Donald Trump had a "Where Are You From?" moment with a Korean American intelligence analyst.



By now, you've heard about Donald Trump's recent remarks describing Haiti, El Salvador and African nations as "shithole countries." And by now, none of this should surprise you. Given the consistent, overwhelming evidence of Trump's ridiculous inability to grasp anything beyond his own wealthy white male entitlement, we passed the point of surprise a long time ago. If you're surprised, it's on you.

And so, here is another entry into the long log of Trump's unsurprising racism and sexism. Amid the "shithole" backlash, NBC News reports on a previous exchange, in which Trump asked an Asian American intelligence analyst about where her "people" are from, then referred to her as a "pretty Korean lady," and suggested that she should be involved with his administration's talks with North Korea.

Yup. Trump pulled a "Where are you from?"

It's an annoying, perpetual line of questioning that some of us Asian Americans are way too familiar with. In this case, it came from the President of the United States, but it ran its predictable course like a steady river.

By now, literally nothing about this should surprise you.



When Donald Trump traveled to Asia a few weeks ago to meet with leaders in Japan, South Korea, China, Vietnam and the Philippines, you figured it was going to be a shitshow, or awkward at best. Turns out, for Trump, the trip gave him license to mock Asians after the fact, several weeks later.

On Wednesday, during a speech in St. Charles, Missouri, Trump said he told several Asian leaders that they need to increase their defense spending. Then Trump imitated what he claimed was their reaction, hunching and giving a look that he described as meaning "they know they're getting away with murder."

Asian American voters strongly favored Clinton over Trump

In AALDEF's exit poll of 14,400 Asian American voters, Clinton favored over Trump by wide margin.



In the ongoing assessment of the whos and whats and whys and hows of Election Day, it looks like Asian American voters strongly favored Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump by a wide margin.

Preliminary exit poll findings released by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) from 14,400 Asian American voters reveal that Asian American voters in the swing states of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Virginia and Nevada strongly favored Clinton over Trump.

"The extreme anti-immigrant, anti-Muslim, and racist rhetoric in this election was deeply disturbing to Asian American voters, who wanted to support candidates who shared their values and hope for America," said Margaret Fung, Executive Director of AALDEF.

AALDEF collected surveys from Asian American voters at 91 polling places in 14 states with large or fast-growing Asian American populations. Based on Asian American voters polled on Election Day, 79% backed Hillary Clinton, 17% were for Donald Trump, and 3% voted for other candidates.

At this point, there is pretty much nothing Donald Trump can say that will surprise us. So why should we be surprised that the Republican presidential candidate compared the U.S.'s trade deficit with China to rape?

The anti-China rhetoric is not much of a shocker -- this is an election, after all. Xenophobic China-bashing is a major part of the campaign playbook. And everybody knows that Trump loves to talk about China.

Might as well throw a sexual violence metaphor on top of all the fear-mongering.

'Allegiance' has been saving a seat for Donald Trump

Donald Trump has a standing open invitation to attend a performance of the Broadway musical Allegiance, issued by star George Takei himself. They've even been saving a seat for him at every performance.

Last week, Takei issued a video response to Trump's recent comments regarding both the Muslim community and Japanese American internment camps. The Republican presidential candidate called for a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. and could not definitively say whether or not he would have supported the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. His supporters seem to think it was a good idea.

I am now consciously trying to refrain from contributing to Trump-related noise, because fuck that guy. But I couldn't resist sharing this segment from The Daily Show, in which host Trevor Noah, in response to the Republican presidential candidate's call for the United States to ban all Muslims from entering the country, bestows Donald Trump with a pretty damn great new moniker: "White ISIS."

Daily Show Senior Political Correspondent Hasan Minhaj, who happens to be Muslim himself, broke it down.

"I think this is where the evidence points: Donald Trump is an extremist leader who came out of nowhere," Minhaj explained. "He's self-financed, recruits through social media, attracts his followers with a radical ideology to take over the world, and is actively trying to promote a war between Islam and the West."

It all points to a frightening truth:

Donald Trump did not say that he would have been in favor of Japanese internment during World War II. But he couldn't definitively say that he wouldn't be in favor of internment. And that alone is troubling as fuck.

In August 2013, Donald Trump jumped into the political scene, spouting China's destruction of the U.S. economy and his distrust of President Obama's claims to legitimate birthright citizenship. The general public and mainstream media counted him out as crazy, figuring such comments would make him a long shot at being a legitimate presidential candidate. Yet, in 2015, we have him hosting Saturday Night Live and near the top of the Republican polls. He's still bashing China and now he's talking about anchor babies and birth tourism.
