"Ching Chang Chong": Piers Morgan Mocks Chinese on Live TV

Things to Know From Angry Asian America

Piers Morgan's response to royal's Chinese ad sparks outcry
Hey look! It's Piers Morgan being a racist asshole on live TV! The Good Morning Britain host was talking about Peter Phillips (I just learned that this is Queen Elizabeth's grandson) starring in a Chinese commercial for Jersey Fresh Milk, when he mocked the ad's Mandarin voiceover, saying -- you guessed it! -- "ching chong chang," or something to that effect. Just couldn't help himself with that shit. I'm just surprised he didn't pull his eyes back.

"I'm plus-sized and Asian..." A Comic by Tenzing Lhamo Dorjee
"I'm so grateful to be living during the body-positive movement. I follow a ton of plus-sized women on social media. Any time I want a pick-me-up, I can look to them for inspiration. Some days, I look at myself in the mirror and wink at myself and say, 'Dang, you look good."=' There are times when people tell me: 'You're perfect sized!' 'You don't look fat!' 'Stop worrying!' This is sometimes hard to accept, having grown up in an Asian community."

'Kung Fu' Movie Remake Set At Universal
Universal Pictures has optioned the rights to the 1972 TV series Kung Fu for a contemporary-set action movie that will be directed by David Leitch, the co-director of John Wick and director of Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw, Deadpool 2 and Atomic Blonde. The original Kung Fu infamously starred David Carradine, who is not Asian, as a Chinese martial arts master. Legend has it, the show was conceived by Bruce Lee, who didn't get the role because the network believed America wasn't quite ready to see an Oriental man star in his own TV show. Here's my question: is anybody really clamoring for a Kung Fu remake?

Michigan legislator apologizes for calling Asian American opponent racial slurs

State Rep. Bettie Cook Scott referred to state Rep. Stephanie Chang as "ching-chong."

In Michigan, amid mounting backlash, a state legislator has apologized for "disparaging remarks" -- for the record, she means racial slurs -- that she made against an Asian American opponent for state Senate.

Detroit Rep. Bettie Cook Scott on Asian opponent: 'Don't vote for the ching-chong!'

During a recent Democratic primary, Michigan state Rep. Bettie Cook Scott reportedly referred to her opponent, state Rep. Stephanie Chang, as "ching chong," and called members of Chang's staff "ching chongs."

"Vote for me. Don't vote for the ching-chang!" witnesses overheard Scott telling voters during the August 7 primary election for District 1. She also reportedly called Chang's campaign volunteers "ching-chongs," saying "I called them ching-chongs. That's what they are!"

Well, that's just some good, old-fashioned racist schoolyard name-calling. But wait, there's more.

At an earlier campaign stop, Scott called one of Chang's campaign volunteers an "immigrant," saying "you don't belong here" and "I want you out of my country." Later, she was overheard telling a voter "these immigrants from China are coming over and taking our community from us." Further, she said it "disgusts" her "seeing Black people holding signs for these Asians and not supporting their own people."

When all else fails, racism and xenophobia are a tried and true political strategy.

Restaurant calls customer "Ching Chong" on receipt

Manhattan's Cornerstone Cafe apologizes after racial receipt goes viral.

This again. It's the return of the Racial Receipt! The latest sighting occurred in New York, where a Manhattan restaurant recently apologized for referring to an Asian American customer as "Ching Chong" on a receipt.

Last Wednesday, a server at Cornerstone Cafe in the East Village entered an Asian customer's name as "Ching Chong" on the slip for a to-go order of steak and eggs. Because why bother asking for a customer's actual name when you can silently mock them with a racial slur, right under their nose?

The incident started picking up attention when a friend of the customer, Facebook user Ziggy Chau, posted a photo of the offending receipt on social media. That's when the internet went in on Cornerstone Cafe.

"I just take no racism. Get that shit out of my face."

Philadelphia restaurateur Han Chieng suffers broken ankle in sidewalk fight with drunken racists.

A Philadelphia restaurateur suffered a broken ankle after getting into a sidewalk fight with several drunk individuals -- a fight that he says started when one of them shouted "ching chong wong" at him.

Han Dynasty owner breaks ankle in sidewalk fight: 'I just take no racism'

Han Chiang, owner of Han Dynasty in Old City, says he and several employees were outside on a cigarette break Thursday night when they encountered a group that had apparently just been kicked out of 2nd Story Brewing, the pub next door. Chiang and his colleagues were about to go back inside when one of the group yelled something to the effect of "ching chong wong" at them. Chiang called him on it.

"I turned around and said, 'Fuck you, you racist motherfucker,'" Chiang said in a phone interview with Billy Penn. "The guy denied saying it, then his friend Ian jumped in and hit me with a skateboard." Then it was on.

The fight escalated, with multiple people joining in, and Chiang getting his ankle broken in the fracas. At some point, the fight was broken up, and Chiang was hospitalized. But not before skateboard guy and the gang yelled "Fuck you, you Chinese faggots!" as they made their getaway.

Later, Ian Carroll, the guy who apparently hit Chiang with the skateboard, posted a note to Han Dynasty's Facebook page, preemptively recounting his version of the altercation, alleging that it was the Han Dynasty employees who started the fight when they tried to jump him and his friends.

Atlanta restaurant employee fired for using racial slur

Hostess at Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q was overheard chanting "ching chong" before seating Asian American diners.

Would you care for some racial slurs with your meal? In Atlanta, a hostess at a popular barbecue restaurant has been fired for singing "ching chong ching chong" just before seating a group of Asian American diners.

Atlanta's Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q Fires Employee for Using Racial Slurs

During a recent visit to Fox Bros. Bar-B-Q, one of the most popular restaurants in Atlanta, writer Steph Cha says she overheard the hostess walking behind her table while chanting "ching chong ching chong" with a sing-song voice, in the manner that one might chant "ding dong dong dong." Cha took to Yelp to air her complaint about the incident.

FedEx employee refers to package recipient as "Ching Chong"

Sorry, nobody here by that name. Also, you ought to be fired.

Not this again. Got word passed along to me about a recent racist incident involving a FedEx employee... In northern Virginia, a FedEx employee left a doortag regarding a package delivery to the residence of an Asian customer. In the space denoting the recipient's name, the delivery man wrote "Ching Chong Lee."

Oh, hell no.

Diana L., whose parents received the doortag, contacted customer service to inquire about the name on the package, and how exactly this happened. During the course of this attempted delivery, "Chang" somehow became "Ching Chong" -- a familiar racial slur we all know and love. This was not somebody's honest mistake.

Customer sues CVS for "Ching Chong Lee" on racist receipt

I'm sure somebody thought they were being clever. That somebody needs to get fired.

Oh hell no. Not this again. The latest edition of Racist Receipts comes from New Jersey... And Asian American woman is suing a CVS Pharmacy, where an employee referred to her with a racial slur -- "Ching Chong Lee" -- on her receipt: N.J. woman sues CVS for $1M, saying worker used Asian slur on her receipt.

Hyun Lee was picking up photos being developed at a CVS in Egg Harbor City, when she noticed the racial slur on her receipt. Yes, "ching chong" is a racial slur. Ms. Lee's actual f$%king name was apparently too difficult to type in, so the employee took it upon themselves to use something more convenient.

Chick-fil-A cashier names customers "Ching" and "Chong"

UC Irvine students find racial slurs on their fast food receipts.

Several folks have sent this my way... If you need more reason not to like Chick-fil-A, check out this Tumblr post about some UC Irvine students' -- who happen to be Asian -- recent visit to the fast food chain.

Take a good look at those receipts. The cashier, identified as "Lia," did not ask for their names when she took their orders, but apparently took it upon herself to provide these Asian customers with names of her own invention:

Justin Lin had a racist encounter with Tom Arnold at Sundance

Yes, that was "Tom F--cking Arnold" making "ching chong" noises at the cast and crew of 'Finishing the Game.'

Now that the dust (or snow) from Park City's Sundance and Slamdance Film Festivals has settled, Jeff Yang's latest "Asian Pop" column talks with the filmmakers behind some of this year's high-profile Asian American indie films, including American Zombie's Grace Lee, Dark Matter and Year of the Fish's Janet Yang and Finishing the Game's Justin Lin.

My favorite part is the very end, where Justin Lin recounts that he almost got into a fight with Tom Arnold, who apparently made "ching chong" noises at him and the cast and crew of Finishing the Game during a photo shoot -- a reminder that there are still some major obstacles (ya know, racism) for Asian American filmmakers.

"You know, I'm walking down the street in Park City, and people think, 'Oh, it's just some Asian dude,' and they ignore me," says Lin. "But if someone points me out and says my name, they act differently. It is what it is. I was doing a photo shoot with the cast of the movie, and some idiot was being really obnoxious in the background, making ching-chong noises. I was like, 'Who the f-- is that?' And I looked over and said, 'Damn, that's Tom Arnold. I'm not going to take that. I'm going after him.' So I almost got into this huge fight with Tom f--ing Arnold. At the end of the day, it's still a struggle. It's still the same struggle."

Moral of the story? You can think you've "made it" as an Asian American filmmaker in Hollywood, but there's always going to be some racist ass making "ching chong" noises in the background.
