Last week, indie rock band Florence + the Machine played a concert at the Austin 360 Amphitheatre, but their most important gig was a private show they played for one of their biggest fans -- a local teen in hospice.

Several heartwarming viral videos show singer Florence Welch playing a personal bedside concert for a 15-year-old cancer patient Karinya Chen at Hospice Austin's Christopher House. The two are singing "Shake It Out" and "Dog Days Are Over" as duets, with Welch complimenting Karinya's harmonizing

Karinya had tickets to see Florence + the Machine on Thursday night, but had to cancel her plans when her health declined. That's when hospice staffers reached out the band, who were happy to pay a visit.

If you're in Los Angeles, you're invited to see one of my favorite bands, Run River North, as part of the free outdoor concert series Grand Performances. Come to downtown LA and enjoy the band's wild and warm indie folk sound. It's happening Friday, June 26 at Grand Performances at 350 South Grand Avenue. It looks they're doing a lunchtime show at noon, and then another show in the evening (with The Family Crest) at 8:00pm.

The Serve the People Institute (SPI) is a community-driven organization that aims to share the stories of the Asian American Movement in Los Angeles. On Sunday, November 16, SPI presents "Voices from the Movement: Then, Now and Forever," a fall concert fundraiser featuring musician Charlie Chin and spoken word artist Jumakae. It's all going down at the Tateuchi Democracy Forum.

You all know that I adore singer/songwriter Priscilla Ahn. And I've been enjoying the heck out of her latest album, This Is Where We Are, which has been out for a few months. This time around, she's infused her ethereal vocals and sweet folk-pop melodies with a supercool electro-pop sound. I love it.

Dawen's West Coast Tour

Our old friend Dawen, one of the smoothest singers I know, has been holding it down in Taiwan and is pretty much on his way to becoming a full-fledged pop star. No joke, he's making music videos in the rain and performing on TV and playing to screaming fans in arenas and stuff. Our boy Dawen!

But before we completely lose him to the pop stratosphere, he's returning to the United States this month for a four-city West Coast Tour, opening for Canadian artist Wanting. The tour kicks off next week at the House of Blues in Los Angeles:

'aka DAN' Documentary Screening & 'Stuntman' Album Premiere

My friend Dan has one hell of a story to tell. If you're in Los Angeles, it is my honor and pleasure to invite you to the world premiere party for the documentary series aka DAN and the companion hip hop album Stuntman, chronicling adoptee musician Dan Matthews' amazing journey to find and reunite with his Korean birth family.

Perhaps you followed along with the unfolding saga last summer when Dan launched a Kickstarter campaign to help fund this documentary/album project, which would follow his trip to Korea, where he would meet his biological family -- including the twin brother he never knew he had -- for the first time. Crazy! And all of it became a documentary series, aka DAN, as well as a full-length music album inspired by his experiences.

The party will feature a screening of the documentary -- I'll be hosting the Q&A afterwards -- and performances by DANakaDAN, Priska, Chucky Kim, Abraham Kim, Sam Kang, Paul Dateh, Travis Graham, and much more. Some awesome musicians are getting together to put on a relief benefit show for victims of Typhoon Haiyan. LA Loves The Philippines features a lineup of some pretty awesome Asian American artists such as Bahwee, June Marieezy, Low Leaf, Spazzkid and more. A benefit concert for music education at Castelar Elementary School



The poster alone makes this event worth posting. If you're in Los Angeles, check it... Save Music in Chinatown is the first in a series of fundraising concerts organized to pay for music education at Castelar Elementary School, located right in the middle of Chinatown. This event for local kids and community will feature sets by Bob Forrest, Lucky Dragons, Deradoorian and LA Fog, plus a raffle.
