100 times a white actor played someone who wasn't white: Hollywood has moved on from blackface, but it remains terrible at casting people of color. Despite decades of protests over racially inappropriate casting and the recent complaints over the lack of diversity among the Oscar nominees, filmmakers continue to cast white actors as minority characters.

If you are in Seattle and want to see some theatre, check out my old pal Maggie Lee in the "surreal comedic detective story" Do It For Umma, written by Seayoung Yim and directed by Sara Porkalob.

It's running February 2-17 at the Annex Theatre. Here are some more details about the show:

The original cast recording of the Broadway musical Allegiance, starring George Takei, Lea Salonga and Telly Leung, with lyrics and music by Jay Kuo, is now available digitally and in stores.

Allegiance (Original Broadway Cast Recording)

Inspired by true events, Allegiance is the story of the Kimura family, whose lives are upended when they and 120,000 other Japanese Americans are forced to leave their homes following the events of Pearl Harbor. Sam Kimura seeks to prove his patriotism by fighting for his country in the war, but his sister, Kei, fiercely protests the government's treatment of her people.

Allegiance is the story of one family's resilience in the face seemingly insurmountable odds, following the Kimuras as they fight between duty and defiance, custom and change, family bonds and forbidden loves.

Here's a preview of the album:

Duong, 43, turned himself in to Santa Ana police after a friend or acquaintance called police. Duong reportedly walked into a business called Auto Electric Builders and told an acquaintance, who worked there, that he wanted to turn himself in. She contacted police, and the place soon was soon surrounded by cops.

Duong is one of three inmates who broke out of the maximum security Orange County Men's Jail last Friday. The three inmates reportedly cut through steel bars, forced their way into a plumbing tunnel and used a "makeshift rope" to rappel down the multistory facility from the roof.

37-year-old Hossein Nayeri and 20-year-old Jonathan Tieu remain at large.

Tan is apparently longtime supporter of the American Museum of Natural History. She has accompanied Mark Sidall, the museum's curator of invertebrate zoology, into the field in the past. Her 2005 novel Saving Fish from Drowning includes a number of references to jungle leeches.

As a tribute to Tan's support, the museum has named a leech for her.

Dad comes to visit and co-workers hook up(!) on 'Dr. Ken'

Episode 114: "D.K. and the Dishwasher" airs Friday, January 29 at 8:30pm on ABC

On this week's Dr. Ken, Ken's dad crashes for an impromptu stay, and two very unlikely co-workers hook up!

Inspired by executive producer/star Ken Jeong's real life and career as a medical doctor, the multi-camera comedy Dr. Ken follows Dr. Ken Park, a physician with bad bedside manner trying to juggle medicine and being a family man to his wife and kids -- and not quite succeeding on either front.

Dr. Ken also stars the awesome Suzy Nakamura as Ken's wife Allison, Krista Marie Yu as daughter Molly, and Albert Tsai as his son Dave. They're all great. The cast is rounded out by Tisha Campbell-Martin as Damona, Jonathan Slavin as Clark, Kate Simses as Julie and Dave Foley as Pat.

But he's one of only a dozen students who aced the whole damn test.

Every. Single. Question. Cedrick found out last summer that he had scored a 5, the top score possible on the exam. But last week, his principal received a letter from the College Board informing him that Cedrick had gotten every single question correct, calling it a "remarkable achievement."

Nathan Chen jumps his way into history at national championships

Despite the unprecedented four quadruples, Chen finished third with a score of 266.93. Veteran Adam Rippon, who is considered a more lyrical skater, won his first national title without landing any quads, earning a total score of 270.75, while runner-up Max Aaron had two quadruples jumps and a total score of 269.55.

Help make Big Phony's next album

Singer/songwriter Bobby Choy is raising funds for his sixth full-length album.

My friend Bobby Choy, who makes amazing music as singer/songwriter Big Phony, is putting the call out for help to raise funds through Kickstarter to record his next full-length album.

These days, Bobby's been kicking it in Korea and has written more than 70 songs since his last release. While nearly all of Bobby's stuff has had that lo-fi recorded-in-his-bedroom ultra-indie hustle quality, he's still released some fantastic tunes. (If you haven't heard his 2014 albums Bobby or Long Live the Lie, you gotta.)

But for his sixth album, Big Phony is aiming to get into a legit studio and record on real hi-fi gear. With the guidance of fellow singer/songwriter Goh Nakamura, he's come up with a reasonable plan and a modest budget to make it happen -- with our assistance, of course.

Bobby explains more in this video:

British actor Benedict Wong will appear alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in Marvel's Doctor Strange as Wong, the Sorcerer Supreme's faithful and trusty sidekick. Because every good superhero needs a manservant.

Among his functions is to look after Strange's body when the hero is astral projecting himself into other dimensional planes. While he doesn't possess any magical or superhuman powers, he is a master martial artist (of course).

So yeah, an Asian sidekick to the white hero. (Sigh.)

Oklahoma City Cop Daniel Holtzclaw Sentenced to 263 Years for Rapes

Holtzclaw was accused of committing sex crimes against thirteen Black women. He was convicted in December on 18 of 36 counts of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy, procuring lewd exhibition, indecent exposure, burglary and stalking.

Prosecutors argued that Holtzclaw, who is white and Japanese, specifically used his position and power as a law enforcement officer to target Black women in a low-income neighborhood and intimated them into keeping his crimes a secret. He was convicted of offenses involving eight of the women.

Casting Call: Seeking Asian actors for 'Ready Player One'

Directed by Steven Spielberg, based on the book by Ernest Cline.

Got this casting call passed along to me for the upcoming Warner Bros. film Ready Player One. Directed by Steven Spielberg and based on the book by Ernest Cline, the thriller is about a kid on a high-stakes treasure hunt competition through a virtual reality world created in a society that obsesses about 1980s pop culture.

They're seeking actors for the movie's teenage hero Wade Watts, as well as a couple of supporting roles that specifically call for performers of Asian descent, including Shoto, a 10 to 13-year-old Chinese male who speaks fluent Mandarin and English fluently and is described as "hip and knowing for his age"; and Daito, a 20-year-old Japanese male who speaks Japanese and English fluently.

Here's the breakdown:

If The Walking Dead was a Netflix true crime series...

The Walking Dead Twitter trolls fans with a parody image of Making a Murderer.

This will only be amusing to fans of both The Walking Dead and Making a Murderer.

The Walking Dead official Twitter account -- for the comic book, not the TV show -- tweeted out this parody image mashing up Steven Yeun from the hit AMC zombie drama with the key art for Netflix's hotly buzzed true-crime docu-series about the Teresa Halbach murder case and the trial of Steven Avery.

The image, tweeted with the caption "If Season 6 of The Walking dead were on Netflix..." is an allusion to the apparent death of Yeun's character Glenn at the hands of the undead, the ensuing frustrating month-long fan speculation over whether or not he actually died, and eventual reveal that he had survived.

Of course, Kelvin was -- let's be real, predictably -- mislabeled as "writer Alan Yang." Because, you know, Asians.

As the real Alan Yang remarked on Twitter, "Same race, different dude."

This Hello Kitty x Mazinger Z mashup will save the world

Two classic Japanese pop culture icons collide for an awesome action figure collaboration.

This is what happens two classic Japanese pop culture icons collide. Bandai Tamashii Nations has created two incredible action figure collaborations combining, believe it or not, Hello Kitty and Mazinger Z.

Standing approximately four-inches tall, the Hello Kitty Mazinger Z Color Chogokin Die-Cast Metal Action Figure is Hello Kitty rocking a retro Mazinger Z metallic look with a mini pilot Hello Kitty finished in Koji Kabuto colors. The set includes a special display case and underwater-mode parts.

The Mazinger Z Chogokin Hello Kitty Color Version Die-Cast Metal Action Figure features Hello Kitty's iconic red ribbon where Mazinger Z's trademark chest piece usually rests. And the iconic giant robot's Jet Scrander belt has been reformed as Hello Kitty's face. How did this colossal collaboration happen? This video gives us the origin story:

Latest music video from Kero Uno's producer album 'Reflection Eternal'

According to Kero, this is his most meaningful music video to date, as he took on the role of writing, directing and starring in the video alongside Heidi Kuan. It's an instrumental track, but he had a vision for it, and he wanted to see it through.

"I know this isn't the most commercial-sounding song on the album that one might think deserves all the time, money and energy," Kero says. "But I just wanted to execute a vision I had when producing this song."

Because there should be a dumpling emoji

Emoji by the people, for the people.

Dumplings are a seemingly universal food, taking various forms throughout the world's cultures. Poland has pierogi. Nepal has momos. Russia has pelmeni. Japan has gyoza. Italy has ravioli. Georgia has khinkali. Korea has mandoo. Argentina has empanadas. Jews have kreplach. China has potstickers. The U.S. has Hot Pockets.

There is a pizza emoji, a hamburder emoji and a taco emoji. There is also a range of emojis of Japanese foods including sushi, fish cake, rice ball and dango. But there is no dumpling emoji.

There should be a dumpling emoji.

But how do we make that happen? The Dumpling Emoji Project has done the research, and is taking the steps to not only bring the dumpling emoji to life but also pave the way for a more inclusive catalog of emojis.

Aziz Ansari and Alan Yang's 'Master of None' wins Critics' Choice Award for Best Comedy Series.

In addition to the usual thanks friends, family and industry folks, Yang specifically thanked "all of the straight white guys who dominated movies and TV so hard, for so long, that stories about anyone else seem kind of fresh and original. Because you guys crushed it for so long, anything else seems kind of different."

All of the Asians in Star Wars: Tasu Leech Action Figure

As seen in 'The Force Awakens,' the leader of the Kanjiklub gang get his own figure.

Yes! One of items on my Star Wars action figure wish list will soon be miiiiiiiine!

Some new images of soon-to-be-released Hasbro 3-3/4" Star Wars: The Force Awakens action figures have hit the web, and one of them is Tasu Leech, leader of the notorious Kanjiklub gang. Played by Indonesian actor Yayan Ruhian, he shows up in The Force Awakens to collect from that swindling scoundrel Han Solo. Honestly, he and that Raid crew were waaaaaay underused in the movie, but it was still cool to see him in the mix.

And now he's immortalized as an action figure:

Judge tosses civil rights case against Alabama cop who paralyzed Indian grandfather

Eric Parker still faces a state charge of misdemeanor assault and a civil lawsuit.

Maaaan, this is some bullshit. In Alabama, a judge threw out the case against the police officer who was accused of using excessive force on a 57-year-old Indian man, partially paralyzing him.

Judge throws out case against police officer charged in takedown of Indian grandfather

On Wednesday, Judge Madeline Hughes Haikala threw out the case against Madison police office Eric Parker, who faced up to ten years in prison for excessive force after he was caught on camera throwing Sureshbhai Patel to the ground last year during a sidewalk stop.

The doctor becomes the patient on 'Dr. Ken'

Episode 111: "Ken's Physical" airs Friday, January 15 at 8:30pm on ABC

On this week's Dr. Ken, the tables are turned when Ken has to get a physical.

Here's some more info about this week's episode, "Ken's Physical":

There is a food truck actually called "White Girl Asian Food"

Serving up "deliciousness from all over Asia."

People. Is this a real thing? This can't be real.

White Girl Asian Food appears to be an actual food trailer operating in Austin, Texas. True to its branding and concept, the proprietor is a white girl serving "Asian food." Also known as "Com Bun Yeu" ("Rice Noodle Love" in Vietnamese), they claim to "serve up deliciousness from all over Asia."

You guys, I can't do this today. The oblivious tone-deaf white privilege here is astounding.

Bruce Lee, lightsaber nunchucks and a galaxy far, far away...

Artist imagines the legendary martial artist as a Jedi warrior.

This incredible Star Wars-themed Bruce Lee art (or is it Bruce Lee-themed Star Wars art by Deviant Art artist Ameen Naksewee) imagines the legendary martial artist as a lightsaber nunchuck-wielding Jedi in a galaxy far, far away. LIGHTSABER NUNCHUCKS. To be honest, it sounds like an extremely impractical and hilariously dangerous weapon to wield. But if anyone could do it, it's Bruce:

Sheriff's deputy arrested for DUI after brandishing gun

Benjamin Lee pointed a gun at Jack-in-the-Box employees because the drive-thru line was too slow.

Asians behaving badly... firearem-brandishing drunken cop edition. In the Bay Area, a sheriff's deputy was arrested for allegedly brandishing a gun while drunkenly ordering food at a fast food drive-through window.

This Buddhist monk isn't getting his wallet stolen that easily

61-year-old victim fights robber who snatched his wallet.

In Philadelphia, a man was caught on surveillance video robbing of Buddhist monk of his wallet while he was at a gas station. The monk, not ready to lose his money like that, is seen chasing and grabbing at the assailant.

Buddhist monk fights robber

Unfortunately, the robber got away. The 61-year-old victim, dressed in the orange robe of a Buddhist monk, was at a lottery machine -- I guess monks gotta play Powerball too -- inside of a Sunoco gas station in South Philadelphia, when the robber came up to him and snatched his wallet out of his hand.

But the monk wasn't ready to part with his money that easily. He chased after the robber and struggled with him outside the store, but the suspect pushed him to the ground before getting in his car and driving away.

The incident was caught on the gas station's security cameras:
