History repeats itself. After running out of room at government shelters, the Trump Administration has opted to use an Army base in Oklahoma to hold growing numbers of immigrant children in its custody -- at the same site where innocent Japanese American citizens were detained during World War II.

Fort Sill, an 150-year-old installation once used as an incarceration camp for Japanese Americans during World War II, has been selected "as a temporary emergency influx shelter" to detain 1,400 children until they can be given to an adult relative, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

In Oklahoma, the owners of a bed-and-breakfast are under federal investigation for allegedly keeping a Cambodian woman as an indentured servant after paying for her passing to the United States.

Last week, FBI agents raided the Whispering Pines Inn in Norman after claims surfaced that they were keeping an employee as an indentured servant. Investigators say the owners, Rany and Thavory Kchao, payed $8,000 for the woman to come to the United States from Cambodia, and in return she would work off her debt.

The woman reportedly worked as a housekeeper at the Whispering Pines Inn for the past two years, working 14 to 15 hour days, seven days a week, and never received a paycheck. The Kchaos did not let her have access to her immigration documents and did not allow her to leave the grounds of the inn on her own.

Don't be telling me local politics are boring. Last week in Oklahoma, things got heated during a mayoral candidate debate in Tulsa when an uninvited candidate crashed the proceedings on live television.

On Wednesday night, perennial Tulsa mayoral candidate Paul Tay interrupted a live public television broadcast debate between incumbent Dewey Bartlett and challenger G.T. Bynum at Rogers State University. As closing statements were about to begin, Tay stepped in front of TV cameras, introduced himself as also a candidate and said that "other voices" were being silenced. He was then asked to step off the stage.

"I will not step off. I WILL NOT STEP OFF!" he said. "You have blocked me one too many times. You have blocked me. You have blocked other candidates one too many times. I'm tired of it."

The outburst quickly devolved into an unintentional comedy sketch featuring an Asian man in a cowboy hat, the mayor calling 911 on his cell phone and, um, Matt Damon, sort of, entering the fray.

How Oklahoma cops took $53,000 from a Burmese Christian rock band

Muskogee County Sheriff's Office seized $53,234 intended for an orphanage and a religious college.



In Oklahoma, authorities announced that they would be returning over $53,000 in seized assets that it took from Eh Wah, a man who was pulled over in February while carrying the cash for a Burmese Christian rock band that had been raising funds for an orphanage in Thailand. They've also dropped a felony criminal charge against Eh Wah, who had been falsely accused of "acquiring proceeds from drug activity."

Not-so-coincidentally, the announcement came shortly after The Washington Post published a report about Eh Wah's plight. On February 27, a sheriff's deputy seized $53,234 in cash from Eh Wah, the volunteer tour manager for Klo & Kweh Music Team, a Burmese Christian music group on a tour of the United States.

Eh Wah had been driving with a broken tail light, and the deputy who pulled him over suspected that he was carrying drug money, despite having found no drugs or paraphernalia in his car. The cash was from concert ticket and merchandise sales and donations, much of it earmarked for an orphanage in Thailand, and some for a religious college back in Burma. Absolutely none of the money was derived from drug sales.

Again: no drugs, paraphernalia or weapons in the car. Eh Wah tried to explain where the cash came from -- it was difficult because English isn't his first language -- but officers weren't satisfied. He was taken to the police station for more questioning, and after six hours, eventually let go without any charges.

But the officers kept the money.

On Thursday, a judge sentenced former Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw to 263 years in prison, the full amount recommended by a jury, for the rape and sexual assault of eight women and girls.

Holtzclaw was accused of committing sex crimes against thirteen Black women. He was convicted in December on 18 of 36 counts of first-degree rape, second-degree rape, sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy, procuring lewd exhibition, indecent exposure, burglary and stalking.

Prosecutors argued that Holtzclaw, who is white and Japanese, specifically used his position and power as a law enforcement officer to target Black women in a low-income neighborhood and intimated them into keeping his crimes a secret. He was convicted of offenses involving eight of the women.

On Thursday, a jury convicted Holtzclaw of 18 of 36 charges of rape and sexual assault. Holtzclaw was accused of assaulting 13 women, all black, between late 2013 and June 18, 2014. But according to legal documents, the sex crimes unit began investigating Holtzclaw well over a month before his final assault.

The timing would mean that Holtzclaw attacked half of the women he has been convicted of assaulting while he was under investigation for sexual assault.

6-year-old Jenny Yang, a kindergartner at Oologah-Talala Lower Elementary School, was sent home last Monday with fever. When she was found unresponsive after falling asleep, she was rushed to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead. Her family is still waiting on autopsy results for an official cause of death.

While the state health department has since determined there is no public health risk, confusion over the cause of Yang's death led the school district to cancel class last week.

On May 20, an EF5 tornado tore through Moore, Oklahoma, destroying thousands of homes and killing 24 people. The twister's destructive path included Plaza Towers Elementary School, where survivor 31-year-old teacher Jennifer Doan was buried under rubble while trying to shield her students when the tornado hit.

Seven students were killed. Doan was eight weeks pregnant when the tornado struck. On December 21, she gave birth to a healthy boy. She and her husband named him Jack, because they liked how it sounded. However, Jack's middle name carries a deeper meaning: Nicolas, one of the students who was killed in that school hallway:

Two charged in Hmong celebration shooting

Five wounded at traditional Hmong New Year's festival event in Tulsa

Over the weekend in Tulsa, Oklahoma, two men were arrested in connection with a shooting that left five people wounded at a traditional Hmong New Year's festival event: Boonmlee Lee and Meng Lee arrested in Tulsa mass shooting that left five wounded at Hmong celebration.

The shooting occurred at a private party in the Tulsa Event Center, while attendees were lineup for dinner. According to police, two victims were shot in the torso and the other three had wounds to their arms and legs. The shooting was apparently part of some kind of personal vendetta.

21-year-old Boonmlee Lee and 19-year-old Meng Lee, who are apparently counsins, were each charged with five counts of shooting with intent to kill, in addition to firearms charges. Police reportedly tracked the suspects in their car, where one of the men was stripped down to his underwear in an attempt to change his clothes.
