The Weird History of Asian Sex Stereotypes

MTV's Decoded drops some six-minute truth about western perceptions of Asian sexuality.

Why are Asian women considered "sexy" and "desirable"? While are Asian men considered... well, not. It's a pervasive, seemingly age-old perception that has plagued Asian men and women in various ways, from media representation to shitty bar encounters to ridiculously unproductive internet commentary.

Seriously (not seriously), we've been discussing and debating this topic in internet forums since at least 1957.

In this video for MTV's Decoded, Franchesca Ramsey drops some six-minute truth about these destructive and persistent western perceptions of Asian sexuality. She attempts to get at the origins of these ideas, breaking down some historical and sociological background for folks getting to the conversation a little late.

Naturally, this explanation required the presence of a buff and gratuitously shirtless Asian dude.

Who will win season eight of America's Best Dance Crew?

Will it be Quest Crew, SuperCr3w or Kinjaz? Vote now.

All right, folks. Your vote matters. I'm talking about, of course, America's Best Dance Crew. Three totally kickass crews, Quest Crew, SuperCr3w and Kinjaz, have made it to the finals of MTV's dance competition, and your vote will determine who is crowned the ABDC All Star Champions. All three crews delivered stunning, mic-dropping final performances on last night's penultimate show of Season 8.

I mean, just watch:

This Show Has The Most Asians on TV Right Now

MTV's 'America's Best Dance Crew' is back for an all-star showdown.

America's Best Dance Crew is back! MTV's groundbreaking team dance competition returned to the airwaves last week, bringing back the show's previous champions for an all-star showdown culminating at the VMAs. You all know I was a huge fan of the show in its heyday, so I'm extra pumped to see all these crews back in top form.

And let's just say it: between the collective membership of Quest Crew, Super Cr3w, Kinjaz, We Are Heroes and I.aM.mE Crew, ABDC is the show with the most Asians on TV right now. No joke.

It's difficult to choose favorite. I love all the crews, but their styles are so different. Quest is, of course, a perennial standout. However, I'm also extra rooting for Kinjaz, a new crew that includes dancers from first season champions Jabbawockeez and first season fan-favorites Kaba Modern.

At this point, I have two gripes about the show.

Jose Antonio Vargas gets "uncomfortable" in the MTV documentary 'White People'

So many White People Tears.

Caucasian people shifting nervously in their seats. Frank discussions about racial privilege. White People Tears. So many White People Tears. This is what we are promised in the trailer for the new documentary White People from Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and filmmaker Jose Antonio Vargas, premiering July 22 on MTV.

In White People, Vargas travels around the country to team up with five young people and explore what it really means to be young and white in America -- and why it matters. They'll delve into issues of white privilege, affirmative action and racial identity -- things that are not always easy to talk about. (Especially when you don't regularly have to think about them.) As you can see in the trailer, it's going to get uncomfortable.

MTV seeks "Asian American Best Friends" for reality show

Casting "fun fashionistas" who are "proud of their Asian American heritage."

Having thoroughly exploited drunk housemates, teenage moms, expectant teenage moms, online couples and the real Orange County, among many other reality television endeavors, it appears that MTV now has its sights set on making a show about "fun, fabulous and fancy" young Asian Americans.

Do you have an incredible group of friends who know how to spend a buck or two?

According to this casting call, MTV is looking for a group of young Asian American friends who "aren't wary of spending what they earn (or don't!) and are proud of their Asian American heritage." Throw in a little in-group drama and some classic Asian parental disappointment, and you've got a recipe for reality TV.

Here's the casting call:

Teen Wolf fans surely already know this, but I just wanted to remind you that season four of MTV's mega-popular supernatural drama premieres tonight, featuring our friend (and former Angry Reader of the Week) Arden Cho in her newly-minted, official series regular status as Kira Yukimura.

The show's new opening credit sequence includes Arden as the newest member of the pack:

Foxy Lady: Arden Cho joins the cast of MTV's Teen Wolf

Some cool casting news, particularly because it involves a friend... Looks like actress Arden Cho will star as a significant upcoming new character on the MTV supernatural drama Teen Wolf: Teen Wolf Casting Scoop: Arden Cho Joins Season 3B as Beacon Hills' New Student -- and Threat?!

Arden will be joining the second half of the hit series' third season next year in a "heavy recurring role" for a major, multi-episode arc. Not a lot of specific details about her character, but according to the show's producer, the show's storyline will have "a heavy Asian influence." And that's where Ms. Cho's Korean/Japanese character comes in.

Cigarette Hat and Other WTF Moments at the MTV Movie Awards

So... if you missed the MTV Movie Awards, then you missed Hana Mae Lee with a giant cigarette butt on her head. You think I am joking. But last night, the Pitch Perfect star got dressed, drove to the MTV Movie Awards, and just as she was about to step on to the red carpet, an evil giant put out his cigarette on poor Hana's head:
