center for pacific asian family: april is sexual assault awareness month

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month. If you're in the Los Angeles area, the Center for Pacific Asian Family has two events planned for the month: a verbal and physical self-defense workshop at USC and a Sexual Assault/Domestic Violence/Language Bank training for folks who are interested in volunteering with us as interpreters. The self-defense workshop is open to anyone who is interested. (Please excuse the karate lady in the flyer above.) Here are some more details:

research study: stories of adult transnational adoptees and their american parents

I recently heard from Charlie Ritts, the Vice President of Korean Adoptees of Hawai'i, who's working with her mom on a book on transnational adoptees and their American parents. She's currently conducting research and is putting a call out to adult transnational adoptees or the adoptive parents of an adult transnational adoptee to participate in a study. Here's the his blurb:

xyzr_kx's kickstarter campaign for secession in astropolis

XYZR_KX, aka electronic musician Jon Monteverde, is raising money for the release of his next album Secession in Astropolis, and is in the middle of a Kickstarter campaign to make it happen. The album is actually recorded and ready. He just needs the funds to get it out there. That is, of course, where you come in. Jon explains (and gives you a little preview) in this video:

four arrested san francisco teen's murder

Damn. In San Francisco, four teenage boys have been arrested and fifth is being sought in the death of 16-year-old Andy Zeng, as well as an alleged arson plot -- presumably in an attempt to destroy evidence of the murder: 4 teens held, 1 sought in S.F. boy's killing.

Zeng was reportedly killed early Sunday, and the first floor of the two-story duplex where he died had been soaked in gasoline. The suspects, who range from ages 15 to 17, are being held on suspicion of attempted arson and conspiracy, while one of them is also facing a murder charge:

music video: "as the globe spins" by azure

Diggin' this. Here's the freshly dropped music video for "As The Globe Spins" by Azuré, aka Justin Park. Representing the Bay! The video's all right, and fairly well produced... but it's really the track that impresses. I'm loving that laid-back vibe, like something from another era. Check it out:

political strategist kam kuwata found dead

Kam Kuwata, one of California's leading and best-known Democratic political consultants, has died. Police officers reportedly found him on the floor of his condo in Venice, California. He was 57: Leading California Democratic strategist Kam Kuwata dies at 57.

Friend and family apparently grew concerned when they had not heard from Kuwata for several days. The cause of death was not immediately known, but there was reportedly no indication of foul play. He was a highly regarded political personality who worked as a top strategist for Dianne Feinstein:

music video: "machine civilization" by genki sudo/world order

This music video by World Order, led by retired Japanese mixed martial artist-turned-musician Genki Sudo, is pretty frickin' amazing. I don't know if they're supposed to be robots or just really stiff salarymen... but whatever they're doing, the choreography and movement is totally mesmerizing. Take a look:

angry reader of the week: thomas belfer

Hey! It's time to meet another Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Thomas Belfer, who I met during my recent travels to the Claremont Colleges.

sex ray vision: "america's next popstars might be computer science nerds from stanford"

Sex Ray Vision, aka Ravi and Brian, are two Stanford University students "who just want to rock your world." Their music dropped in my mailbox a couple of weeks ago making some pretty bold claims (subject line: "America's next popstars might be Computer Science nerds from Stanford"). It took me a while to get around to giving them a listen, but I'm diggin' it. Some solid electronic pop. You can listen to a sampling of their best songs here.

And because I can't get this damn song out of my head... here's Sex Ray Vision's flipped out remix of Rebecca Black's "Friday":

aajc youth advisory council student questionnaire

Hey students! The Asian American Justice Center Youth Advisory Council is asking for your help in filling out a short questionnaire so that they can better understand how they can adequately help support you and the organizations on your campus. It doesn't take a lot of time to fill out, and will be extremely helpful to them. Fill out the questionnaire here. They'll be closing the survey on April 15.

tsuyoshi nishioka injured in second base collision

Ouch. On Thursday, during the Minnesota Twins' game against Yankees, second baseman Tsuyoshi Nishioka was taken out of the game with a fractured bone in his lower left leg after Nick Siwher slid into him. But it looks like he wasn't seriously hurt: Nishioka evaluated, no surgery or cast needed.

miles straume 8-inch action figure

I am inspired by the "Asian Pop" discussion of Asian American Ken dolls... so check out this action figure of Miles Straume from Lost.

Modeled after actor Ken Leung, it's an 8-inch, retro-styled figure with real fabric clothing, and comes paired with a pregnant Claire Littleton figure.

The set won't be available until July 2011, but you can pre-order them now from Entertainment Earth. There's a Sayid figure too.

asian american ken

Jeff Yang's latest "Asian Pop" for SF Gate is all about Ken. As in Barbie's boyfriend, who is actually turning 50 this year. To mark the occassion, Jeff writes about going in search Asian American male dolls and coming up very few and mostly uninspired choices: Yes we Ken?

didn't know optimus prime could get down like that

I do not know what this is. It was uploaded back in December, but I just saw it posted on Facebook. Its origins appear to be from Japan, and it is friggin' awesome. You've seen the Filipino inmates do their world-famous "Thriller" routine in the Cebu prison courtyard. Now see Transformers pay homage to Michael Jackson's iconic choreography:

"vigilante grocer" remains a talking point for politicians

Interesting... Remember Toronto Chinatown's "vigilante grocer"? In May 2009, David Chen made national headlines when he was arrested on charges of forcible confinement and assault after apprehended a shoplifter at his store, the Lucky Moose Food Mart. Chen was eventually acquitted.

The case got the attention of a lot of people in high places. Nearly two years later, the Lucky Moose Food Mart continues to be a significant talking point as federal politicians see to woo Canada's ethnic vote in the upcoming elections: Lucky Moose remains focal point for politicians.

adam warrock show at meltdown comics, april 11

If you're in Southern California, here's a very unique hip hop show you have to check out... My man Eugene Ahn, aka nerdcore rapper Adam WarRock, is playing a big show on Monday, April 11 at Meltdown Comics in Los Angeles. The attorney-turned-geek emcee raps about popular culture, comic books and other nerdy awesome topics. And he's great. Here are some more details about the show:

music video: "something" by bambu

Whoa. Whoa. Last month, I posted about "Something," an amazing new track from Los Angeles-based emcee Bambu, and produced by DJ Phatrick. The song delves into the issue of domestic violence from a personal perspective. The music video just dropped. It's intense. Take a look:

job opportunity: summer internships at visual communications

Hey, students! What are you doing this summer? Visual Communications, the nation's premier Asian Pacific media arts center, is offering two paid summer internship opportunities for college undergraduates (including seniors who will be graduating in June).

Important note: applicants must be residents or attend college in Los Angeles County. Here are some more details about the positions:

senate judiciary committee recommends goodwin liu for federal judgeship

Good news for President Obama's federal appeals court nominee Goodwin Liu. Once again -- for the third time -- the Senate Judiciary Committee has recommended the UC Berkeley law professor for a federal judgeship: Senate panel again OKs Liu for appellate court.

On Thursday, Democrats voted in support of his nomination and all Republicans on the committee voted to oppose him on a 10-8 party line vote. However, this time one Republican, Tom Coburn of Oklahoma, predicted that Liu would probably get confirmed:

white house initiative calls upon aapi youth to become teachers

The White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders recently issued a call to action encouraging AAPI community members to consider making a difference in the lives of children by becoming teachers. As the baby boomer generation retires, the U.S. anticipates losing more than a million teachers. Today, AAPIs make up less than 1 percent of all teachers.

Earlier this year, to promote the teaching profession among AAPI youth, the Initiative hosted a roundtable featuring Commissioner Sefa Aina, TEACH campaign director Taryn Benarroch, teacher and singer/songwriter Clara C. and singer/songwriter David Choi. Here's the video from that roundtable:

bay area marine harry lew dies in afghanistan

Received the news that 21-year-old Lance Cpl. Harry Lew, a Marine from Santa Clara, CA, died Sunday while serving in Afghanistan. The details of death were not disclosed, but he had been supporting combat operations in Helmand province: Harry Lew, South Bay Marine, dies in Afghanistan.

jennifer lopez dresses up in asian crap

This ridiculous photo of Jennifer Lopez is from the spring 2011 ad campaign for Barcelona-based TOUS jewelry. Don't know what went into the decision to Oriental-ize her, but she sure looks damn silly. (Take note of the photo with the chopsticks.) Hey! Let's pose J.Lo with a bunch of random Asian crap. All that's missing is a picture of her hugging a panda. See the rest here. (Thanks, Lauren.)

tiger cub accepted to harvard

This news dropped into my lap last Friday via law blog Above the Law, but I was reluctant to post anything because 1) I pretty much questioned the veracity of all news that came my way on April Fool's. 2) I've been suffering from Tiger Mom Burnout for several months. And 3) Who cares? But people seem really obsessed with this, so I'm passing the news along.

It seems that 18-year-old Sophia Chua-Rubenfeld, eldest daughter of the infamous Amy Chua, has been accepted to Harvard. And Yale, according the Yale Daily News. But she's still apparently deciding between the two schools. The dilemma! Well, congratulations, Tiger Mom. You did it:

3af video smackdown contest

Hey, young people. The Asian American Advertising Federation (3AF) has launched a contest called 3AF Video Smackdown. They're putting a call out to young folks to create a short YouTube video that answer the question: how do young Asian Americans consume media? (Including but not limited to TV, magazines, cell phone apps, radio, online, concerts, etc.) Basically, they're trying to gather information on this topic, so they're going straight to the source -- you. Here are some more details about the contest:

if you've ever wondered what sulu looks like in a spider-man suit...

Broadway's problem-plagued Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark has already gone through so many mishaps and bad press, no amount of money, re-casting or Bono seems to be able to fix it. But have the producers really tried everything? Here's what the show really needs: more George Takei. So here you go. George Takei auditions for the Spider-Man musical:

san francisco chef sued in culinary school scam

This week in San Francisco, City Attorney Dennis Herrera filed suit against Angelo Mueller Degenhardt, aka "Chef Angelo Mueller," a one-time convicted con artist whose latest scam bilked dozens of Chinese immigrant students of as much as $3,600 each in tuition payments.

Recruited from San Francisco's Chinese immigrant community, students enrolled in the so-called "Academie de Cuisine" were promised formal culinary training and paid externships, students. In reality, they didn't receive a damn thing, and were instead exploited for free labor.

The lawsuit against Mueller seeks injunctive relief to halt the academy's operation as well as civil penalties up to $2,500 for each violation; disgorgement of all profits; and full payment of all withheld wages to workers together with liquidated damages owed under San Francisco's Minimum Wage Ordinance. From the city attorney's press release:

don't stop believin': everyman's journey teaser trailer

The rags-to-rock story of Arnel Pineda, who was plucked from internet obscurity to become the current lead singer of Journey, is a modern fairy tale story that deserves the movie treatment. That movie is coming: Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey, directed by award-winning filmmaker Ramona S. Diaz, is a documentary on Arnel Pineda's amazing tale. Here's the teaser trailer:

judge orders woman to indefinite jury duty for being a dumbass

You're an idiot, Juror No. 799. Yesterday in New York, a federal judge ordered a woman to indefinite jury duty for making stupid, inappropriate and racist remarks on her juror questionnaire: Judge gives 'Juror No. 799' indefinite jury duty after she makes racist remarks on questionnaire.

Juror No. 799, described as "an Asian woman in her 20s" reportedly made disparaging comments about African-Americans, Hispanics, Haitians and police officers, in addition to identifying herself as a relative of a former Chinese gang member convicted of murder:

31-legged asian victory

This is what true winning looks like. Three-legged race? That's nothing. I don't know where or why this was filmed, but witness the awesome sight of thirty kids tied together and successfully running across the length of a gym.

Most of us can barely walk in a three-legged race at a friggin' picnic. There are apparently regional and nationwide competitions for the 31-legged race in Japan. That is some serious coordination and practice.

You know, it's awful, but I'm not going to lie... I'm sort of curious to see the video of what it looks like when the 31-legged race goes horribly wrong. (Thanks, Henry.)

census: new york city's asian american population grew by 32%

Last week, the U.S. Census Bureau released detailed data from the 2010 census for the state of New York. The Bureau reported an all time high of 1,579,494 Asian Americans in the state; and 1,038,388 in New York City -- 13% of the city's population. The Bureau also found that Asian Americans were the state's fastest growing minority group, with a growth rate of 35.9%.

However, the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund points out that the numbers might have actually been higher had there not been so many problems in the Census Burea's operations and outreach to Asian Americans.

The 2010 census reported unusual minimal growth in Queens County, with a population increase of less than 2,000 people. AALDEF monitored the Census Bureau's outreach efforts to Asian Americans in Queens and reported a number of problems to the Census Director last April:

far east movement performs "if I was you" for perez hilton

While I'm never eager to link to anything related to PerezHilton, I gotta show some love for this exclusive video of Far East Movement performing this cool version of their latest hit "If I Was You (OMG)."

Though, to be totally honest, sitting-on-the-couch Far East Movement is far less exciting than jumping-up-and-down Far East Movement. As always, to hear more from these guys, check out the FM website here.

derick needs a bone marrow match

Got this message passed along to me about Derick, a 17-year-old high school student who is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy treatment for Acute Lymphocyctic Leukemia, and is need of a bone marrow donor.

Unfortunately, there's no match in Derick's family, so they're reaching out to the community. While a match could come from anyone, the closest matches will likely be from bi-racial, Asian-Caucasian -- especially Korean-Caucasian -- donors. Here's a message from his sister:

"armed asian male" at ut-austin turns out to be false alarm

I was seriously freaked out for about ten minutes this afternoon, thanks to The Daily Texan's Twitter feed, which reported about a possible "Asian male armed with two tan shotguns" spotted on the campus of UT-Austin.

Yes, I am one of those people who drops everything when I hear news about a possible shooter or gunman. I say prayer that nobody gets hurt... then I say a prayer that the person in question isn't Asian.

drowned student's toxicology tests show high alcohol level

An update on the death of UC Riverside student Alan Lin, who went missing in early February before his body was found a week later floating in Newport Bay. His lungs were full of fluid, and the coroner concluded he died of salt-water drowning, but toxicology tests show that he had an unusually high amount of alcohol in his system: Tests show high alcohol level in drowned student.

According to test results, which were released last week, Alan had a blood-alcohol level between 0.16 and 0.19. According to government blood-alcohol charts, a man his size would typically need seven or eight alcoholic drinks in an hour to reach that level, and it's likely he would have been "confused and dizzy, slurring his speech and having trouble walking."

The police investigation is still ongoing, but Alan's family is still looking for answers about the night of his death. His sister indicated that that it was unusual for Alan to drink that much, and alluded to some kind of argument or altercation that happened at the Newport Beach bar where he was last seen:

At the risk of further perpetuating the evil known as Rebecca Black's "Friday," here's a pretty amusing cover by SongstaForLife, a man of many t-shirts and many facial expressions.
