CAAMFest Presents White Rabbit

Starring and co-written by Vivian Bang. Friday, May 11 at AMC Kabuki 8.



San Francisco film fans, this one's for you... Fresh from its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the wonderfully weird and delightful indie comedy White Rabbit is screening at CAAMFest. Co-written and starring Vivian Bang, and directed by Daryl Wein, the film follows Sophia, a Korean American performance artist trying find her voice amidst heartbreak and professional road bumps in modern Los Angeles.

CAAMFest Presents Disoriented Comedy

San Franciscooooooo. Are you ready for some laughs? The funny folks of Disoriented Comedy -- "the first-ever (mostly) female Asian American standup comedy tour" -- has joined forces with CAAMFest. Join our pals Jenny Yang, D'Lo, and Atsuko Okatsuka for an evening of kickass comedy. It's happening Saturday, May 12 at New People Cinema in Japantown.

Most Badass Art Show Ever Pays Tribute to Bruce Lee

"Bruce Lee: Spirit of the Dragon," November 3-25 at Sketchpad Gallery


Bruce fans in San Francisco, here's something you'll want to check out. Sketchpad Gallery and the Bruce Lee Foundation present Bruce Lee: Spirit of the Dragon, a group art exhibition and charity show dedicated to Bruce Lee and his teachings. It runs November 3-25, with an opening reception on Friday, November 3.

"Spirit of the Dragon" features both local and international artists, who have done work for such companies as Lucasfilm, Pixar, Lucasfilm Animation, Industrial Light and Magic, Marvel Comics, DC, IDW, Sony and more.

Featured artists include: Kim Jung Gi, Kim Hyun Jin, Nathan Anderson, Bagger43, John-Paul Balmet, Arvin Bautista, Jamie Borja, Dawn Carlos, Cryssy Cheung, Isaac Davis, Thomas Denmark, Jackson Dryden, Duke Duel, Emonic, Nikki Lukas Longfish, Dela Longfish, Steward Lee, Ben Jelter, Kevin Kwong, Frank T Lin, Brian Kistler, Robotnicc, Dean Stuart, Lloyd Thompson, Dave Yee, Carolina Zeleski, Jeeyoon Park, Le Tang, Chris Koehler, Gary Choo, Alina Chau, and Sinic Choy, to be joined by additional artists.

SF Symphony Lunar New Year Concert & Imperial Dinner

Happy Lunar New Year! The San Francisco Symphony invites you to the Lunar New Year Concert and Imperial Dinner, a fun-filled family event celebrating the Year of the Rooster.

Featuring a diverse program of Eastern and Western repertoire, the concert will begin in a blackout with a 60-foot neon dragon dance performed by the Loong Mah Sing See Wui dance ensemble. Guest artists include Mei-Ann Chen (conductor); Tang Jun Qiao (dizi); Amos Yabng (cello). One hour prior to the concert, guests are invited to the Festival Reception with Asian instrument demonstrations, "lucky" red envelopes, tea bars, sweet and savory bites, entertainment, games are more.

Highs, lows and more highs in the stoner comedy 'Grass'

Screens Friday, March 11 at CAAMFest 2016 in San Francisco.



The arthouse stoner comedy Grass, written directed by Tanuj Chopra, makes its world premiere this week at CAAMFest 2016. Starring Pia Shah and Emily C. Chang, it's described as "an epic adventure of merriment, revelation and the quest for pizza spanning a single day in the park." And yes, there is weed.

'Breathin': The Eddie Zheng Story' is a portrait of redemption

A man journeys to freedom, rehabilitation and redemption in the feature documentary Breathin': The Eddy Zheng Story which makes its world premiere this week at CAAMFest 2016. Directed by Ben Wang, Breathin' is an intimate, resilient portrait of activist Eddie Zheng and his decades-long struggle for new life.

A celebration of film, music, food and digital media, March 10-20



Bay Area film fans, it's on. CAAMFest 2016 is going down March 10-20 in San Francisco and Oakland. Presented by the Center for Asian American Media, CAAMFest is an 11-day celebration of film, music, food and digital media from the world's most innovative Asian and Asian American artists.

This year, the Festival adds new venues in the Mission district. In addition to the historic Castro Theatre, New People Cinema in Japantown and the New Parkway Theater in Oakland, CAAMFest adds the venerable 106-year-ld Roxie Theater and the newly minted Alamo Drafthouse to its slate of venues.

CAAMFest showcases the work of new Asian and Asian American artists and pays tribute to the pioneers who have paved the way for Asian Americans in media and entertainment. The festival kicks of Thursday, March 9 with the Opening Night screening of the feature documentary Tyrus, celebrating the life and career of pioneering Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong.

Bay Area! This one's for you. The Center for Asian American Media presents CAAMFest 2016, an 11-day celebration of film, music, food and digital media from the world's most innovative Asian and Asian American artists, running March 10-20 in San Francisco and Oakland.

The festivities kick off next Thursday with the Opening Night Gala screening of Tyrus, a documentary portrait about the art, life, and enduring impact of 105 year­-old pioneering Chinese American artist Tyrus Wong. Anybody want to go? I'm giving away some free tickets. Scroll down for details.

Casting Call: Broken Blossoms Case of 1935

Seeking actors for one-time performance at the Chinese Historical Society of America in San Francisco.



Bay Area actors! The Chinese Historical Society of America is looking to cast actors for a unique live lecture/performance project with artist and photographer Eddie Wong, based on 1935's "Broken Blossoms" case. The one-time only performance, to be held on Saturday, March 5 in San Francisco, will tell the true story of four Chinese women forced into prostitution in San Francisco's Chinatown.

20th Anniversary Screening: 'Picture Bride'

Hey, San Francisco. This year marks the 20th anniversary of the groundbreaking Picture Bride, Kayo Hatta's film about Issei women, anti-miscegenation laws, and Asian immigrants in Hawaii. You can catch two screenings, both on Friday, September 25 in Japantown's New People Cinema. As a special bonus, screenwriter Mari Hatta and actress Tamlyn Tomita, who plays Kana, will be at the second screening to discuss the film.

5th Annual Fred Korematsu Day Celebration

If you're in the Bay Area, you're invited to take part in the 5th Annual Korematsu Day Celebration, a commemoration of the life and legacy of Japanese American civil rights hero Fred T. Korematsu. It's happening Friday, January 30 at City Arts and Lectures-Nourse Theatre in San Francisco.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of Mr. Korematsu's passing in 2005, and the celebration will feature a keynote address from noted actor/activist George Takei, plus other special guests.
