Fund This: Koreatown Dreaming - A Photo Book
Chronicling the photos and stories of immigrant small business owners of Los Angeles' Koreatown.
Koreatown Dreaming, by photographer/filmmaker Emanuel Hahn, chronicles the photos and stories of Korean immigrant small business owners who helped build Los Angeles' Koreatown into the iconic neighborhood that it is today. According to the book's Kickstarter, the project was borne out of a sense of urgency around documenting the stories of Koreatown, in a time of rapid change and uncertainty. The book features 40 establishments across retail, services, community spaces and restaurants, with photography, poetry, and essays by Katherine Yungmee Kim, Lisa Kwon, Cathy Park and Dumbfoundead.

As of this writing, this class is already fully registered, but I had to make note of how awesome this sounds: How to Make Kimchi, hosted by API Forward Movement and Koreatown Youth and Community Center in Los Angeles. But wait, is this gonna be some legit Korean kimchi-making? Rest assured, just so you know that this is an authentic endeavor, the advertising makes clear that this class will be "TAUGHT BY KOREATOWN AUNTIES." Yes, real ajummas will be schooling you in the art, science and history of spicy fermentation.
It's happening Saturday, June 17 at Doulos Mission Church in Koreatown. Here are some more details:

K-TOWN'92 explores the untold stories of the L.A. Riots
Grace Lee's interactive documentary website and short film reveals new insights into the 1992 unrest.
K-TOWN'92 is an interactive documentary website and short film by Peabody Award winning filmmaker Grace Lee that reveals new insights into the 1992 Los Angeles riots through untold stories of diverse Angelenos in LA's ionic Koreatown, then and now. These are the stories that the media didn't know or didn't bother to tell. You can view K-TOWN'92 as a free-standing interactive documentary website.
A 15-minute companion documentary short, K-TOWN'92 Reporters, explores media coverage at the city's paper of record during the 1992 civil unrest. At that time, Hector Tobar, Tammerlin Drummond, and John Lee reported from the field for the Los Angeles Times. Twenty-five years later, they revisit their stories and impressions of those tumultuous events, and reflect on the media coverage they helped create.

83-year-old woman assaulted in Koreatown
Police say the attack is not being investigated as a hate crime.
In Los Angeles, an 83-year-old woman was assaulted on the street in Koreatown on Wednesday afternoon. The attack, which became the subject of a viral social media post, is reportedly not being investigated as a hate crime, despite initial claims that the assailant had yelled "white power" before running off.
No evidence that an assault on an elderly Korean woman, which went viral on Facebook, was racially motivated, police say
27-year-old Alexis Duvall, is accused of punching the elderly Asian woman in the back of her head, causing her to fall to the ground. The victim suffered a cut to her left cheek and scrapes to her knee. Duvall was arrested after a bystander chased and apprehended her, then called police to report the incident. The suspect gave her name as "Patty Garcia," but police say fingerprints identified her as Alexis Duvall.

Woman sues police for roughing her up in church parking lot
62-year-old Ok Jin Jun has filed a lawsuit against the LAPD, the city of Los Angeles and two police officers.
In Los Angeles, a 62-year-old woman has filed a lawsuit against police officers who she says roughed her up during an early morning encounter last month in a Koreatown church parking lot.

Ok Jin Jun is suing the Los Angeles Police Department, the city of Los Angeles and two police officers.
The altercation was captured on surveillance video. Footage shows an LAPD SUV following Mrs. Jun's car as she pulled into her church's parking lot for early morning prayer service on April 14. Mrs. Jun says the officers followed her after she honked her horn at them because they were blocking the church driveway.
But this was not a traffic stop, and Mrs. Jun was not being pulled over.

'Ktown Cowboys' hits theaters on March 18
Bro-mantic dramedy opens in limited release in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Virginia.
The boys are back. Ktown Cowboys, the cult hit webseries that became a feature film, hits theaters in limited release this week, opening Friday, March 18 in Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco and Fairfax, Virginia. The film will also be available for download on iTunes and other VOD platforms on March 25.
Directed by Daniel "DPD" Park and written by Danny Cho, the bro-mantic dramedy follows a group of ball-busting hard-partying friends wrestling with their evolution into adulthood. As their individual struggles come to light, the group of friends band together in Koreatown and through late nights at seedy after-hour soju bars, karaoke drinking girls and even a stint in jail, each emerges as a better version of himself.

Protect L.A.'s Koreatown

I'm on vacation! This week, I'm taking a much-needed break to recharge the batteries and get a change of scenery. To keep things going around here, I've enlisted the help of several friends of the blog to submit guest posts on various topics of their choosing. Here's one from tk lê, Angry Asian Intern.
I love Koreatown. From Far East Movement to Parker (aka Dumbfoundead) to Roy Choi and the entire cast of Ktown -- as many before me have said and shown, the neighborhood is filled with small businesses to satiate practically any of my child-of-immigrant cravings, and at any time of the day. The local mail store that opens before the post office does, the bar down the street that lets me bring my own mixers, and the endless fried and spicy things to cure all that ails me... Yes, I love Ktown for all these things.
I also love the community here. As one of the densest populations in all of Los Angeles, Ktown is filled with people. Workers who catch the bus before sunrise, God-fearers who worship with megaphones, gardeners who harvest fresh vegetables between brick and concrete. People -- mostly working class people of color -- exist here, they live and they thrive and they struggle. They play and they work and they party.
Ktown is not, as a developer named Mike Hakim has said, a community full of "rapists" and "pedophiles." (This is on public record. Go to the 11-minute mark.)

Man caught on video in Koreatown road rage fight
Police are asking for help identifying the driver who slammed another man's head into the sidewalk.
In Los Angeles, police are asking for the public's help in identifying a man who violently assaulted another man, slamming his head into the sidewalk during a road rage incident in Koreatown last May.

The LAPD has released video footage of the altercation, which left a man with a fractured skull. The incident happened on May 26 at the intersection of 4th Street and Ardmore Avenue in Koreatown.
The video shows two men squaring up to fight, occasionally throwing kicks and punches at each other while a bystander tries to break it up. The fight ends when the victim gets picked up and slammed into the pavement, hitting his head on the ground. The man then grabs the victim by the head and slams it into the sidewalk.

The 31st annual Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival, presented by Visual Communications, is going down April 23-30 in Little Tokyo, Koreatown and West Hollywood. It's one of my favorite events of the year, and you should party with me.
LAAPFF is the largest festival of its kind of Southern California, and is the premier showcase for the best and brightest of Asian American and Asian international cinema. This year's festival will present 134 films from over 20 countries with 32 features and 102 short films. Angry Asian Man is a proud media sponsor of the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival.
Here's some of the programming you can look forward to:

Steven Yeun and Conan Go to the Korean Spa
A painfully hilarious adventure of sweating, touching and nudity.
It was an adventure that could only happen in Koreatown. The Walking Dead star Steven Yeun recently accompanied Conan O'Brien to film a hilarious segment exploring the wondrous haven known as Wi Spa in Los Angeles. The Korean spa, baby! There was lots of sweating, lots of awkward touching, and lots of painful scouring of skin -- mostly while completely naked. Best of all, they made some new friends.

The Ktown Cowboys are back! Are you ready for the Ktown Cowboys movie? The boys return for another epic night of bad decisions and boozy debauchery in Koreatown, Los Angeles. Fans of the hit comedy webseries know that the gang has been hard at work on a feature film version set for release this year.
In the meantime, to raise awareness of the film, they're getting you prepped with a companion series of digital shorts called "Ktown Footnotes." The series acts as your guide into the world of Ktown Cowboys, reintroducing the fan-favorite castmembers of Ktown Cowboys and adding and interweaving some story beyond the film's plot.
New installments of "Ktown Footnotes" drop every Wednesday. Here are the episodes released thus far:

Heads up. Be careful out there. In Los Angeles, police are looking for a man suspected of viciously attacking and robbing four women in apartment elevators since November. All of the victims were Korean women.

In each robbery, the suspect followed the women into an apartment elevator, where he punched them and stole their purses. One victim was sexually battered and punched several times.

Far East Movement returns to their roots with 'K-Town Riot' EP
Globetrotting electro-rap group's new mini-album is dedicated to their Koreatown community.
It's been a minute, but Far East Movement is back. The Los Angeles electro-rap group has dropped its latest record K-Town Riot EP. And it kicks some ass. Definitely a harder sound than they're typically known for. Kev Nish, Prohgress, J-Splif and DJ Virman have dedicated this six-track mini-album to the city and community that made them who they are. According to FM, "We're proud to see how the community has grown and inspires us to grow as artists and people."

New Music: Electronic beats by KTown Shekki
Some cool new tunes for you... KTown Shekki is a new DJ and production crew hailing from Koreatown, Los Angeles. Emerging from a rising KTown electronic scene -- "using karaoke rooms as their studio, Casios swung over their shoulders" -- they're making remixes and mashing up pop hits with grinding electronic beats. Basically, hot stuff to dance to, if that's your thing. Here are some tracks:

Police seek Nissan GT-R driver in fatal Koreatown hit-and-run
Have you seen this car? In Los Angeles, police are searching for the driver of a distinctive Nissan GT-R who is responsible for the hit-and-run death of an elderly bicycle rider in Koreatown earlier this year: Distinctive Nissan GT-R Sought in Fatal Koreatown Hit-&-Run (VIDEO).
LAPD has released dash-cam video footage of the collision, shot from the next lane over, that killed 90-year-old Joo Yoon when he was hit by a dark gray or gun-metal Nissan GT-R while crossing a Koreatown intersection on April 27. The video shows the Nissan hitting Yoon, waiting for a moment on the next block, then driving off:

5th Annual Korean BBQ Festival, June 23
Hey, Los Angeles meat eaters. It's on. The Korean American Coalition, Los Angeles presents the 5th Annual Korean BBQ Festival, a fun showcase of some of the food from restaurants and vendors from all around Koreatown. Whether your thing is short ribs, pork skewers, bibimbap or all of the above, make some plans, bring a friend and come hungry. It's happening Sunday, June 23 during CicLAvia, adjacent to the Radio Korea building at 3700 Wilshire Blvd.
