Spotted this on Reddit... This email, sent to an Asian student last week from someone apparently representing University Housing at Georgia State (the particulars have been partially obscured, but I'm taking an educated guess).

So get this. The Asian student is singled out regarding a complaint about "a lingering smell of Asian food." The recipient is urged to "take care of this." Here's the text from the email, with a little bit of deductive construction:

four suspects arrested in quadruple murder

Crazy news out of Southern California... this week, police arrested four suspects in connection with a quadruple homicide at a house Northridge: 4 arrested in Las Vegas in Northridge slayings.

Two men and two women were found shot dead last weekend in an illegal boarding house in San Fernando Valley. Three of the bodies were found face-down, and the victims appeared to have been shot at close range.

On Tuesday, Los Angeles police detectives arrested four people, identified as Ka Pasasouk, Howard Alcantara, Donna Rabulan and Christina Neal, at a Las Vegas casino in connection with the murders.

The attack allegedly was sparked by a dispute over personal property.

Today marks the 71st anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. Because I just couldn't help myself, I took to Twitter and did a quick-and-dirty search to see if "observances" were taking the form of unhealthy anti-Japanese sentiment. Why the hell did I bother looking? Sometimes you already know what's coming:

Asians behaving badly... creepy fake masseuse edition! In Dallas, police at Southern Methodist University arrested a man who posed as a student while roaming through dorm hallways offering female students free massages: Man allegedly posed as SMU student, offered free massages.

The suspect, identified as 24-year-old Eswin Kim (there seems to be some discrepancy in reports over whether his name is Eswin or Edwin), posed as an SMU student in the Morrison-McGinnis residence hall and passed out flyers offering free massages. He was charged with criminal trespass:

military legislation includes anti-hazing provisions

An important development in the aftermath of the Danny Chen hazing case... This week, the U.S. Senate passed the National Defense Authorization Act of 2013, which includes legislation to prevent and address hazing in the military: Senate Passes Anti-Hazing, Diversity In Military Legislation.

The provisions would require the military to report on their policies to improve anti-hazing, training and response. Another provision would require the Secretary of Defense to development of procedures to allow soldiers to anonymously report incidents of hazing.

Year after year, the National Defense Authorization Act always has controversial, debatable elements. Hopefully, the provision on hazing isn't one of them. The act must now go to conference in the House. Remember Danny Chen!

david phan's family sets up anti-bullying fund

Got this passed along to me... The news of 14-year-old David Phan's tragic suicide shocked communities everywhere -- another young life lost to the torment of bullying. But his family is hoping that David's death will not be in vain.

To spread awareness about the issue of bullying, David's family has set up a memorial Wells Fargo account in his name. In lieu of flowers, donations can made to the Anti-Bullying Foundation: In Memory of David Phan. All funds donated will go towards education and outreach efforts against bullying.

ted chiang's "story of your life" to be adapted into movie

Some movie news... Just read about an upcoming feature film in the works, Story of Your Life, based on the award-winning science fiction short story by noted author Ted Chiang: Shawn Levy-Produced 'Story of My Life' Finds Financing, Nic Mathieu Directing.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Nic Mathieu will direct the big screen science fiction flick, financed and produced by FilmNation and Lava Bear Films.

The script, adapted by Eric Heisserer, is described as a "mind-bending sci-fi thriller with a powerful emotional twist," and involves alien visitors and language translators and stuff:
