Hari Kondabolu is the A/P/A Institute at NYU Artist-in-Residence

Kickoff event planned for October 15



This is some pretty awesome news. The Asian/Pacific/American Institute at New York University recently announced comedian Hari Kondabolu as its 2014-15 Artist-in-Residence. Hari, who is based in Brooklyn, has had one hell of a year, between appearances on NPR's Fresh Air, Conan, Late Show with David Letterman, the release of his debut album Waiting for 2042, and now hooking up with NYU.

But what does it actually mean? Each year, New York University hosts an artist to hold residency with its Asian/Pacific/American Institute. Artists-in-Residence are invited to bring their notoriety, artistic work, and history of involvement with the APA community to NYU. The Artist-in-Residence uses his or her time at A/P/A to create important new work, artistic retrospectives, forums, or conferences.

Hari is A/P/A Institute's first Comedian-in-Residence. Here's his statement:

Heads up, New York! This Saturday, April 26, is the 8th Annual New York City Asian American Student Conference. The theme this years is "Roots," focusing on how history shapes our contemporary understandings of the APA community. Network and workshop with locally based speakers and performers and help build solidarity and initiative both within the APA community and beyond. Here's more info:

Conversation with Directors Zhang Yimou and Ang Lee

New York film fans, check this out. Academy Award-winning director Ang Lee and celebrated Fifth Generation Chinese director Zhang Yimou are having a public conversation this Thursday at NYU. The talk will be moderated by Oscar-nominated documentary filmmaker and professor Christine Choy of Tisch School of the Arts. So you know it's going to be a lively time. It's happening March 27 in Cooper Union.

Titan Lee-Hai was seen stark naked and apparently high on drugs before he died

Another tragic story out of New York City, where a college student, reportedly stark naked and apparently under the influence of drugs, fell 15 stories to this death from the room of a dormitory.

NYU freshman, 18, was naked, on mushrooms just before fatal fall: sources

18-year-old Titan Lee-Hai, a New York University freshman from Trinidad, fell from NYU's Third North dorm at 3:20am on Monday, the semester's first day of classes.

According to one student, Lee-Hai was tripping on mushrooms. A classmate who encountered him in the elevator just before he died says Lee-Hai -- completely naked and "not in his senses" -- punched him in the face:

Who We Be: Jeff Chang + Kiese Laymon, April 18

New York! On Thursday, April 18, Jeff Chang (of Can't Stop Won't Stop fame) will be speaking with writer Kiese Laymon at NYU. The talk is entitled "Who We Be: on the Resurrection of Multiculturalism, the New Demographics, and the Post-Racial." It's all related to Chang's forthcoming book, Who We Be: The Colorization of America, in which the author analyzes the development of a multicultural society -- and questions why we still cannot hold frank conversations about race.
