lawmakers condemn lowe's for withdrawing advertising from all-american muslim

By now, you've heard about Lowe's ridiculous, cowardly decision to pull advertising from Discovery Channel/TLC's All-American Muslim, a reality show depicting the lives of Muslim American families living in suburban Michigan, including the discrimination they encounter because of their religious beliefs: Lowe's faces backlash over pulling ads from 'All-American Muslim.'

The home improvement chain withdrew advertising after the conservative, anti-Muslim Florida Family Association accused the show of being "propaganda that riskily hides the Islamic agenda's clear and present danger to American liberties and traditional values." It's dumbass, hateful nonsense, but Lowe's lacked any kind of spine to listen to reason and caved.

Several politicians, including California State Senator Ted Lieu and Congresswoman Judy Chu, Chair of the Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus, are condemning Lowe's actions: Lawmaker: Lowe's 'bigoted' for pulling 'All-American Muslim' ads. Here's Rep. Judy Chu's statement:

visions of astropolis, december 16

If you're in Chicago, I implore you to check out the premiere screening of Visions of Astropolis, an audio-visual collaboration between indie-rock/electro-pop artist XYZR_KX and visual artist Chien-An Yuan, described as "a hypnotic expedition into the vanishing dreams of a not so distant future."

What the heck does that mean? The evening will feature a live performance, videos and a special preview of the upcoming Visions of Astropolis sound and visual installation. It's happening this Friday, December 16 at Transistor in Chicago. And it's free. Here are some more details:

parents asked church member to discipline their kid -- with a beating

What the hell? Last week in Irvine, California, a man was arrested for beating a teen with a metal pipe -- with the permission of the kid's parents: Authorities: Southern California family asked fellow churchgoer to beat their child.

According to authorities, the parents dropped of their child at the home of 39-year-old Paul Kim, asking him to discipline the 15-year-old after they found a lighter in his possession. Kim was apparently their church's go-to guy when parents needed someone to kick their kids' ass:

guest post by karin chien: an open letter to the producers guild of america

Our friend, indie film producer extraordinaire Karin Chien, whose latest film Circumstance is nominated for an Independent Spirit Award, drops in with a guest post calling out the Producers Guild of America on their outdated, archaic and inexplicable English-only stipulation for awards consideration.

Recently, a film I produced with Melissa Lee and Maryam Keshavarz, Circumstance, was submitted for the Producer's Guild of America's awards consideration. Circumstance is a hard film to categorize: it's a story of teenage love and personal freedom set in Iran, filmed in Beirut, edited in Chile, finished in France, and financed primarily by U.S. sources. And the film is in Farsi. We knew we were a long shot to be nominated, but we were still excited by the prospect. Producing is often thankless and invisible work, and awards that solely recognize a producer's contribution are few and far between.

That excitement ended when I received an email from the PGA's Director of Arbitrations & Legal Affairs on December 1. It informed us "unfortunately under the current rule structure, we are unable to accept foreign language films at this time."

chan sung jung defeats mark hominick in seven seconds

I'll admit I'm not much a fight fan, but this is pretty sweet. Over the weekend at UFC 140 in Toronto, underdog South Korean fighter Chan Sung Jung, aka "The Korean Zombie," took down Mark Hominick in just seven seconds -- tying record for fastest knockout in UFC history. Here's the video (it's short):

firefighters in pearl harbor photo identified!

Remember that awesome photo of female firefighters at Pearl Harbor? Some research has turned up more information about the photo to set the record straight. Turns out, the photo was indeed taken at Pearl Harbor, but definitely not on December 7, 1941: Pearl Harbor surprise: Photo of female firefighters wasn't from Dec. 7.

It's likely that this is actually a Navy publicity photo taken to showcase the roles of women during role. At some point, the photo was mislabeled by various sources that described it as taken during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. But the original photo has been uncovered at the Hawaii War Records Depository -- with the correct caption:

"A crew of women fire fighters, all crews having been chosen from personnel working in the immediate vicinity of the pumper stations. From left to right: Elizabeth Moku, Alice Cho, Katherine Lowe, and Hilda Van Gieson."

The woman pictured second the right, Katherine Lowe, is still living in Hawaii at age 96. She confirms that the photo definitely wasn't taken December 7, 1941:

jeremy lin heading to the houston rockets

On Friday, news broke that Jeremy Lin had been let go from the Warriors. That had to be rough to get cut from his hometown team, but before the end of the weekend, we had already gotten word (via Jeremy's tweet) that he has been scooped up by the Houston Rockets: Rockets pick up guard Lin.

Last week in Champaign, Illinois, a man was arrested on attempted murder charges after slashing the throat of a South Asian university professor in a vicious hate crime attack at a train station: One Injured, One Arrested After Knife Attack At Train Station.

Chick-fil-A cashier names customers "Ching" and "Chong"

UC Irvine students find racial slurs on their fast food receipts.

Several folks have sent this my way... If you need more reason not to like Chick-fil-A, check out this Tumblr post about some UC Irvine students' -- who happen to be Asian -- recent visit to the fast food chain.

Take a good look at those receipts. The cashier, identified as "Lia," did not ask for their names when she took their orders, but apparently took it upon herself to provide these Asian customers with names of her own invention:

the library "finals freakout" video

It's been a hell of year for Asians and libraries. I guess we couldn't close out the year without one last bit of Asian library madness. This video, apparently shot during finals at Cal State Northridge, is rapidly making the rounds today. At the center, we have an agitated Asian American student having a certified freakout in the library, directed at fellow students who were being too noisy:

it's the hollywood whitewash: tom cruise to star in japanese novel adaptation all you need is kill

Well, hooray again for Hollywood. Last week, word got out that the one and only Tom Cruise has signed on to star in Warner Brothers' sci-fi action flick All You Need Is Kill, based on the Japanese novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka: Tom Cruise cues 'All You Need Is Kill.'

I originally posted something about this project over a year ago. Alas, you know the drill. The movie adaptation has been completely scrubbed out all traces of the the source material's Japanese-ness. Thus "Keiji Kiriya" becomes "Billy Cage," and everything's neat, tidy and white. As usual.

sidwell friend school is serving "asian" food today. so what?

Wow. I guess things are pretty slow in the WUSA 9 news room. Because this story, written by Manny Fantis, appears to be a blatant attempt to create some bullshit controversy out of nothing. It's also flat-out ignorant as hell: Sidwell Friends School, Sasha and Malia Obama's School, Opts For Asian, including Japanese Food On Pearl Harbor Day.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. A day of remembrance. But this observant reporter has made the shocking discovery that the Sidwell Friends School, where President Obama's daughters attend, is serving up -- gasp! -- Asian food on the lunch menu. On today of all days! The insensitivity.

america's best dance crew season seven auditions

It's back! MTV is currently casting season seven of the hit dance competition America's Best Dance Crew. They're looking for "the most talented, fresh, creative, and diverse crews to dominate the ABDC stage."

11-year-old kid fights back against kidnapping carjacker

You're eleven years old. You and your little sister are waiting for your dad in his truck, when a stranger jumps in tries to drive off with it -- with you inside. What would you do? I think I'd pee in my pants.

This actually happened to 11-year-old Jonah Yano on Thanksgiving Day. However, he did not pee in his pants. He took action: 11-Year-Old Hero Attacks Kidnapping Suspect, Protects His Younger Sister.

When the suspect got in the truck, Jonah jumped on him, giving his dad enough time to open the door, pull the carjacker out of the truck, and beat the crap out of him. That's a badass big brother:

some asian american college applicants are leaving the 'asian' check box blank

Got bombarded over the weekend with this Associated Press article about college-bound mixed-race Asian American students who are choosing not to identify themselves as 'Asian' on their applications: Some Asians' college strategy: Don't check 'Asian.'

The idea is to get an edge at elite schools, where Asian Americans are perceptibly held to higher admissions standards than applicants from other ethnic groups. If standing out from the crowd means keeping quiet about being Asian, a lot of applicants are apparently leaving that check box blank:
