They Call Us Bruce 228: They Call Us Lunar New Year Love Story

Jeff Yang and Phil Yu present an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America.

What's up, podcast listeners? We've got another episode of our podcast They Call Us Bruce. (Almost) each week, my good friend, writer/columnist Jeff Yang and I host an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America, with a strong focus on media, entertainment and popular culture.

In this episode, we welcome graphic novel superstars Gene Luen Yang and LeUyen Pham, who have joined forces for Lunar New Year Love Story, a heartwarming rom-com about fate, family, and falling in love. They talk about Gene's real-life origins of merging Valentine's Day and Lunar New Year celebrations, the bad dates and relationships that inspired some of their characters' turmoil, and the natural pan-Asian diversity that infuses the cast and community narrative of Lunar New Love Story.

Say what's on your heart with #MuslimVDay cards.

For love in the time of a racialized, islamophobia-ridden America.

Hallmark can suck it. For the fourth year running, my good friend writer/artist Taz Ahmed is back with another set of her awesome #MuslimVDay Cards, snarky sentiments for Valentine's Day conveying "the exact emotions you feel of love in the time of a racialized, islamophobia-ridden America."

Taz started the #MuslimVDay cards in 2011 as a personal counterculture art project, intended as a lighthearted answer to Islamophobia and the confining stereotypes that trail her as a Muslim woman in the post-9/11 era. They were an instant hit, taking the internet "like drones dropping bombs" -- her words, not mine.

The 2015 series includes six cards printed on 4.25 x 5.5 postcard size cardstock. Each card is full-colored, and is numbered, signed and dated, with a limited print of 100 cards per image. Order your set at Etsy.

Send that special someone a #MuslimVDay card

"This burka is built for two."

We all have our different ways of acknowledging Valentine's Day. Some go all out, do the fancy dinner and flowers and chocolate. Good luck with that. Some ignore the day entirely. My good friend writers/artist/activist Tanzila "Taz" Ahmed made some awesome, weirdly warped Muslim Valentine's Day cards.

Originally conceived as a Twitter hashtag three years ago, she created them as a fun, cheeky response to some of the perceptions placed on her as a single Muslim woman. They were an instant hit. This year, she printed up some cards and made them available for purchase from Etsy.
