Angry Reader of the Week: Albert Kim

Heyyyyy. Take a moment out of your holiday funk and check it out. Time to meet the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Albert Kim.

Who are you?

Albert Kim. I used to occasionally go by Albert O. Kim, but only because I thought it was cool that my initials were AOK. I don’t do that any more.

What are you?

I’m a television writer and producer. Most recently, I was Co-Executive Producer of The CW drama, Nikita (which sadly comes to an end this week). I’m currently writing a legal thriller pilot for The CW. And in a former life, I was a magazine journalist. I wrote and edited for Sports Illustrated, Entertainment Weekly, Details, and People.

More importantly, I’m father to Jason and Emily, and husband to Jennie.

Where are you?

At the beach. Specifically, Manhattan Beach. If you’re going to live in Southern California, why live anywhere but by the ocean?

Where are you from?

Born in New York City, raised in Manhattan, Bronx, Queens, and Tenafly, N.J. I’ve lived in California for the last eight years, but my heart is still in the Eastern time zone.

What do you do?

Tell stories. In some fashion or another, I’ve spent most of my life as a storyteller.

What are you all about?

Curiosity. Reinvention. Exploration.

And passion... in the nerdiest sense of the word. At various times in my life, I’ve been fanatically devoted to any number of geeky interests, including (but not limited to) comic books, science fiction, videogames, sports, and music. I can recall with alarming detail nearly every episode of Cheers, Star Trek: The Next Generation, and Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I still own a couple of hundred vinyl LPs, as well as the entire 1973 Topps baseball card set. And the first thing I ever had published was a Letter to the Editor in Howard the Duck, the comic book.

All of which, in one way or another, has helped me enormously in my professional life. Not that I ever planned that. Indulge your passions. You never know where they might lead.

What makes you angry?

Ignorance driven by ideology or agenda. Elitism of any kind, particularly cultural (don’t tell me you don’t watch TV unless you’re happy admitting you don’t want to be taken seriously). Wanton cruelty. Unfettered greed. Cynicism masquerading as criticism. And Time Warner Cable.
