Popular ice cream man gunned down in Oakland

45-year-old Jasvir Singh was fatally shot Saturday in his ice cream truck.



Tragic news out of the Bay Area... In Oakland, police are searching a gunman in the killing of a well-known neighborhood ice cream vendor who was fatally shot in his ice crime truck.

The suspect is identified as 23-year-old Joevan Lopez, who is wanted in connection with the shooting death of 45-year-old Jasvir Singh, who was gunned down while he was driving his ice cream truck on Saturday afternoon in East Oakland. Police say the suspect approached the vehicle and fired five times before running away through backyards. According to witnesses, Singh crashed the van into a parked car during the shooting.

Singh reportedly died on the scene.

Earlier this month at a New Jersey ice cream counter, the mother of a teenage employee told an Asian American customer to "go back to China." The racially charged incident, and subsequent attempts to address and resolve the issue, resulted in a blowup on Facebook and in the local newspaper.

Laura Lim, who is Korean American, was at the Scoop Coop ice cream window in East Hanover on July 12 when the employee at the counter gave her "attitude." The mother of the teenage employee, who was seated near the window, heard the conversation and told Lim to "go back to China." Classy, yo.
