Badass store owner fights off robber... with bananas

He messed with the wrong lady and her fruit.

File under badass... and bananas. This one comes to us from Canada, where a Mississauga convenience store owner fought off a would-be robber with a bunch of bananas.

Mississauga store owner fights off robber with bananas, video shows

69-year-old Seungae Kim was behind the counter at A&J Convenience, the store she owns and operates with her husband, on Saturday night when a masked man came in and demanded she open the cash register.

She refused. When the man got up on to the counter, Kim and her husband sprung into action. She grabbed the closest thing in reach -- a big bunch of bananas -- are started swinging. And kept swinging.

"Then he jumped up to the counter. My husband pushed him down," Kim told CP24. "Then I was scared my husband was going to be hurt, so I got the bananas and started to hit him so hard and he ran away."

The incident was caught on the store's surveillance video, which shows Kim fighting off the suspect, who fled on foot empty-handed -- but not before she flung the fruit at him as he ran away.

Welcome to The Chloe Kim Show

17-year-old snowboarder wins gold in the Olympic women's halfpipe.

As was foretold in the ancient texts, Chloe Kim fulfilled her destiny as snowboarding's golden girl, wowing the world, 1080ing into our hearts and snatching a gold medal from the sky. Everyone expected it, but still, nobody was ready. On Tuesday morning in PyeongChang, the 17-year-old snowboarder from Southern California, all smiles, won gold in the women's halfpipe. And she made it look easy.

Her first run set an extremely high bar, landing a backside air, frontside 1080, cab 720, frontside 900, McTwist and frontside inverted 720. (I have no idea what exactly these terms mean -- I just know they variously allude to awesome high-flying flippy things.) That run earned her a top score of 93.75, giving her a huge lead over the rest of the field... and eventually, the gold medal -- we just didn't quite know it yet.

File Under Badass: Four women fight off restaurant robber

"I just told the other girls to just hurt him and I'll hold the register."

This robber messed with the wrong restaurant -- a restaurant staffed with some badass ladies.

Earlier this month, a man attempting to rob the cash register at Tony's Breakfast in Northeast Washington was met with the full fury of four employees who smacked, slapped and thwacked the crap out of him.

Four women fought off a robber at a restaurant. 'You guys are crazy,' police told them.

On the morning of November 7, manager Justine Choe opened the cash register to make change for a customer, when a man suddenly lunged across the counter and made a grab for a cash drawer.

But Justine, whose parents own the restaurant, was not letting go without a fight. And this dude definitely got a fight. A crazy five-person tug-of-war ensued as three more of the restaurant's employees jumped into the fray.

Badass mother shields kids, survives shooting rampage

Tiffany Phommathep was shot five times, then drove herself to get help.

By now, you've heard about the California man who went on a violent shooting rampage Tuesday, killing five and wounding twelve others in Tehama County, before he was killed in a shootout with police.

Kevin Janson Neal killed his wife and hid her body in a hole he cut in the floor of his trailer house. He then murdered four other people during a 25-minute tear through the rural community that ended with a shooting at Rancho Tehama Elementary School. An additional six adults and six children were wounded.

But did you hear about the woman who was shot five times, using her body to shield her kids -- and lived?

She thought the robber's gun was fake. It wasn't.

Fearless Virginia restaurant owner fights off armed robber with her bare hands.

A badass Virginia restaurant owner fearlessly wrestled a gun out of the hands of a would-be robber because she thought the firearm was fake. She realized later that it was very real -- after it went it off in her hand.

Caught on camera: Business owner fights back with robbery suspect

Last week, an armed robber walked into Crazy Wings in Norfolk and pointed a gun at Keqiu Wang, demanding she open the cash register. Wang, who owns the restaurant with her husband, wasn't having it with this punk-ass robber and his fake-ass firearm. She fought back.

Surveillance camera footage shows Wang struggling with the hooded robber, grabbing his gun by the barrel and refusing to let go. The two wrestled behind the counter until Wang's husband came out of the kitchen with a huge knife and slashed the would-be robber in the back, chasing him off.

Badass cashier fights off armed robber with her bare hands

This guy messed with the wrong convenience store clerk.

File under badass. In Georgia, security cameras caught a fierce-as-hell convenience store clerk fighting off a would-be robber who pulled a gun on her. Punk-ass thief messed with the wrong woman.

VIDEO: Cashier fights back, slaps gun from robber's hand

Cashier Bhumika Patel was working alone last Tuesday at the Keysville Convenience Store when a hooded customer approached the counter with a can of Mountain Dew. (Really, dude?) The gas station's surveillance video shows him pulling out a gun, demanding the cash from the open register.

Not having any of that nonsense, Patel swats at the robber's hand, trying to get the point-blank gun away from him. After several attempts, she ends up hitting him over the head with the register drawer.

Sufficiently scared, the robber runs off. But Bhumika is not done. She pulls out a hammer from under the counter -- because, of course, she's got a hammer under there -- and chases him out of the store. You're damn right, she's got a hammer. Don't make her use it.

Chloe Kim wins two gold medals at Youth Winter Olympics

Is there any doubt that Chloe Kim is the best damn snowboarder in the world right now?

I keep writing posts about Chloe Kim because she continues to be awesome, and shows no signs of stopping. Her latest triumph: winning two gold medals at the Winter Youth Olympic Games in Lillehammer, Norway.

Chloe Kim sweeps halfpipe, slopestyle at Youth Winter Olympics

The 15-year-old snowboarding phenom from La Palma, California kicked off the Youth Winter Olympic festivities by serving as Team USA's flag bearer for the Opening Ceremony, then proceeded to take gold last week in both the halfpipe and slopestyle -- despite dealing with a stomach problem and a sore knee.

On day 3 of Youth Olympic games -- less than a week after she became the first woman to score a perfect 100 in a top-level competition -- Chloe took the gold medal in the women's halfpipe with an impressive overall score of 96.50, ahead of silver medalist Emily Arthur of Australia and bronze medalist Yu-Rim Jeong of South Korea.

Gas station owner fights off armed robber with his shoe

Armed with nothing more than footwear and guts, 58-year-old Amrik Singh thwarted a masked gunman.

File under badass. Folks, let us give it up for the New York gas station owner who successfully thwarted an attempted armed robbery by throwing his shoe at the gunman and chasing him out of his store.

VIDEOS: Hyde Park store owner fights off gunman

Earlier this month, 58-year-old Amrik Singh, owner of the Citgo gas station in Staatsburg, found himself face to face with a masked man who walked in wielding a shotgun and demanding money. But the gunman, 26-year-old Christopher Dam, messed with the wrong man -- a man armed with a shoe.

Former Navy corpsman awarded Silver Star for valor

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan "Doc" Kong ran into heavy gunfire to save a wounded Marine.

File Under Badass... Last week, a former Navy hospital corpsman was awarded a Silver Star -- the military's third-highest award for valor -- for saving the life of a wounded Marine during an enemy ambush in Afghanistan.

Silver Star for Doc who fought to save Marine

Petty Officer 2nd Class Jonathan Kong was serving in the Sangin District of Afghanistan with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment in 2011 when he and fellow service members came under attack by Taliban fighters. During the firefight, Marine Cpl. Michael Dawers was shot in the chest and fell to the ground.

According to the Silver Star citation, Kong was initially pinned down by enemy fire but "courageously rushed from his covered position, boldly charged into the kill zone dodging a hail of bullets, and reached the casualty," pulling him to safety and administering "life-saving aid."

File Under Badass: Gas station clerk thwarts robbery with mixed martial arts

These thieves picked the wrong gas station. The one with a MMA fighter working behind the counter.

Crime doesn't pay. In fact, sometimes it hurts like a kick in the face. Some would-be thieves in Houston learned that the hard way when they tried to rob a gas station employee... and got their asses kicked by a convenience store clerk who also happens to be a muthaeffin' mixed martial arts fighter.

Gas station clerk with MMA training surprises thieves

Mayura Dissanyake was working behind the counter at Fuel Depot when he saw two men outside jump out of an SUV and attack his co-worker, who was returning to the store after a run to the bank. Dissanyake, who is trained in mixed martial arts and apparently was a champion in Sri Lanka, sprung into action.

"The first guy I saw, I just kicked him in the face. Then I punched the other guy."

An effective strategy. Let's go to the tape:

Most Awesome Photo Ever: A Girl and Her Eagle

Meet 13-year-old Ashol-Pan, badass Mongolian eagle huntress

Thanks to all the folks who sent this photo my way... because it is awesome. Meet 13-year-old Ashol-Pan, a typical smiling, sweet and shy girl from western Mongolia... who happens to know how to hunt with a freaking eagle. Perhaps the country's only eagle huntress. And she's apparently damn good at it too.

A 13-year-old eagle huntress in Mongolia

Ashol-Pan, the daughter of a celebrated hunter, is the lone girl amidst a tradition of Kazakh boys who start learning how to use golden eagles to hunt for foxes and hares at the age of 13. She is f**king fierce!

20 Years of Angry Little Asian Girl, 1994-2014

Congratulations on two decades of Anger

One of the repeat questions I've gotten over the years: "Angry Asian Man? Are you at all related to Angry Little Asian Girl?" No. Not in any sort of trademarked affiliation. But I consider her a true sibling in Anger with a capital A. And definitely a major spiritual inspiration for the earliest iteration of this blog.

So, a massive congratulations goes my friend Lela Lee, creator of the comic strip Angry Little Asian Girl, which is celebrating twenty years of anger. Two decades of the baddest little foul-mouthed, middle finger-wielding Asian girl born of paper and ink, who spoke for a generation of Asian American women.

Lela Lee created Angry Little Asian Girl back in 1994 as a short video, made in reaction to some offensive cartoons she saw at an animation festival. Later, she took on the form of an online comic strip, which spawned books, merchandise, and a legion of fans -- including this Angry Asian blogger.

To celebrate these two glorious decades of anger, Lela has posted an online art show featuring some of the earliest renditions of ALAG, and the evolution of her comic strip. Check it out here. And for more on Angry Little Asian Girl, check out the website and follow updates on Facebook.

Again: congratulations, Lela. We salute you!

Mom jumps under rolling car to save her kids

Mindy Tran used her "body as a speed bump" to stop her runaway car

Call them badass motherly instincts. In Massachussetts, a woman suffered a crushed knee and dislocated shoulder and hip when she threw herself under her car -- a human speed bump -- to save her two children inside.

Lawrence mom used 'body as speed bump' to save twins from rolling car

Last month, Mindy Tran parked her Honda Accord into her garage and got out, when the car started rolling -- with her twin toddlers buckled inside! As the car lurched forward, before it rolled down her steep driveway towards traffic, Tran dove into action, using her body as a speed bump to slow it down enough before one of her neighbors ran over to help.

File Under Badass: 61-year-old barefoot, sari-clad woman wins at Baramati Marathon

Lata Bhagwan Kare beat out experienced runners in her very first race

How are your new year's resolutions going? Getting back on that treadmill? Thinking about running a marathon? If you're thinking about lacing up and going the distance, consider this story from a couple of weeks ago... Last month in India, a 61-year-old woman finished first in her race at the Baramati Marathon. Dressed in a sari. Barefoot.

61-year-old woman clad in sari and running barefoot wins Baramati Marathon

Lata Bhagwan Kare, a laborer from the town of Pimpli, surprised everyone by coming out of nowhere to not only win her first-ever 3K race, but beating out much more experienced runners in the senior category to the finish line. Pretty badass, considering that she signed up to participate in the race just days before the event.

And did I mention she did it without any sneakers or fancy running gear? Well, she actually started the race with slippers on, but they came off just a few meters into the race. They just got in the way:

File Under Badass: Donut shop owner fights off armed robbers with pepper spray

These guys did not know who they were messing with.

This story out Tennessee is a couple of weeks old, but hey, I thought you'd really want to know about the badass donut shop owner who fought off three armed robbers with pepper spray -- and it was all caught on tape: Caught On Camera: Donut Shop Owner Pepper Sprays Armed Robbers.

Earlier this month, three would-be robbers walked into Nina's Donut Cafe in Southeast Memphis and pulled a gun on owner Sohka Chin, demanding all the money in the cash register. Big fat mistake, suckas.

Instead of money, Chin gave them each a face full of hurt, courtesy of the can of pepper spray she conveniently keeps in arm's reach from the register. She got all three of the guys in the face, and they ran off crying.

The whole incident was caught on surveillance video. Here's the news clip:

Restaurant owner thwarts iPhone thief with an asskicking

Badass restauranteur Jason Chan is a 19-year practitioner of Shidokan.

BOOM. Feel the fist of justice. In Chicago, a restaurant owner used his martial arts skills to knock out a thief who stole a customer's iPhone: Restaurant Owner Serves Knuckle Sandwich To Alleged iPhone Thief.

Restauranteur Jason Chan owns the Lincoln Park sushi joint Juno. He also happens to be a practitioner of the martial art Shidokan, a style of karate. But more on that in a bit.

Chan was suspicious of 37-year-old Justin Ballog when he entered the restaurant and placed his jacket on the bar. When Ballog suddenly snatched his coat back and ran out of the restaurant, a customer realized the man had grabbed his iPhone.

Oh helll no. Chan immediately took off in search of the thief, and remembering his distinct striped sweater, tracked him to a restaurant a few blocks down the street. That's where he confronted him, and that's where Chan's Shidokan skills came in handy when Ballog tried to get physical.

He knocked him him out with a kick to the face:

Watch the Indonesian teaser for The Raid 2: Berandal

Like I said, you had me at "Hammer Girl."

Hell yes. Action movie fans, rejoice. Twitch just premiered the international teaser trailer for The Raid 2: Berandal, sequel to the smash hit Indonesian action flick, and holy moly it's got me crap-pants excited.

The first movie (retitled The Raid: Redemption for release here in the States) followed a SWAT team that gets trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and must fight off his army of killers and thugs, floor by floor. All of the action -- and there is an insane quantity of it -- basically takes place in one building. It's just thirty stories of nonstop machine guns, machetes and fisticuffs. And it's awesome.

This new teaser indicates that they're broadening the scope and scale of this world. Picking up where the first movie left off, Iko Uwais returns as Officer Rama, as well as a colorful new cast of characters, to amp up the action. Did I mention there is character named "Hammer Girl"? Badass. Take a look:

File Under Badass: Malala Yousafzai on The Daily Show

16-year-old stood up to the Taliban, schools Jon Stewart.

On Tuesday, Comedy Central's The Daily Show welcomed 16-year-old Malala Yousafzai, one of the most badass people to walk this earth, for one the most inspirational television interviews ever.

A year ago, Malala was shot in the head by a gunman after her public fight for the right of girls to get an education put her in the crosshairs of the Pakistani Taliban. But she survived. Today, she is the youngest person ever to be nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, and her memoir, I Am Malala is out this week.

Like I said, badass. Watch this extended, unedited interview as host Jon Stewart is visibly moved, humbled and at points left speechless by this courageous young woman:
