Squid Game: The Official Podcast - Gganbu Gone Wrong - Rewatch S1 Eps 4-6

Get back in the game.

Fellow Squid Game fans! I'm excited to share that I'm the host of Squid Game: The Official Podcast, from Netflix and Mash-Up Americans. Each episode, join me and some special guests as we suit up and re-live the first season of the international phenomenon, and get you good and hyped for Season 2, which will premiere later this year. We hope to be the perfect companion to your season one re-watch.

In our latest episode, "Gganbu Gone Wrong," I'm joined by iconic comedian and actor Margaret Cho. We break down episodes 4,5 and 6 of Squid Game, taking a deep dive into the brutal tug-of-war game, the heart-wrenching marbles showdown, and the dark twists of organ trafficking, all while exploring deeper themes of Korean culture. Plus, we talk to an actual professional mortician to shed light on the grisly reality of organ harvesting. Also, a call with my mom.

These Republicans are lousy at choosing their token Asians

Arizona GOP website displays family from Margaret Cho sitcom to represent Asian American interests.

It looks like Arizona Republicans are hard up for some Asian friends. In a spectacularly awful attempt to illustrate its diversity and support for Asian Americans, the Arizona Republican Party's official website prominently displayed a photo of a smiling Asian American family. Here's the problem: the family is fake. In fact, it's a cast photo of the fictional Kim family from Margaret Cho's short-lived 1994 sitcom All-American Girl.

Arizona GOP uses Margaret Cho sitcom pic to represent Asian Americans

For you young ones out there, decades before Fresh Off The Boat, ABC aired the very first sitcom featuring a Korean American family, starring rising standup comedian Margaret Cho. It made some waves, but for the most part it was not well received and was promptly canceled after a season. You heard it mentioned a lot in the hoopla as a predecessor to Fresh Off The Boat when that show hit the air a couple of years ago.

But it's pretty apparent that the show didn't have any fans among the Arizona GOP. Or they would have found a nonfictional or at least less recognizable Asian family to use as their token minorities.

Oh Hell No: Yellowface in the 'Absolutely Fabulous' movie

White actress Janette Tough plays a Japanese character named "Huki Muki."

Oh hell no. The year is 20-f*cking-15. Is there any legit reason for a movie to put a performer in yellowface? No. That shit is racist. But that's what the upcoming Absolutely Fabulous movie is doing. They've got a white actor playing an Asian character -- makeup and everything. Who thought this was a good idea?

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie under fire for casting Janette Tough as Japanese fashion designer

The big-screen adaptation of Ab Fab, based on the popular British sitcom, feature Scottish comedian Janette Tough in a cameo as a fictional male Japanese fashion designer called "Huki Muki." The character's appearance and styling appear to be inspired by the look of real-life Japanese artist and writer Yayoi Kusama.

This is yellowface, straight up. White actor playing an Asian person. It's a fairly simple, racist concept.

The casting has drawn the ire of comedian/actress Margaret Cho, who professes to be an Ab Fab fan, but is definitely not down with the racist mockery happening in this movie.

She took to Twitter to put that shit on blast:

Margaret Cho is returning to television! The comedian/actress will star as a version of herself in the hourlong marijuana-themed family dramedy Highland, which is in development for Amazon Prime.

Margaret Cho to Star in Pot Comedy for Amazon

In Highland, after a court ordered rehab, Cho gets a chance to start over but has to move in with her dysfunctional family who now runs a pot dispensary. Sounds like fun for the whole family!

Margaret Cho to play Ken Jeong's sister on 'Dr. Ken'

Comedian will guest star on the new ABC comedy as Ken's famous and successful sister.

Well, that's kind of perfect. Comedian Margaret Cho will guest star as Ken Jeong's sister on an upcoming episode of the new ABC comedy Dr. Ken. I can't think of anyone more appropriate for the role.

'Dr. Ken' Casting Scoop: Margaret Cho to Play Ken Jeong's Sister

Dr. Ken is inspired by Jeong's own experiences as a real-life doctor. He stars as Ken Park, a brilliant but frustrated HMO doctor juggling medicine, marriage and parenting -- succeeding at none of them.

In 1994, Cho made history starring in her own short-lived ABC comedy All-American Girl, the first network sitcom centered around an Asian American family. It only lasted a season, and it would take another two decades before we saw another Asian American family hit prime time. But let us recognize a trailblazer.

So it's rather fitting that Margaret will playing Ken's awesome, more accomplished sibling.

Margaret Cho mocks North Korea at the Golden Globes

Well, that was rather uncomfortable.

So... did you catch the Golden Globe Awards? Hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association's annual bash was the usual mostly white, self-congratulatory celebrity affair... punctuated by a rather uncomfortable recurring bit involving Margaret Cho as a North Korean official.

Golden Globes: Amy Poehler, Tina Fey, Margaret Cho Joke About Sony Hack

There were going to be jokes about North Korea. The controversy around The Interview and the fallout from the Sony hacking scandal were the biggest Hollywood stories of the year. They couldn't not joke about it. Among other jabs, the hosts joked that they were gathered to honor "all of the movies that North Korea was okay with."

They also took a moment to introduce North Korean journalist Cho Yun Ja -- played by a solemn, over-powdered Margaret Cho -- contributor for Movies Wow! magazine, and the newest member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who took her moment get a photo with the venerable Meryl Streep.
