Angry Reader of the Week: Shaun Lau

"Expressing equal parts love and righteous fire."

Hello, internet friends. It is time, once again, to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Shaun Lau.

Who are you?

My name is Shaun Lau. I'm the host of a film and social issues podcast called No, Totally! and, for better or for worse, I think I'm primarily known for my tweets at @NoTotally.

What are you?

According to the Chinese Zodiac, I'm a Metal Monkey, which feels accurate.

Where are you?

I'm in historic Koreatown near downtown Los Angeles!

Where are you from?

I was born and raised in Hawaii, the SPAM capital of the world.

What do you do?

Everything in my power to encourage conversations about what I think are vital issues being ignored by the (white) world at large. I've been podcasting for about three and a half years now and have some experience in radio, so I use that knowledge to help marginalized people launch podcasts. I believe in hearing and broadcasting the actual voices of those who are largely invisible to mainstream society. I also believe in very long Twitter threads.

What are you all about?

Inter-community solidarity, with care in recognizing, because of intersectionalism, that communities are never actually as separate as we often tend to think. Working, constantly, to meet and understand anyone who doesn't wish me harm simply because of who I am. Expressing equal parts love and righteous fire.

What makes you angry?

The undercurrent to every single part of culture that straight, white, abled men are inherently capable of more than others. The obliviousness and cowardice of white liberalism when it comes to affecting actual positive change for historically marginalized groups. Being underestimated.
