fruit fly opening at the castro theater in san francisco

This is for all my Bay Area friends... the indie musical Fruit Fly, from H.P. Mendoza (writer/composer/star of Colma: The Musical) is getting a limited theatrical run from TLA Releasing, starting this Wednesday, August 11 and Thursday, August 12 at the Castro Theater in San Francisco. Here's the plot synopsis:
Bethesda, a Filipina-American performance artist, moves into San Francisco's Castro district in search of her birth mother. While living in a communal artists' loft, she ends up going to local gay bars with her roommates, all while pulling together clues to her mother's identity. Convinced that a successful autobiographical show in the lively San Francisco art scene will catapult her to success, Bethesda grapples with the realities of gay life and the theater world.
And here's the trailer:

I haven't been able to catch this film yet, but it was produced by my friends at the Center for Asian American Media, and get a big kick out of seeing a lot of familiar faces in the trailer. Here's some more info about this week's Castro Theater screenings:

FRUIT FLY (2:30), 4:45, 7:00, 9:00

From H.P. Mendoza, writer, composer and star of Colma: The Musical comes this infectious and charming San Francisco songfest. L.A. Renigen plays a Filipina performance artist who arrives in the city and moves into a Mission District artists’ commune. There, she is welcomed into a world of colorful characters, rent control, public transit, one-night stands and other heartbreakingly familiar San Francisco mainstays, all celebrated in a lyrical chorus of clever wit, whimsical choreography and catchy hooks. 2010 | 94 min

The 7:00 shows on both days are going to have a Q&A with the cast and crew and the limited edition soundtrack CD will be sold in the lobby.
For those of you in New York, the film opens next month, September 24, at the Quad Cinema. It will also be released on DVD in October. For more information about the film, including a vast collection of all the great reviews it's received, go to the Fruit Fly website here.
