A month after the theatrical release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and I'm still pretty crazy about Kelly Marie Tran as Resistance tech hero Rose Tico. And I'm not afraid to admit that I've amassed a fairly substantial collection of Rose-related action figures, books and other merchandise. Yeah, I'm fanatical like that.

But in my unchecked fanaticism, I've picked up a couple of duplicate action figures. So here's a giveaway for you, the good readers of this website. I'm giving a pair of action figures: one 3.75" Resistance Tech Rose Force Link Figure and one 3.75" Rose (First Order Disguise) Force Link Figure/BB-8/BB-9E Pack.

Each figure, produced by Hasbro, is detailed with movie-inspired design and includes character-inspired accessories. Bay Area film fans! This one's for you. The Center for Asian American Media presents CAAMFest 2017, the nation's premiere event showcasing and celebrating bold and vibrant Asian American stories and storytellers. The 11-day festival, celebrating its 35th year, runs March 9-19 in San Francisco and Oakland.

The festival kicks off on Thursday, March 9 with the Opening Night Gala screening of Lena Khan's comedy The Tiger Hunter, starring Danny Pudi as an ambitious young man who leaves his small Indian village in pursuit of the American dream. Bay Area! This one's for you. The Center for Asian American Media presents CAAMFest 2016, an 11-day celebration of film, music, food and digital media from the world's most innovative Asian and Asian American artists, running March 10-20 in San Francisco and Oakland.

Based on Benson Lee's real-life experiences, with a cast that includes Justin Chon, Jessika Van and In-Pyo Cha, Seoul Searching is an homage to John Hughes' teen dramedies of the 80s. Set in the summer of 1986, the story centers on a group of Korean high school misfits from around the world who are shipped off to attend a government-sponsored culture camp in Seoul to learn what it means to be Korean. Between the booze, fist fights, raging hormones and identity crises, it turns out to be the most memorable summer of their lives.

One of this year's featured LAAPFF programs, East of Main Street: Taking the Lead, is the fifth and latest season of HBO's documentary series celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage month. This year's edition, directed and produced by Jonathan Yi, focuses on Asian Americans working in the film and television community, including Lucy Liu, Daniel Dae Kim, BD Wong, Aasif Mandvi and more.

Giveaway: Jeff Chang's 'Who We Be: The Colorization of America'

From the award-winning author of 'Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation'



If there's one book you pick up this week, it has to be Who We Be: The Colorization of America by scholar/author Jeff Chang, now available on shelves from St. Martin's Press. The book, a follow-up to his award-winning classic Can't Stop Won't Stop: A History of the Hip-Hop Generation, examines the seismic racial and cultural transformation of the United States over the last fifty years.

"How do Americans see race now? ...After eras framed by words like 'multicultural' and 'post-racial,' do we see each other any more clearly?" Who We Be covers a lot of ground, offering a wide-ranging history of racialized culture debates and movements over the last half-century. The book is thoughtful, provocative and even playful, remixing comic strips, contemporary art and other media to paint a unique, timely portrait of today's America. Considering everything that's going down in our communities right now, as we speak, Who We Be is required reading.

On top of all that, it's just a cool-looking book. I anticipate that Who We Be will end up assigned on the syllabus of a lot of cultural studies courses. But instead of trading it back to the campus bookstore (what a racket!) at the end of the semester, you'll end up keeping it for your collection. It's that kind of book.

AMC hit zombie drama The Walking Dead returns for its fifth season this Sunday, October 12. Last season left off on a bit of a cliffhanger, with Rick and his merry crew of walker slayers finally reuniting, but captured and locked away in a train car by some mysterious new adversaries. How will they get out this jam?

And of course, we get to see Steven Yeun as our favorite Asian American zombie apocalypse survivor Glenn Rhee. According to this interview in Entertainment Weekly, Steven says Glenn "is a leader" in season five.

Hey, movie fans. If you're looking for something a little offbeat, I point you in the direction of the indie found-footage sci-fi/thriller/comedy Unidentified, about a trip to Vegas gone inexplicably very very very wrong.

Written and directed by Jason R. Miller, and starring Parry Shen, Colton Dunn, Eddie Mui and Eric Attell, the movie mixes science fiction, suspense and laughs to create a unique, crazy take on an otherworldly encounter. Our friends Parry and Eddie also put in double duty as producers on the project.
