Last week, artist unveiled the first mural in Oakland honoring Olympic gold medalist figure skater Alysa Liu. The Illuminaries, a local graffiti artist group, designed and painted a mural in the Temescal neighborhood, on the corner of Telegraph and 43rd Streetm to celebrate the hometown hero.

Buddhist Church of Sacramento vandalized with white nationalist symbols

Last month, vandals spray-painted hate symbols and white nationalist graffiti on the exterior walls of Buddhist Church of Sacramento. The church has a large population of Japanese Americans, and the vandalism occurred on February 19, the anniversary of Executive Order 9066, which authorized the incarceration of over 100,000 Japanese citizens and immigrants during World War II. The community's efforts to clean up the graffiti have reportedly been... challenging.

Torrance Police Investigate Hate Crime After Store Finds Threatening Note
"Do not forget you are in America. We can do anything we want." In Torrance, California -- yes, friggin' Torrance again -- police are investigating this racist, threatening note that was found pinned to the front door of a Japanese cookware shop. Among many others things, the printed screed reads "go back to Japan" and threatens violence. "We are going to bomb your store if you don't listen and we know where you live." This is a hate crime. There's been some speculation on social media that the note, based on grammar and spelling, was not written by a native English speaker. Maybe. But also I have complete confidence that plenty of Americans, born and raised here, can't write for shit.

New Jersey Chinese Restaurant Vandalized with Racist COVID-19 Graffiti
A Chinese restaurant in New Jersey was vandalized with hateful messages regarding the coronavirus overnight Wednesday. The owner of New Gourmet Garden in Wyckoff arrived in the morning to discover racist spray-painted graffiti on the restaurant's storefront, including "coronavirus" and "COVID-19" with an arrow pointing at the front door and "Go home to China." The incident -- the second time a business has been vandalized during the pandemic -- is being investigated as a hate crime.

California Assemblyman Accused of Making Racist Remarks
A coalition of Silicon Valley civil rights leaders are calling for a California legislator to resign over "racist and bigoted" comments they say he made about African American and Latinx children's ability to learn and compete in school. Assemblyman Kansen Chu's alleged comments were printed in the Chinese language newspaper World Journal, in a June 11 article, in which Chu said many Hispanic Americans told him "they did not care about their children's education, they are busy with their livelihoods, and they did not intend to let their children attend college." Chu is also alleged to have said "many Hispanic and African ethnic groups are unable to compete or have the ability to continue their studies due to unresolved structural economic and educational problems." Chu claims the World Journal article "was written with the reporter's own opinion and not direct or literal quotes from me," and the translation was inaccurate.

Last week in New York, racist graffiti was found scrawled on the window of a West Village Korean restaurant. Somebody wrote "Stop eating dogs" in black marker on the outside glass at Jeju Noodle Bar, which has been closed since March 16. Chef and owner Douglas Kim is calling it a hate crime. You're damn right it is.

A recently opened Sikh spiritual center in the Sacramento area was defaced with racist graffiti. The sign in front of the Guru Maneyo Granth Gurdwara Sahib Sikh Center in Orangevale had a swastika and the words "white power" sprayed onto it sometime between Sunday night and Monday morning.

Hmong family's home targeted with racist graffiti

Vandals spray-painted "CHINKS" on the garage door.



There's nothing quite like someone asshole spray-painting "CHINKS" in giant letters across the front of your house to make you feel welcome in the neighborhood. Over the weekend in Minnesota, a Hmong family's home was targeted by vandals who defaced their garage door and car with hate graffiti.

Police investigate racist graffiti in Oakdale

The incident occurred early Sunday morning at a home in Oakdale, a Twin Cities suburb. The vandals spray-painted the racial slur on the garage door, and "Lick my bulls" [sic] across the side of a car. Really?

TL Xiong, who lives at the home with this parents, posted photos of the vandalism on Facebook. He noted that his family moved in to the house only two months ago and warned the vandals that "karma will get you."

What is it with racist vandals who can't leave a clean surface alone? Congratulations, asshole. It's like you took a public shit with a Sharpie pen. This particular idiotic little act of handwritten hate was spotted over the weekend at Chinese Garden Park in Oakland's Chinatown. As you can see, someone scrawled the words "CHINAMAN" "CANTON" "INDIANS" "BITCH" and "CHINK" on the park sign. I guess the author is suggesting "Chinaman" as a replacement for "Chinese." And the rest are... alternatives? In order of preference?

The Sikh Society of Calgary was found defaced with spray-painted hate symbols.



This one comes to us from Canada... but I'm okay with blaming Trump for this too. In Calgary, police are investigating a possible hate crime after someone vandalized a Sikh gurdwara with hate graffiti.

On Thursday morning, the grounds of the Sikh Society of Calgary were found defaced with graffiti depicting a swastika and profanity. The six affected areas included several exterior building walls, doors and a sign.

In Orange County, police are investigating a possible hate crime after a Korean American church was vandalized with swastikas, German writing and other graffiti early Sunday morning.

Buena Park church vandalized with swastikas

Members of the True Light Christian Church in Buena Park found the church's outside walls tagged in red spray paint with the phrase "mein Ehrenheit" ("my honor"), a broken heart with the words "toxic love," as well as several swastikas. Because your racist scrawling just isn't complete without a fucking swastika.

Who is spray-painting this racist graffiti in Garden Grove?

The phrase "South Viet Whores" has been found tagged in multiple locations around the area.



Straight outta Orange County... this photo was submitted by a reader who says they spotted this racist graffiti on Newland Street near Trask Avenue in Garden Grove. It seems that the author feels a certain way about "South Viet Whores" and "Chinese Fuckes" and decided to publicly express that sentiment with spray paint.

This photo was taken on Monday, but evidence suggests that the graffiti has perhaps been there for at least a month. Several Twitter mentions indicate that the "South Viet Whores" tag has been spotted elsewhere in the vicinity, including on Bolsa Avenue and at the H Mart on Garden Grove Blvd, at least as early as last August.

Gotcha, sucka. On Thursday, the man arrested for spray-painting anti-Chinese graffiti -- "NO MORE CHINESE" -- around southeast San Francisco was found guilty of hate crime vandalism.

62-year-old John Schenone was convicted of seven misdemeanors counts vandalism and six misdemeanor counts of a hate crime by way of defacing property in connection to the racist graffiti discovered last fall.

20-year-old Brodie Durazo was arrested for spray-painting anti-Muslim graffiti at Gurdwara Singh Sabha.



In Buena Park, California, a 20-year-old man has been arrested for the vandalism of a Sikh temple that was spray-painted with anti-Muslim profanity. Police had been investigating the incident as a hate crime.

On Wednesday, police questioned Brodie Durazo, who admitted to committing the vandalism at Gurdwara Singh Sabha last week. Community members discovered graffiti on the exterior of the temple, as well as "FUCK ISIS" and gang references spray-painted on a tractor-trailer in the temple's parking lot.

SFPD Makes Arrest In Duboce Triangle Racist Vandalism Incident

46-year-old Billy Samuels was caught on a surveillance camera writing "FUCK YOU GOOK" with a black marker on Kan's garage in Duboce Park on August 15. According to police, Samuels was arrested after officers recognized him from a crime bulletin with still photos taken from the video.

Gotcha, sucka! In San Francisco, a suspect has been arrested in connection with the string of racist graffiti that recently appeared in the Portola neighborhood. Residents discovered several areas that were hit with the message "NO MORE CHINESE" over the weekend (and perhaps earlier).

62-year-old San Francisco resident John Schenone is charged with five counts of felony hate crime and five counts of felony vandalism. According to SFPD, officers matched Schenone and his vehicle to the description of the suspect from the crime alert. He was arrested on Tuesday night and booked at the County Jail.

Community members respond to ant-Chinese graffiti in San Francisco's Portola neighborhood.



Over the weekend, several instances of anti-Chinese graffiti were recently discovered in San Francisco, mostly in the Portola neighborhood. All were done with the same colored spray paint, wording and lettering, by someone declaring the racist message NO MORE CHINESE. Several news outlets have picked up on the story, and the incidents are being investigated by San Francisco Police as vandalism and a hate crime.

With all the negative attention, the city acted relatively fast to remove the offending graffiti from affected surfaces. But not before quite a few concerned citizens took photos, spread the word, and even took upon themselves to add a little subversive flavor of their own to the artist's original message of intolerance. I added my own Photoshop fix -- "KNOW MORE CHINESE" -- to the photo above.

Dragon School is a neighborhood youth project to paint 99 golden dragons in Oakland's Chinatown.



Have you heard about the dragons in Oakland? I recently about an awesome community project happening in Oakland Chinatown called Dragon School. Founded by artist Luqman Lin, the project empowers local youth to reclaim their own neighborhood by teaching kids to beautify the walls with 99 golden dragons.

Luqman, who has been doing street art in Oakland and elsewhere for years, came up with the idea to paint 99 dragons in Chinatown to reclaim the community and walls. So he teaches young people how to paint dragons, offering templates and instructional YouTube videos. Like this one:

Racist graffiti found etched on sidewalk in Flushing

Sometimes, you can encounter hate while just going for walk. Just look down.



Sometimes, you can encounter hate while just going for walk. You don't even to see or talk to anyone. Just look down at the ground and there it is. Like this week in New York, where anti-Asian graffiti was found scratched into sidewalk cement outside a Queens apartment building.

The message read, "ALL YOU CHINK GO BACK TO CHINA!!!"

Racist Remark Found Etched In Sidewalk Outside Flushing Apartment Building

The vandalism, which was carved into wet cement on the sidewalk outside of the Cherry Manor Condos in Flushing, made local news when it was brought to the attention of City Councilman Peter Koo via social media.

The councilman's office contacted the building owner and the city's Department of Transportation, which dispatched a crew to buff out the sidewalk on Tuesday morning, removing the vandalism

Tech entrepreneur's home targeted with racist slur

Vandal caught on camera scrawling "FUCK YOU GOOK" on Justin Kan's garage door.



Justin Kan woke up Saturday morning to discover that he was the victim of a hate crime.

The San Francisco tech entrepreneur, who is Chinese American, came outside to find that a someone had scrawled "FUCK YOU GOOK!" in black ink on his garage door in the Duboce Triangle neighborhood.

Security camera footage shows a white, bearded man with a baseball cap and gray hoodie walking up to Kan's home at 3:38 am Saturday morning, pulling a marker out of his backpack, and writing his "greeting" on the garage door. Kan is apparently one of the few Asian Americans who live on the street.

Kan, a partner at the startup seed-funding group Y Combinator, shared the vandal's "masterpiece" on Twitter:
