B Used a Racial Slur To Describe Her Daughter's Eyes
Over the weekend on social media, Cardi B posted a photo of her daughter and commented that she had "chinky eyes." Let's just let that sit for a moment. She said it so casually, you have to assume... she had no idea how offensive it was? Fans jumped in to educate the rapper and explained that the term is considered to be a racial slur. "You guys can't be in this country."
Meanwhile, in Marin County, an Asian American family was out enjoying a hike in the woods when they encountered a woman who stopped them and told them they "can't be in this country" after scolding them for having a dog on the trail. (There were apparently several other hikers with dogs on the trail. I highly doubt she confronted all those folks.) She told them they were breaking the law and -- classic move, true to form! -- pulled out her phone to call the police, aka The Manager. Then she scurried away when she realized she was being filmed. Woman who went on anti-Asian tirades arrested on separate battery charge
Remember that racist lady in Torrance? You know who I'm talking about. The woman whose racist anti-Asian tirades went viral last month has a warrant out for her arrest -- but not for those incidents. She's wanted in connection with a separate confrontation from last year. 54-year-old Lena Hernandez was charged Thursday in an alleged case of battery stemming from an incident at a local mall on October 14, 2019, in which she verbally assaulted a custodian and struck another person who tried to intervene. According to the city attorney, there is "insufficient evidence" to support filing criminal charges regarding the incidents at the park. Folks calling for her head will have to settle for the battery charge, and hope you don't run into Lena on the street.

Trump Refers to Coronavirus as 'Kung Flu.' Again.

And Other Things to Know From Angry Asian America.

Trump again uses racially insensitive term to describe coronavirus
No doubt because it went over so well last time, Donald Trump again referred to the novel coronavirus as "kung flu," eliciting laughter and wild cheers from a young crowd in Arizona on Tuesday. Because fuck you. Trump was listing the different names he has heard for the virus -- which, by the way has killed at least 119,000 Americans -- during a speech for the student Republican group Turning Point Action. This is racist. He knows it's racist. He simply does not give a shit.

Trump Suspends Visas Allowing Foreigners to Work in the U.S.
On Monday, Trump temporarily suspended new work visas and barred hundreds of thousands of foreigners from seeking employment in the United States, part of a broad effort to limit the entry of immigrants into the country. In a sweeping order, which will be in place at least until the end of the year, Mr. Trump blocked visas for a wide variety of jobs, including those for computer programmers and other skilled workers who enter the country under the H-1B visa, as well as those for seasonal workers in the hospitality industry, students on work-study summer programs and au pairs who arrive under other auspices. Nobody should be surprised by any of this; he's doing exactly what he's been promising forever: ridding the country of immigrants, one by one.

From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry
Wow. Author Paula Yoo just unveiled the cover of her upcoming book for young readers, From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry: The Killing of Vincent Chin and the Trial that Galvanized the Asian American Movement The book is a groundbreaking portrait of Vincent Chin and the murder case that took America's Asian American community to the streets in protest of injustice. From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry is a searing examination of the killing and the trial and verdicts that followed. When killers Ronald Ebens and Michael Nitz pled guilty to manslaughter and received only a $3,000 fine and three years' probation, the lenient sentence sparked outrage in the Asian American community. This outrage galvanized the Asian American movement and paved the way for a new federal civil rights trial of the case. Extensively researched from court transcripts and interviews with key case witnesses -- many speaking for the first time -- Yoo has crafted a suspenseful, nuanced, and authoritative portrait of a pivotal moment in civil rights history, and a man who became a symbol against hatred and racism. From a Whisper to a Rallying Cry will hit shelves on April 6, 2021.

Trump Calls the Coronavirus 'Kung Flu'

And Other Things to Know From Angry Asian America.

Trump Calls the Coronavirus 'Kung Flu'
Donald Trump remains shamelessly steadfast in his quest to blame China for this country's troubles. Over the weekend at a campaign rally in Tulsa, Oklahoma, he used racist language to describe the coronavirus pandemic by terming the virus as the "kung flu." Because fuck you, right? And the crowd ate it up. Racist, garbage human beings go together. Trump has repeatedly referred to Covid-19 as the "Chinese virus" or the "Wuhan virus," but this was a new one (though apparently not new within the walls of the White House.) As history -- hell, the very immediate present -- has shown, this aggressive scapegoating is dangerous news for Asian American, only throwing gas on the current shitfire state of the nation. Like Trump gives a shit.

K-Pop Stans Successfully Sabotaged Trump's Tulsa Rally
Speaking of Trump's sad, so sad rally, you can thank K-pop fans (along with TikTok users) for apparently sabotaging the gathering at the BOK Center in Tulsa. The campaign originally projected that the rally would fill the 19,000-seat stadium, with Trump scheduled to make an address to the overflow crowd outside. Instead, the outdoor address was canceled, and the stadium was more than half empty. Political commentators deduced that K-pop fans as well as TikTok users had mobilized to reserve tickets to the rally -- with no intention of show up -- skewing the Trump campaign's projections and securing the empty seats. As I've said before, and will probably say many times again: don't fuck with K-pop fans.
