wayne wang returns to his roots... again

The New York Times has a good article on veteran director Wayne Wang and his 25-year career since 1982's Chan Is Missing, deftly straddling the line between indie cinema and Hollywood studio movies: Bridging Generations and Hemispheres.

The guy has definitely never been content with being boxed in by the industry, from groundbreaking Asian American films like Chan, Dim Sum and Joy Luck Club, to edgy indies like Smoke and The Center of the World, and standard studio fare like Maid in Manhattan and Last Holiday.

This month, Wang goes back to basics with the release of two of his most intimate films, A Thousand Years of Good Prayers and The Princess of Nebraska, both based on Yiyun Li by Chinese-born author Yiyun Li. A Thousand Years opens in select theaters this Friday from Magnolia Pictures. The Princess of Nebraska will be distributed free on the web starting October 17.
