all-immigrant high school ranks 6th in the nation

Thought this was pretty interesting... An all-immigrant high school in Queens, which only accepts students who have arrived in the county in the past year, has managed to crack the top 10 of the U.S. News & World Report's list of the nation's best 100 high schools: All-Immigrant Queens High School Places 6th On Nation's Top HS List.

Newcomers High School, which enrolls close to 1,000 students who speak 30 different languages and offers eight Advanced Placement courses, placed 6th on the coveted list. The school's diverse arts and music program is funded though a federal grant.

Students say the school's environment has helped them through the transition of moving to the United States, while teaching them about the customs of other countries. The No. 1 spot on the list went to Thomas Jefferson High School in Virginia. Schools were ranked on the basis of state test scores and the success of poor and minority students, as well as student performance on Advanced Placement tests. For the complete list of top 100 U.S. High schools, go here.
