Sulu is gay in 'Star Trek Beyond'

John Cho reveals a significant new detail about his iconic character's private life.

Sulu is gay in Star Trek Beyond and it's not a big deal. In the latest Star Trek movie, it is revealed that the USS Enterprise's helmsman, played by John Cho, is married and has a daughter with a same sex partner.

Okay, this is kind of a big deal, but I guess the movie is treating it like just another character detail about Hikaru Sulu's personal life in the forward-thinking future of Star Trek. We've already established that he's a badass and exceptionally good at his job. He's also a dad and married to a man.

The decision by director Justin Lin and screenwriter/co-star Simon Pegg to make Sulu gay was, of course, a nod to George Takei, who played the character in the original 1960s television series and beyond.

Who's hyped for the new Star Trek movie? For those clamoring to see John Cho back in action as Hikaru Sulu in Star Trek Beyond, here's a little taste. Star John Cho, who plays Hikaru Sulu, explains that Star Trek Beyond finds the Enterprise crew a couple of years into their mission -- and feeling kind of homesick. For Sulu, that means missing his baby daughter, whose photo sits on his console at the ship's helm. (Which is a little unprofessional, Cho admits.)

So Sulu has a kid daughter.

For Trekkies eagerly anticipating director Justin Lin's take on the final frontier, here's your first glimpse. Paramount just dropped the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond, with the veteran Fast & Furious director now helming the adventures of Kirk and Co. in the bigger and badder latest installment of the space adventure franchise. From the looks of things, the U.S.S. Enterprise is in pretty bad shape.

'To Be Takei' to debut on DirecTV

Mark your calendars. The feature film To Be Takei, director Jennifer M. Kroot's documentary about the love, life and career of actor/activist/icon George Takei, will premiere July 3 on DirecTV, where it will run exclusively through August 5. It will then be released theatrically and on all major video on demand outlets on August 22.

Oh my, moviegoers. I'm a little bummed that I can't attend the Sundance Film Festival this year. Maybe next time. One of the films I really wanted to see was the world premiere of To Be Takei, a feature documentary about Star Trek icon and human rights activist George Takei. Directed by Jennifer M. Kroot, the film follows George and his husband Brad on a star's profound trek for life, liberty and love.

Oh my. Coolest lunch buddies ever... Check out this fun photo, posted to Reddit, of UC Santa Cruz student Charlsie Chang flashing LLAP with the two Sulus, George Takei and John Cho. Double Sulu!

Charlsie won a lunch date with the senior and junior Star Trek actors as part of the University of California's "Promise for Education" scholarship fund campaign. Cho promised to take a randomly selected fan that contributed at least $25 to the fund to a special lunch, along with fellow UC alum George Takei.

That randomly selected fan was Charlsie. She won the Sulu lottery, and she lunched with them this week in Los Angeles. Pretty darn lucky, considering that Charlsie says, "I never win anything."

I'd say she won everything. Live long and prosper!

More evidence that George Takei is a badass -- now more than ever. What's his secret? Push-ups, apparently. Uncle George's daily badass regimen includes doing 100 pushups every morning. The still-spry 76-year-old Star Trek icon was a guest on Conan the other night and showed off his mad push-up skills. Behold:

Hell yes. Actor/activist/icon of awesome George Takei recently unveiled his very own cologne. I don't know how it smells, but its name alone is amazing: Eau My. Of course! There could be no other name.

Eau My's scent is described as "subtle and charming, with top notes of mandarin zest, Italian bergamot and fresh ozone transitioning to night-blooming jasmine, white freesia petals and grated ginger." I don't know what most of that means, but it sounds like the perfect scent for the sophisticated man or woman in your life.

I can't believe anyone would miss a single riveting minute of C-SPAN programming, but in case you looked away for a moment, here's Star Trek icon, civil rights activist and social media maestro George Takei speaking on LGBT issues at the National Press Club last week. In his address, he discusses the Supreme Court's rulings on the Defense of Marriage Act and his role as a leading internet influencer:
