There have been so many of these incidents lately, it's hard to keep them straight. In New York, a man was arrested on hate crime charges for assaulting South Asian restaurant workers and throwing chairs into a glass partition after demanding to know if the employees were Muslim.

The incident occurred last week at the Salt & Pepper restaurant in Herald Square, where 26-year-old Robert Murino ordered a slice of pizza then began questioning workers -- who hail from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh -- about their religion and opinions of ISIS, and called an employee a "Muslim motherfucker."

Part of the incident was caught on camera. Murino can be seen reaching across the counter and slapping an employee in the face. Later, he is seen picking up chairs and smashing them into glass partitions.

What the hell is going on, America? This shit is out of control. In Michigan, a robber called an Indian convenience store clerk a "terrorist" and accused him of being in ISIS before shooting him the face. Police say they are investigating the robbery as a hate crime.

Thankfully, the victim survived and is expected to recover.

On Saturday night, an armed robber entered Bottlenecks Food and Drink Shop in Grand Rapids and demanded money from the 34-year-old store worker, who is of Indian descent. Then the robber led him to a back storage room where he put the barrel of a long gun into the worker's mouth.

More idiocy in the name of "safety." In San Diego, three Sikh football fans say they were harassed and nearly barred by security from entering Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday because they were wearing turbans.

Varinder Malhi and his friends drove seven hours from Fresno to see the Denver Broncos play the San Diego Chargers. They were decked out in Broncos jerseys, hats and other fan gear, right down to the color-coordinated turbans they were wearing in accordance with their Sikh faith.

But when they tried to enter the stadium, security guards told Malhi and his friends that they couldn't enter the game unless they removed their turbans. They were ultimately allowed in, but were warned they wouldn't be able to wear their turbans again if they ever returned to the stadium.

On top of that, some overly nervous fan apparently got jumpy and called the cops when they saw Malhi and his turbaned friends in the parking lot, rummaging in the trunk of a car. They were just putting a bag back in the car when they realized they couldn't bring it inside the stadium.

School to be renamed for Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz

This week, a Bay Area middle school will be officially renamed in honor of labor leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz. It is believed to be the first school in the nation to be named in honor of Filipino Americans.

Union City school first in nation named for Filipino-Americans

On Friday, Alvarado Middle School in Union City will be renamed Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School. Itlong and Vera Cruz were key figures in the west coast labor movement, working with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s to organize agricultural laborers and improve working conditions.

The name change was approved by the school board in 2013 after a vigorous community debate over whether to retain the name Alvarado, in honor of a 19th century Mexican governor.

According to a civil lawsuit filed against Oklahoma City, police officials were investigating serial rapist cop Daniel Holtzclaw six weeks before his final attack, but allowed him to remain on regular duty during the inquiry.

On Thursday, a jury convicted Holtzclaw of 18 of 36 charges of rape and sexual assault. Holtzclaw was accused of assaulting 13 women, all black, between late 2013 and June 18, 2014. But according to legal documents, the sex crimes unit began investigating Holtzclaw well over a month before his final assault.

The timing would mean that Holtzclaw attacked half of the women he has been convicted of assaulting while he was under investigation for sexual assault.

In Buena Park, California, a 20-year-old man has been arrested for the vandalism of a Sikh temple that was spray-painted with anti-Muslim profanity. Police had been investigating the incident as a hate crime.

The former star college football player cried openly in the courtroom as the verdict was being read.

On the Dr. Ken winter finale, Ken turns to lying, begging and bribing to try and get time off for the holidays.

Inspired by executive producer/star Ken Jeong's real life and career as a medical doctor, the multi-camera comedy Dr. Ken follows Dr. Ken Park, a physician with bad bedside manner trying to juggle medicine and being a family man to his wife and kids -- and not quite succeeding on either front.

Dr. Ken also stars the awesome Suzy Nakamura as Ken's wife Allison, Krista Marie Yu as daughter Molly, and Albert Tsai as his son Dave. They're all great. The cast is rounded out by Tisha Campbell-Martin as Damona, Jonathan Slavin as Clark, Kate Simses as Julie and Dave Foley as Pat.

The 12-year-old actor, who stars as Eddie Huang on the hit ABC comedy, is nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Youth (Series, Special, Television Movies or Mini-series).

Hudson's competition in the youth category includes Marcus Scribner, Marsai Martin and Miles Brown, who are all nominated for ABC's black-ish, and Skai Jackson for Disney Channel's Jessie.

Overall, ABC led all TV networks with 23 nominations.

Michelle Yeoh reprises her role as Yu Shu-Lien, now tasked with protecting the legendary Green Destiny sword against an evil warlord.

Writer/director Tze Chun, whose credits include Children of Invention, Cold Comes the Night and ABC's Once Upon a Time, looks back at the short film that jumpstarted his film and television career, ten years later.

Ten years ago this weekend, I directed a short film called Windowbreaker. The budget was $600, I shot it in my childhood home, and the crew consisted of three people, including my producer Bryan Wilson, who also acted in the movie. The kids in this movie were kids my mom knew from the neighborhood. My mom acted in the movie. The lighting kit was $70 for the weekend. The other crew consisted of my girlfriend (now wife)'s little sister and her little sister's best friend. I rented expendables from the same suburban camera lighting rental place where I rented lights for my senior project in high school.

On Friday evening, Siyuan Zhao was arrested at Art Basel Miami Beach for stabbing another woman in the neck and shoulder several times. The altercation reportedly started when the victim, 33-year-old Seo Young Shin, confronted Zhao, accusing her of following and repeatedly bumping into her at the festival.

According to police, Zhao responded by pulling out an X-Acto knife and attacking Shin.

George T. Sakato, the last survivor of seven Japanese American veterans who received the Medal of Honor -- the nation's highest award for valor -- passed away Wednesday evening in Denver. He was 94.

Born in Colton, California in 1921, Sakato joined the U.S. Army in 1944 after his family relocated to the Arizona to avoid internment on the west coast. He fought in Europe with the all-Japanese American 442nd Regimental Combat Team, one of the most highly decorated units of World War II.

Private Sakata received the Distinguished Service Cross, the Army's second-highest award for bravery, for his actions in a brutal battle in northeast France in October 1944 to rescue more than 200 soldiers from the Texas National Guard who were trapped behind enemy lines, later known as the "Lost Battalion."

Judd Apatow to produce Kumail Nanjiani's comedy 'The Big Sick'

Some cool movie news... FilmNation Entertainment has acquired worldwide rights and will fully finance comedian Kumail Nanjiani's comedy The Big Sick, with Judd Apatow and Barry Mendel producing.

Nanjiani, a stand-up comedian who stars in HBO's Silicon Valley, will star in the film. He co-wrote the semi-autobiographical script with his wife, writer/producer Emily V. Gordon. Michael Showalter will direct.

According to Deadline, the movie will be based on true events from the couple's lives.

Chick-fil-A receipt refers to customer as "Chinese guy"

How hard is it to ask for somebody's name?



Ah, yes. The racial receipt strikes again! A recent customer at a Chick-fil-A location in Detroit was surprised to discover that instead of his name, the cashier had simply referred to him as "Chinese guy" on his receipt.

Winston Chow, who is indeed of Chinese descent, recently bought a sandwich at the Chick-fil-A location in the Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Only later, when he looked at his receipt, he realized that Nia, the cashier, had identified him as "Chinese guy" in the space where, presumably, the customer's name should be entered.

"Now I know why they didn't ask for my name when taking my order," Winston remarked, sharing a photo of his receipt on social media. He also posted the photo on Chick-Fil-A's Facebook page. While he's been a fan of the fast food chain for over thirty years, he says he was pretty offended.

"How about some racial sensitivity or discretion next time?!"

An update on the attack on David Henry Hwang... Police investigators have released surveillance photos of the suspect who slashed the award-winning playwright in the neck in apparent random street attack.

Hwang was walking on S. Oxford Avenue near Lafayette Avenue in Brooklyn on Sunday night when the attacker walked up behind, stabbed him in the neck and ran off. Hwang felt pain in his neck and realized he was bleeding out. Fortunately, he managed to walk himself to the hospital for treatment.

Ken Jeong's got hoop dreams on 'Dr. Ken'

This week on ABC's Dr. Ken, Ken's got hoop dreams for Dave, who couldn't care less about basketball -- he'd rather go to a city council meeting than play in a game -- much to his father's dismay.

Inspired by executive producer/star Ken Jeong's real life and career as a medical doctor, the multi-camera comedy Dr. Ken follows Dr. Ken Park, a physician with bad bedside manner trying to juggle medicine and being a family man to his wife and kids -- and not quite succeeding on either front.

Dr. Ken also stars the awesome Suzy Nakamura as Ken's wife Allison, Krista Marie Yu as daughter Molly, and Albert Tsai as his son Dave. They're all great. The cast is rounded out by Tisha Campbell-Martin as Damona, Jonathan Slavin as Clark, Kate Simses as Julie and Dave Foley as Pat.

Hwang was carrying groceries home in Fort Greene on Sunday night when an unknown attacker slashed his neck from behind. He didn't see the attacker fleeing, but he felt pain in his neck and realized he was bleeding out. Fortunately, he managed to walk himself to the hospital for treatment.

If you're in the Los Angeles area, you're invited to take part in a solidarity candlelight vigil to honor the lives of those who have passed away in recent attacks, the dignity of Syrian refugees, as well as the safety and justice of Americans, particularly Muslim, Sikh, South Asian and Arab American communities. It's happening Thursday, December 10 at the Japanese American Cultural & Community Center in Little Tokyo.

All (two) Asians look alike on 'Orange Is The New Black'?

Rolling Stone's 'Best TV Shows' list confuses Netflix series' two Asian American characters.



On the latest season of Netflix's Orange Is The New Black, we got to see a rare bit of backstory for one of the series' more elusive characters, Chang, played by Lori Tan Chinn. Apparently, she made such an impression on Rolling Stone, they confused her with the show's other Asian American actress.

The women's prison dramedy made Rolling Stone's list of the 25 Best TV Shows of 2015, sitting pretty at the respectable #13 position. But in describing a highlight from the show, the writer mixes up the two Asian American characters, Chang and Soso, played by Kimiko Glenn.

Orange Is The New Black writer/executive producer Sara Hess pointed out the mistake on Twitter:

This is amazing. Our friend, the wonderfully talented singer/songwriter Jane Lui just released this delightfully brilliant music video for "Southern Winds", an original tune from album Goodnight Company. It's a gorgeous tune, but the video is unique in that it stars Jane's fingers, and was filmed entirely on a handmade cardboard set with multiple moving parts -- all in the one take. As I've said before, Jane Lui is a musical mad genius.

Last week marked Bruce Lee's 75th birthday. To celebrate the occasion, BAIT joined forces with Onituska Tiger and Bruce Lee Enterprises for a special release of two different limited edition sneakers, inspired by the design originally made famous by the yellow-and-black pair worn by the martial arts legend in Game of Death.

The navy/white Corsair - Jeet Kune Do ($120) and the yellow/black Colorado 85 - Legend ($160), both branded with the special Bruce Lee 75th anniversary logo, were released on November 27 at BAIT chapter stores and via online raffle. If you were too slow -- like me -- to cop a pair, I regret to inform you that they're sold out from the BAIT online store. (You might be able to fetch a pair for a hefty price tag on eBay.)
