Not Your Typical Makeup Tutorial

Spoken word video by Theanne Liu: for those who refuse to be silenced.

This video starts off like one of the ubiquitous makeup tutorials that populate YouTube... but then it becomes something different. Theanne Liu created this thoughtful spoken word piece to share about her personal experiences within Asian America -- "through learning about our history, understanding how we are racialized subjects, being in the diaspora, to dealing with various forms of racism and ethnosexualization."

Created for her Asian American Studies class on Race, Gender, and Sexuality at Northwestern University, the video is produced in the style of a makeup tutorial as a nod to the hypervisibility of Asian women on YouTube in the realm of beauty and fashion, while remaining underrepresented in other non-beauty-related video content.

Does Sephora have an Asian problem?

Customers with Asian names and/or Asian-origin email addresses say their accounts were blocked.

Thanks to the makeup savvy readers who sent this my way... This week, cosmetics megachain Sephora held a big sale for the top-tier customers of its loyalty program. Unfortunately, many reported that they were locked out of their accounts due to technical difficulties. But some Asian customers claim they were blocked from making purchases. Because they are Asian. Wait, what?

Big Sephora Sale Marred by Tech Issues, Accusations of Racism

The sale was only open to Sephora's "VIB" and "VIB Rouge" customers, who received 20% off and access to certain exclusive items. But according to this Reddit thread, the majority of people who reported getting blocked from making purchases were people with Asian names and/or Asian-origin email addresses.

Instant yellowface! Now available in a convenient tube.

Happy Halloween.

Before I say anything else, let me note that this post was inspired by the image accompanying Matthew Sallesses' excellent piece for The Good Men Project: Halloween Is for White People. I saw the photo on that post, said whaaaaaaaaaat, and immediately scoured the web to find that image.

This is Yellow Make-Up Cream, manufactured by Widmann srl. Yellowface in a tube! Pretty awesome right?

No, I shouldn't be surprised that this product exists. There are all sorts of bullshit racist, culturally insensitive costumes out there -- hell, why not make it easier for people to go full yellowface. Literally.

I suppose there are plenty of ways to apply yellow makeup. But the illustration on the packaging makes it pretty clear what "look" you should be going for. Need some more inspiration? Check it out:
