Badass mother shields kids, survives shooting rampage

Tiffany Phommathep was shot five times, then drove herself to get help.

By now, you've heard about the California man who went on a violent shooting rampage Tuesday, killing five and wounding twelve others in Tehama County, before he was killed in a shootout with police.

Kevin Janson Neal killed his wife and hid her body in a hole he cut in the floor of his trailer house. He then murdered four other people during a 25-minute tear through the rural community that ended with a shooting at Rancho Tehama Elementary School. An additional six adults and six children were wounded.

But did you hear about the woman who was shot five times, using her body to shield her kids -- and lived?

Tiffany Phommathep was driving her three kids to school when Neal pulled up to her truck and started firing. She was hit four times in the back of her shoulder and once in her torso. Her 10-year-old son was shot twice in the calf, her 6-year-old son was shot in the foot, and her 2-year-old son was cut by glass.

After being shot, Phommathep, who has a concealed carry permit, reached into her glove box to grab her handgun, but Neal had driven away. Bleeding profusely, she drove to a gas station where she and her sons screamed for help. But nobody helped. So she drove several more miles until she flagged down a cop car.

Phommathep was critically wounded in the shooting and had to undergo a four-hour surgery. One of the bullets nearly missed her heart, while the shot through the abdomen cut through three parts of her intestine. But she and her sons are reportedly recovering well.

Okay, first of all, that is one badass mom. She shields her kids from gunfire, gets shot five times, and -- while bleeding like crazy -- drives herself to get help. This mom was not going down without a fight.

Second: who the hell were these awful, useless people at the gas station who saw Tiffany and the boys bleeding, screaming for help, but just stared and didn't do a damn thing? Great work. Thanks for nothing.

For those who would actually like to help Tiffany and her family, they've set up a GoFundMe account to cover medical expenses, physical therapy and household needs while she recovers. Donate here.
