Fund This: The Princess Who Saved Her Friends

The children's book sequel from Greg Pak, Joanathan Coulton and Takeshi Miyazawa.

The Princess Who Saved Her Friends is the latest children's book written by comics writer Greg Pak and internet superstar musician Jonathan Coulton, and illustrated by artist Takeshi Miyazawa. The sequel to 2015's The Princess Who Saved Herself, the book is currently winding down a successful Kickstarter campaign.

Featuring the same creative team, the original book was a story of determination, bravery, and understanding, starring a scrappy kid who stuck up for herself but was always able to open the circle and find reconciliation with the monsters and witch she came into conflict with.

But what happens next, when our heroine discovers that the witch befriended might not be such a good friend after all? The Princess Who Saved Her Friends tackles the kind of tricky personal conflict that kids -- and adults -- grapple with every day in the real world.

Jeff Yang and Phil Yu present an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America.

What's up, podcast listeners? We've got another episode of our podcast They Call Us Bruce. Each week, my good friend, writer/columnist Jeff Yang and I host an unfiltered conversation about what's happening in Asian America, with a strong focus on media, entertainment and popular culture.

This week, we geeked out and welcomed our good friends, acclaimed comic book creators Gene Luen Yang and Greg Pak, who talked about diversity in comics, new takes on iconic characters, and who would win in a fight: Asian Hulk or Asian Superman?

Marvel's Asian American superheroes team up... for karaoke?

Totally Awesome Hulk #15 is Marvel's most unapologetically Asian American comic book issue of all time.

This is a dire situation that needs the attention of Marvel Comics' greatest Asian American superheroes! Amadeus Cho -- aka The Totally Awesome Hulk -- Ms. Marvel, Silk, Shang Chi, Jimmy Woo and Jake Oh have answered the call to action and assembled... at a bone marrow donor registration drive?

That's the opening scene of Totally Awesome Hulk #15, which is not only totally awesome, but quite possibly the most unapologetically Asian American issue of a comic book that Marvel Comics has ever published.

Starting with that bone marrow donor drive. As you may know, ethnicity matters when searching for a life-saving bone marrow match, and unfortunately, Asian Americans are seriously underrepresented on the National Marrow Donor Registry. And now you know. You can thank writer Greg Pak for that.

Marvel's Most Epic Asian American Superhero Team-Up Ever

Greg Pak assembles Amadeus Cho, Ms. Marvel, Shang Chi, Silk and more in Totally Awesome Hulk #15.

Ms. Marvel! Shang Chi! Silk! Amadeus Cho! Has there ever been such an awesome assemblage of Asian American superheroes under the banner of Marvel Comics? Possibly probably not... until now.

Writer Greg Pak recently teased the upcoming cover of Totally Awesome Hulk #15, suggesting that this is the most significant grouping of Asian American superheroes that has ever starred in a mainstream comic book.

In Totally Awesome Hulk #15, kid genius Amadeus Cho -- aka The Hulk -- is slowly learning how to become a team player, but has to learn fast when Ms. Marvel, Shang Chi, Silk and a host of other heroes come to town.

Wings, Guns and Magic! Preview Greg Pak's KINGSWAY WEST #2

Guest Post by Greg Pak

I grew up as a biracial Korean American kid in Texas who always loved Westerns. So when I learned about the actual history of the Chinese in the Old West, my head popped off, and for over two decades, I've been obsessed with writing a story about a Chinese gunslinger in the Old West.

Last Wednesday, my dreams came true when the first issue of my Dark Horse comic book series Kingsway West hit stores. Kingsway West tells the story of a Chinese gunslinger searching for his wife in an Old West overrun with magic, and I've been pretty much blown away by the response of readers and reviewers. I'm particularly grateful to Angry Asian Man and all the readers right here on this blog who supported the book from the minute it was announced way back in July 2015. So I'm thrilled to bring you a six page lettered preview of issue #2, written by yours truly, drawn by the great Mirko Colak, colored by the brilliant Wil Quintana, and lettered by the awesome Simon Bowland!

Kingsway West #1 is in comic stores right now -- pick it up at your local shop or buy it digitally at Comixology. Kingsway West #2 comes out on September 21 -- please feel free to ask your local shop to hold a copy for you!

Greg Pak's 'Kingsway West' comic book has a soundtrack

Listen to Goh Nakamura's "Sonia," inspired by Greg Pak's tale of a Chinese gunslinger in the Old West.

Kingsway West, writer Greg Pak's upcoming Dark Horse comic book series with artist Mirko Colak, is about a Chinese gunslinger searching for his wife in an Old West overrun by magic.

As part of the book's launch, Greg has enlisted the help of a few of my favorite Asian American musicians, Goh Nakamura, Jane Lui and Adam Warrock, to create songs based on the characters and story. Greg, who says he always has an imaginary soundtrack running through his head as he writes comics, thought Kingsway West would lend itself particularly well to the soundtrack treatment.

"Music is almost completely emotional, and Westerns tend to be stories with big emotions," says Greg. "So there are grand traditions of soaring anthems, heroic themes, and deeply romantic ballads associated with movie Westerns. I love the way Goh, Adam, and Jane have tapped into those traditions but totally made them their own."

We're pleased to present the debut of "Sonia" by our old pal award-winning singer/songwriter Goh Nakamura. The song is inspired our hero, Kingsway Law, and the epic search across the west for his lost love Sonia.

Fund This: Code Monkey Save World

Hey, fellow geeks! Just want to make sure you knew about Code Monkey Save World, winding down the final hours of its Kickstarter campaign. The project is a graphic novel collaboration based on the songs of popular internet singer-songwriter Jonathan Coulton, written by our friend Greg Pak, and drawn by Takeshi Miyazawa. It's already successfully met its fundraising goal many times over, so this is your chance to get in on this.

Code Monkey Save World got started when Greg sent a tweet to his old college friend Jonathan Coulton about writing a supervillain team-up comic based characters from his music. They crafted the tale of Code Monkey, the put-upon coding monkey from the eponymous Coulton song, as he teams up with the lovelorn supervillain from Coulton's song "Skullcrusher Mountain." They have adventures.
