New Documentary Revisits the Legend of Linsanity

'38 at the Garden' premieres October 11 on HBO.

I'll always remember the night Jeremy Lin dropped a stunning 38 points on the Lakers at Madison Square Garden. A new documentary short, 38 at the Garden, chronicles the extraordinary ascendance of your favorite Asian American point guard during his landmark 2012 season with the New York Knicks -- the period that affectionately became known as "Linsanity." You know the story. But I'll never get tired of it.

A decade later, Lin's stature as a groundbreaking, cultural icon stands in stark relief to the recent hate crimes against the Asian American and Pacific Islander community. 38 at the Garden recognizes a pivotal moment in time for Lin and celebrates a phenomenon that was bigger than basketball for the world. The film features a candid, new interview with Lin, as well as journalists Lisa Ling and Pablo Torre, comedians Ronny Chieng, Hasan Minhaj and Jenny Yang, and Knicks teammates Tyson Chandler and Iman Shumpert.

Here's the trailer:

Japanese Americans speak out against Andrew Yang's Op-Ed
Japanese American leaders are criticizing former Democratic presidential candidate Andrew Yang's call to Asian Americans to display patriotism during the coronavirus pandemic, saying it brings back painful memories of the rhetoric directed at Americans of Japanese ancestry who were incarcerated during World War II.

"China Poisoned Our People"
A new campaign ad from Republican congressional candidate Kathaleen Wall, who is running for Texas' 22nd Congressional District, seizes the moment and goes heavy on the anti-China rhetoric. "China poisoned our people," a narrator says in the ad, which then lauds President Donald Trump for calling COVID-19 the "Chinese virus." You can probably expect to see a lot more of this shit pretty soon.

Real Korean Moms React to "Brad Makes Kimchi"

Let us turn to a trusted source.

If you've ever wanted to see a white dude dressed as Christopher Columbus get slapped in the face with a fistful of kimchi -- really, who hasn't? -- look no further than this great video from Bad Appetite Magazine.

As if that alone wasn't awesome enough, the actual video features a couple of legit Korean moms talking about how to make kimchi. Or rather, offering a few critical thoughts on one guy's kimchi-making technique.

The video, produced by our friend Jenny Yang, is a response to "Brad Makes Kimchi," a recent video by Bon Appétit, in which a white dude named Brad shows you how to make kimchi. Nothing wrong with a white dude named Brad showing you how to make kimchi, but we definitely didn't need anybody to "de-mystify" it, as he puts it. The Columbus-ing vibe of it all bugged the hell out of a lot of folks.

So let us turn to a trusted source: Korean moms. What do the experts think of Brad and his kimchi?

They Call Us Bruce - Episode 14: They Call Us #UglyDelicious

Jeff Yang and Phil Yu present an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America.

What's up, podcast listeners? We've got another episode of our podcast They Call Us Bruce. Each week, my good friend, writer/columnist Jeff Yang and I host an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America, with a strong focus on media, entertainment and popular culture.

This week, we welcome comedian/writer Jenny Yang and Eater NY News Editor Serena Dai, who broke the story about the white chef that's been serving up sushi while speaking with a faux Japanese accent. We discuss food, its deep connection to culture, and things that make you say "Yo, I don't know about that."

Organize a lunchtime potluck for your office and share photos of you, your coworkers, and of course, your stanky-ass food using the hashtag #foodtowork.

Jenny Yang has some "gentle fun" with white people

"How was Burning Man?"

In ongoing saga of Jesse Watters' unwelcome visit to Chinatown, the now-infamous, craptastically racist Fox News segment has inspired some epic clap backs. In addition to Ronny Chieng's ferocious segment on The Daily Show, we've now got this awesome woman-on-the-street piece featuring our homegirl Jenny Yang.

Since Bill O'Reilly sent Watters to Chinatown to have some "gentle fun" (also known as racist fuckery) with Chinese Americans, Fusion Comedy sent Jenny to Beverly Hills to have some "gentle fun" with white people.

Forrest Wheeler describing a pager will make you feel old

'Fresh Off The Boat' star says it's "like an iPhone." But without a screen or apps.

As fans of Fresh Off The Boat are aware, much of the show's humor is derived from some good old-fashioned '90s nostalgia. But we sometimes forget that the show's young stars weren't even alive yet during the nineties.

On Tuesday at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, comedian Jenny Yang and I hosted a live screening of Fresh Off the Boat, featuring members of the show's cast and crew, including stars Forrest Wheeler, Ian Chen and Lucille Soong, writers Ali Wong and Sanjay Shah, and executive producer Melvin Mar.

During the Q&A, an audience member asked Forrest and Ian, who play brothers Emery and Evan Huang, what Fresh Off The Boat had taught them about 1990s pop culture. Forrest proceeded to describe what he had learned about pagers... and made us all feel some kind of way.

Odd Ways Our Asian Moms Say "I Love You"

Jenny Yang, Christine Minji Chang and Joy Regullano channel their Asian moms.

Immigrant parents speak a unique language of love. And it doesn't necessarily mean saying the actual words, "I love you." Often, it sounds like the love in this hilariously awesome BuzzFeed video, Odd Ways Our Asian Moms Say "I Love You," in which Jenny Yang, Christine Minji Chang and Joy Regullano expertly channel their Asian moms and drop some truth. Asian Mom Truth. This is so real it hurts:

This White Guy can't handle the Racist Sexist Improv Class

"A sword collection? Really? Your yellow fever is getting out of control, man."

People of color doing the Hollywood hustle know the struggle. If you've attended an improv class, or an acting workshop, or sketch comedy thing or whatever, it's likely you've encountered a fair share of racist and/or sexist bullshit, as well as some ridiculously dismissive weak-ass excuses for why it's not racist and/or sexist bullshit -- usually from a room of mostly white dudes. In this amazing YouTube sketch, Anna Akana flips the tables.

This is ferociously brilliant. Take a look:

When You Realize He Has Yellow Fever

Jenny Yang re-enacts a real-life encounter with a particularly acute case of the fever.

It's an awkward moment, my sisters. When you're with a white guy, and that unfortunate epiphany strikes like lightning, When You Realize He Has Yellow Fever. My friend Jenny Yang has been there. In this BuzzFeed video, she explains why she doesn't date white guys, sharing a story and re-enacting a real-life encounter with one particularly acute case of yellow fever. It's pretty damn hilarious.

Based on a true story...
