Twenty-five Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Damn, I almost forgot. Happy Valentine's Day, to all who tolerate it. By coincidence, today also happens to be the anniversary of this blog. And it's not just any old Angryversary. On this day 25 years ago, I flipped the switch and launched the very first iteration of Angry Asian Man. I did not know what I was doing. There was no plan, and could not have known where this website would take me. But here we are, 25 years later.

Yeah, still here. It's true, I'm nowhere near as prolific as I was in my youth. (Man, you try doing this for 25 years.) Time, gravity, capitalism, metabolism have all taken their toll. Plus, you know, everything. I'm pretty damn tired. The blog fell into a slow slide into inactivity over the years (honestly, the pandemic really knocked me out), and I've shifted my energy to things like podcasting and other writing. But I've recently started posting on this blog again with small, regular updates, sharing links and items of note from Angry Asian America. I just missed being helpful in this way. So I'm going to try to keep that going. Hell, I might even start, yup, a newsletter.

So let me just thank everyone who's stuck with me. All of the folks who have supported my work on and off the blog. I've always said the best, most unexpected part about running this thing has been all of the incredible friends and collaborators it has put in my path, and continues to do so. Also, big thank you to everyone who has maintained their financial support of my endeavors over the years. Thank you to my family for being my foundation through all of it. And no thank you to the haters. Still not here for it.

Twenty-five years. We've done the math correctly, but it doesn't feel real. Well, anyway, Stay Angry.

Twenty-Three Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

What is time? Seriously, how is it that I'm writing they twenty-third annual version of this post?

Yes, good readers, today happens to be the 23rd anniversary of Angry Asian Man. On this day in 2001, just a few minutes past midnight, I fired up the file transfer protocol and uploaded the very first version of this blog, scotch-taped together with rickety HTML, early Internet energy, and the recklessness of youth. Good times.

At the start, I was just trying to carve out a little corner of the internet to express myself, back before I even knew this space would eventually be known as a blog. So I started writing, and we were off. And what do you know? We picked up a following along the way. And it's been a ride. We've had some wins, endured some heartache, and tried to start a conversation about community, identity, where we've been and where we're going.

And somehow... it's now been two decades and change. I say this every year, but I'm serious: I feel like I did the math wrong. 23. Not a nice, round, commemorative number. Just a number that says I've been doing this for a long-ass time. I've dedicated twenty-three years of my life and sweat and heart to this website. But I'm thankful that it's given me purpose. I'm thankful for the opportunity to contribute a small part to the Asian American conversation. And I most thankful for all the great people this space has brought into my life.

I'll be the first to admit that I've slowed down, and the actual blogging is not what it once was, as I've diverted a lot of attention to podcasting, publishing and other projects. Also: I'm tired. Twenty-three years later also means twenty-three years older. (Seriously, what is time?) But I'm still in it. We're keeping it going.

Thanks for being part of this journey. Stay Angry.

- Phil

Twenty-two Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

This one snuck up on me. Happy Valentine's Day, to all who celebrate. But by pure coincidence, today also happens to the be the anniversary of this website. Yes, on this day twenty-two years ago, just after midnight, I hit publish on the very first iteration of Angry Asian Man. Powered by some very rickety HTML code and a little bit of that dumb fearlessness of the new millennium internet era, I just started blogging. I didn't even know what I was doing was referred to as blogging. But that's how this journey began. Now 22 years and counting.

Of course, this website is not quite what it used to be, as the day-to-day blogging has scaled back significantly and my energy and attention have been diverted to other concerns. Health, money, family, and gravity (and a global pandemic) have all collected their cut of my 24 hours. But I've been keeping busy with other personal and professional projects, maintaining a voice on social media, and still devoted to this community called Asian America, no matter how many times it inflates and breaks my heart.

So this is the annual post. Another ring on the tree trunk and another opportunity to say thank you. Thank you to all the supporters, especially the ones who have been here since year one. Thank you to all the great friends this website has brought into my life; you are easily the best thing about this journey. Thank you to all the creators and collaborators; let's make more great stuff. And thank you to my partner in crime Joanna, who has held my hand on every step of this path.

Let's keep this going. There is more great stuff to come in year 23 and beyond.

Twenty-One Angry Years

Happy Angryversary

Here we are again.

Honestly, with everything going on these days, I almost forgot. But on this day in 2001, I started this website. I hit the upload button on the very first rickety-ass HTML iteration of what I would eventually learn was called a blog. I've been doing this damn thing for 21 years. Angry Asian Man is allowed in the bar.

Every year I write this post, I am more bewildered about this journey and how I got here. I know I say this pretty regularly, but when I started this blog, I had no idea I was starting something. And certainly not the "something" that would go on to define my personal and professional identity for the next two decades and beyond.

Other things have become clearer. Raising the issues, fighting for visibility and engaging in hard conversations about our Asian American identities and communities are not more relevant and vital right now -- they've always been relevant and vital. I'm tired, and I'm twenty-one years older, but my work is not done. Our work's not done.

That said, I have to acknowledge that, in terms of output, I'm not the blogger I once was. My attention, time and resources have been diverted in a lot of different directions that pull me away from posting here -- fun stuff, like podcasts and writing a book, but also general adult life concerns like the safety and well-being of loved ones, paying the billz, my own mental health, and the goddamn COVID-19.

Truthfully, there are just days that I feel overloaded and paralyzed.

But other thing I know for sure after twenty-one years, none of this would be possible without my community. The hands-down best thing about this whole endeavor are the people that it has put in my path. The partners, the collaborators, the challengers, the teachers, the listeners, the readers. On the most difficult days, you've had my back, and in our most joyous moments, the celebrations are sweeter because we got there together.

Thank you being on this journey with me. Twenty-one years. I'll take that drink.

Stay Angry.

They Call Us Bruce 121: They Call Us Angry Asian Man

Jeff Yang and Phil Yu present an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America.

What's up, podcast listeners? We've got another episode of our podcast They Call Us Bruce. (Almost) each week, my good friend, writer/columnist Jeff Yang and I host an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America, with a strong focus on media, entertainment and popular culture.

Happy Angryversary! In this episode, we take a moment to observe the 20th anniversary of this blog, Angry Asian Man. It's been a journey. I look back at the blog's beginnings, how I got here, and my unique view of Asian America over the last two decades.

2.14.2021

Twenty Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Hey, everybody! Phil here. Happy Lunar New Year. Happy Valentine's Day. And Happy Angryversary.

On this day, 20 years ago, I hit "publish" on the very first iteration of this website. I barely knew what I was doing, and I honestly didn't think anyone was going to read it, but this shiny new internet thing seemed wide open and free, so I decided to carve out a little space on it. I had no idea I was starting a thing. Two decades later, with a lot of hours and energy in between, I've found a community and a calling. That said, I've seen this day coming up on the horizon, and now that it's here, I don't know how to feel.

I feel bewildered. I know I say this every passing year, but I keep thinking I've done the math wrong. How could twenty years fly by like this? In some ways, I feel like I'm still back on my old noisy desktop monitor at the beginning of the millennium, sitting in my pajamas, coding clunky HTML. I've run this blog longer than I've done anything else. It has basically defined my adult life. In recent years, as personal and professional demands have pulled me in different directions, my time and resources have been diverted away more and more from actual blogging to podcasting, social media and other writing, but at least I can say I'm still here. But where's here?

I feel tired. Twenty years ago, I didn't know where we'd all be in 2021, but it sure as hell wasn't here. Running this blog has given me a unique vantage point. On some days, I marvel at the joys, struggles and progress of Asian America. On other days, it feels like quicksand, and I wonder if any of this is worth it. I don't have to recount what a crap collision of the time/space continuum the past year has been, or ongoing recent events that have shaken our community. It weighs heavy on the heart, I start doubting if any of this is making a difference, and I calculate the actual cost of flinging this laptop off my balcony. Also, I'm just physically tired. I need a nap.

But I also still feel hopeful. Over the years, I've seen too many heartbreaks and setbacks to count (some of them, my own) but I've also witnessed the best of our community. The people, ideas and movements that challenge and inspire me to keep this thing going. Sometimes it feels like the full-time job of being Asian American is simply convincing folks -- America, other Asians, myself -- that we exist. But Asian America is a project, and it's not yet finished. It's a work-in-progress, and it's worth it.

Most of all, I feel grateful. The last few years, I've been in the habit of asking myself "how did I get here?" The answer is you. I always say the best thing about starting Angry Asian Man has been the people it has placed in my life, friends and strangers alike. Thank you for being partners in this journey. Thank you to the loyal readers who gave me a voice and purpose. Thank you to financial backers for your faith. Thank you to colleagues and collaborators for creating something with me. Thank you to the educators, mentors and activists for lighting the way. Thank you to the ancestors for holding us on your shoulders. Special thanks to my family and loved ones who have always held my hand and had my back.

Thank you for the last twenty years. As always, stay angry.

Nineteen Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Hello! Phil here. We all know today, February 14, is Valentine's Day. But as longtime readers may remember, today also happens to mark the anniversary of this website. Yup. On this day, nineteen years ago, I flipped the switch on the very first iteration of Angry Asian Man, launching me into the wilds of the internet.

Nineteen years. Every year, I tell myself I must be doing the math wrong, but it checks out. I've done this thing longer than I've done anything. And I feel pretty fortunate. Because of this website, I've experienced so many joyous, wonderful moments and made blessed relationships. I've also witnessed some pretty terrible things, and have waded through a fair amount of truly unfun bullshit.

I've had wins. I've made mistakes. I'm tired. The last couple of years have been particularly challenging. But I'm still here. So... nineteen years later, all I can really say is thank you. Thanks to all you regular readers, whether you're relatively recent or been staying angry since day one. Thank you to all the great friends I've made along the way. Huge thank you to all the subscribers and supporters. Thanks but no thanks to the haters, too.

I never really expected this thing to connect with people, but somewhere along the way I found you, my community. I found a personal and professional calling. And I found my voice.

Next up: Year Twenty. In terms of this website, and its various satellite efforts, there will be some of the same stuff, as well as exciting new stuff. I've been messing with new formats, as well as navigating some big lifestyle changes. But rest assured, we're keeping things going. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Stay Angry.

Eighteen Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Hey, everybody! Phil here. Happy Valentine's Day, if that's your thing. Around here, coincidentally, the day is special for another reason. Today happens to mark the 18th anniversary of this blog. On this day in 2001, I turned the knobs and flipped the switch to upload the very rudimentary first version of Angry Asian Man.

18 years. Damn. This blog is legally an adult. Old enough to vote. Which also makes me old... and tired. Definitely tired. It's been wonderful, it's been inspiring, it's been appalling, it's been bewildering. It's been a hell of a journey that I never saw coming. When I first started working on this thing, I had no idea that I was starting a thing. And I certainly didn't think anybody was going to read it.

But here you are, so thank you. The very best thing about running this site has been all the awesome people it has put in my path, the dear friendships we've forged, and the community we've created together.

Thank you to the close confidants who have always had my back, the artists and change-makers who inspire me, and you, the dear readers who gave me a voice. It's an honor. Especially huge thank you to the supporters and subscribers who donate to Angry Asian Man, this month and every month. You keep this going.

No thank you to the haters.

On a personal note, the blog's 18th year was one of the most challenging years my own life, with some setbacks and disappointments, as well as wins and good news. I'm definitely not the same guy I was when we started this thing, 18 years ago. That said, I'm not going anywhere. Thanks for sticking around. Let's keep doing this together.

Stay Angry.

Seventeen Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Greetings, good readers of this website. Today is Valentine's Day, and I hope you observe or ignore it in whatever way you see fit. I just wanted to note that today, by complete coincidence, also happens to officially mark the 17th anniversary of Angry Asian Man. Seventeen! Pretty sure I did the math right.

On this day, seventeen years ago, I cranked the knob that launched the very first iteration of this blog, in all its rough, rudimentary splendor. I had no idea that it would become a "thing." I had no idea where it would take me. And I had no idea it would become my professional and personal calling. But here we are.

I do this little commemoration every year, and every year, I still shake my head and ask myself, how did I get here? The answer is you, the awesome circle of friends and followers that have rallied around this little blog, encouraged by passion and fueled this little project, day by day and post by post over the last seventeen years. This hustle is not easy, dear readers, but you've kept it going, and I'm grateful.

Sixteen Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Hello, good readers, supporters and friends of this website. Where does the time go? Today marks the 16th anniversary of Angry Asian Man. Believe it or not, sixteen years ago on this day, I flipped the switch and uploaded the very first iteration of this blog. It wasn't much to look at it, and I had no idea where would take me, but it set me on a personal and professional path that changed my life. And I am grateful.

So, on today of all days, I thank you for your continued support over the last sixteen years. Thank you to regular visitors who read and share this content every day. You're the best, and you're the reason why this thing is still going strong. Thank you to the immediate and extended community that has coalesced around this project over a decade and a half. You're the best damn thing about running this endeavor. And no thank you to the haters, who have been around since day one. But keep it coming -- I'm not going anywhere.

One last thing: I'd be remiss if I didn't take this opportunity to remind folks about the 2017 Stay Angry Subscriber Drive. If you're a fan, friend, and/or believer of this blog, this is great way to support our ongoing operations, and get a super-cool, exclusive limited edition t-shirt too. Learn more here.

Fifteen Angry Years

Happy Angryversary.

Happy Valentine's Day, however you observe it. Today, by complete coincidence, happens to mark the 15th anniversary of Angry Asian Man. Fifteen years ago on this date, I tapped out some rudimentary HTML code and uploaded the very first iteration of this website on to the world wide web. I barely knew what I was doing, and sure as hell didn't think anybody was going to read it. I had no idea where this thing would take me.

But here we are, fifteen years later. So some thanks are definitely in order.

2015 Angryversary Art Roundup

Thank you to all the artists who helped celebrate this blog's anniversary.

Last month, we commemorated this blog's 14th anniversary. To celebrate, I invited artists to submit their own interpretation of the Angry Asian Man banner art. I received an incredible response with some really fun and wonderful pieces. Throughout the month of February, we showcased a variety of work from award-winning artists to up-and-coming design students, to fans who just wanted to flex a little creativity.

Big thanks to all the folks who participated and submitted artwork. You rock. In case you missed them, here's a recap of all the artists and their banners than ran last month.

Fourteen Angry Years

It's this blog's birthday.

Good readers, today officially marks the anniversary of Angry Asian Man.

Fourteen years ago today, I pulled some knobs and hit return to upload the very first version of this blog. I didn't even know what I was doing was referred to as "blogging." I wasn't sure anyone would read it, and I sure as hell didn't think I'd have a following. But here we are fourteen years later. I've been working on this thing longer than I've worked on anything in my entire life. I wouldn't be here without you, my awesome readers.

Thank you. Thank you to everyone who has contributed a helpful link or a tip, or has sent a note of encouragement, or even crappy message of hate. You've fueled the fire that has kept me busting my ass to make this happen, year after year. Thank you to true community, both online and off, and all of the incredible relationships I've been able to forge along the way -- you are the best part of this whole thing.

Thank you to all of you readers, listeners, viewers, contributors, donors, collaborators, sharers, likers, retweeters, high-fivers, huggers, gift-givers and lovers. Thank you to everyone who's bought me a drink or shared a meal. Thank you to all who have shown kindness and support when I needed it, and even a little butt-kicking when I needed that too. Thank you to my family, who have shown me endless patience.

Fourteen years. I keep thinking I've done the math wrong -- I say this every year -- but that's what we've got. There are some big plans and changes coming up. I hope you'll stick with me into year fifteen. Stay Angry.

Call for Submissions: Angryversary Banner Art

Submit your interpretation of the Angry Asian Man banner/logo to be featured during the month of February.

Hello, good readers! Calling all artists, illustrators, designers, doodlers and other folks of creative inclination. Next month marks another anniversary of this blog. Last year, to celebrate, we conducted a month-long Angryversary Art project, and it was a rousing success. So we're doing it again.

I've invited a handful of artists friends to submit their interpretations of the "Angry Asian Man" banner that sits up at the top of this website. So, every day next month, there will be a different artist's rendition of the banner.

But I need your help. In addition to the artists I've enlisted, I need more banners to fill in the rest of February's 28 days. So how about it? I know there are more than a few artistically talented readers out there. I invite you to submit your own Angryversary banner art, to be showcased at the top of this website.

Here are some specifications:

Last month, we commemorated this blog's 13th anniversary. To celebrate, I invited artists to submit their own interpretation of the Angry Asian Man banner art. The response I received was overwhelming and wonderful. Each day in February, for all 28 days, we were able to showcase a different artist's work, from award-winning cartoonists to design students, bored folks just messing around and everything in between.

A huge thank you to everyone who submitted artwork. This was so much fun, and I hope to do it again next year. In case you missed them, here's a recap of all the artists and their banners that ran last month.

Thirteen Angry Years

This blog finally becomes an Angry Asian teenager.

Hey, everybody. Just wanted to take a moment to say thank you. Today marks the official anniversary of this blog. Believe it or not, thirteen years ago today, I cranked some levers and flipped the switch to launch the very first iteration of Angry Asian Man. With each passing year, I keep thinking I did the math wrong, but my calculations are correct. It is true. Somehow, I've been doing this darn thing for 13 years.

It's been incredible. When I first started it, I didn't even know what I was doing was referred to as "blogging." Nobody had tipped me off to that term yet. I barely knew what I was doing and I sure as hell didn't expect anyone to read it. But slowly, over many years, this site has become a significant destination for a lot of people. I've found a voice and a space and a calling, in a way I never could have anticipated.

So thank you.

Twelve Angry Years

Happy Valentine's Day, whatever it means to you. By complete coincidence, today also happens to mark the 12-year anniversary of this website, Angry Asian Man. No joke. Twelve years ago today, I flipped the switch, and the very first iteration of this blog went live on the internets. I didn't expect anyone to read it, and definitely didn't imagine I'd still be running it all these years later, but here we are.

Damn, I've been doing this for a dozen years. I think I say this every year, but I can't shake the feeling that I did the math wrong. Nope. February 2001. That's twelve freaking years.

Over the years, we've seen a lot of crazy angry things, some wonderful moments, some heartbreaks. I've had to shovel through a lot of crap -- a lot of the same crap over and over again -- and running this thing ain't easy, but twelve years later, I can say it's one of the most rewarding things I've ever done. I'm proud of this blog, and I couldn't have done it without all of you awesome angry readers.

So this is where I thank you. Thanks to everyone who sent in links, tips and all sorts of helpful information my way over the years. Thank you to everyone who has sent messages of strength and support. Thank you the great friends and amazing relationships this blog has brought into my life. Thank you to all the people who get angry, and fight everyday for our community. And thank you to the haters -- you fuel my fire.

Happy Angryversary, everybody. Let's keep this going together. Stay Angry.
