Angry Reader of the Week: Bo Yeon Kim

"Taking pride in needing more than fifteen seconds to explain what I am or where I'm from."

Greetings, good people of the world wide web. It's time to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Bo Yeon Kim.

Who are you?

Friends call me Boey (pronounced like David Bowie). Strangers call me Bo. Rest of the time, I'm Bo Yeon Kim.

What are you?

An international nomad. Third culture kid. Forever meandering between "Korean Korean" and "Korean American."

Where are you?

At the moment, I'm anchored in Los Angeles, CA. But also the world wide web.

Where are you from?

I'm a strange amalgamation of the countries I grew up in, which include Korea, Japan, Portugal, Brazil and Vietnam.

What do you do?

I write for television and film. Currently, I get to build story sandcastles in a galactic sandbox called Star Trek: Discovery. When I'm not writing, I try to draw as much as I can. I play video games, or watch other people play video games on Twitch. I listen to a lot of NPR. I swear I go outside sometimes.

What are you all about?

I grew up trying to fit my foreign name on foreign forms. Always believing that the lines around me could not be crossed. Now, I'm all about crossing those lines, or living between them. Taking pride in needing more than fifteen seconds to explain what I am or where I'm from. As a genre writer, I strive to create worlds where my viewers/readers are encouraged to identify and cross the very lines that reality traps us behind.

What makes you angry?

Feeling powerless.
