Sadly, to some people, two kids enjoying a basketball game will always be just be a couple of "chinks."



Hey, Yahoo! Great job on the new sports app. That "loop" feature is all sorts of meme-making fun. It's just too bad you didn't quite account for the fact that a lot of your users are complete assholes, like the racist piece of shit who created the image above and shared it on the app Saturday night. (I've blocked out the kids' faces.)

Allow me to explain. Yahoo! Sports recently introduced its newly redesigned mobile app, including a "Loop" feature which allows users to create, customize and share GIFs from real time sports footage.

Disturbing news out of New York City... Over the weekend, an elderly man was hospitalized after being left bloody and violently arrested by police on the Upper West Side. His crime? Jaywalking, apparently.

Early Sunday morning, a 26-year-old woman died after being hit by a car on the far west end of 96th Street -- the third pedestrian fatality to happen on the block in eight days. By that afternoon, NYPD officers were out in full force in the area, aggressively handing out tickets to jaywalkers in an effort to discourage unsafe street crossing. In the case 84-year-old jaywalker Kang Chun Wong, the cops got waaaay too aggressive.

According to the New York Post, the trouble began when cops spotted Wong crossing against the light at the intersection of 96th Street and Broadway, and attempted to give him a ticket. There appears to have been a language barrier, and when Wong started to walk away, the situation quickly devolved into what became a bloody mess:

Action figure fans! Last summer, we got our first glimpse at McFarlane Toys' forthcoming Walking Dead Glenn action figure, modeled after actor Steven Yeun, who plays television's favorite Asian American zombie apocalypse survivor on the hit AMC show. Here's a clearer look of the final Glenn figure, which is due out next month and features a couple of differing details than the original computer-generated prototype.

That's a pretty decent likeness, and some cool details, right down to the prison riot gear vest. The figure stands five inches tall, boasts 22 points of articulation, and includes handgun with leg holster, knife with hip sheath, broken bloody pipe and -- my favorite part -- an alternate head with bloodied face.

At Ohio State University, community members are demanding justice for a student who was harassed, pepper sprayed and arrested by campus police after falling asleep at the library while trying to study.

23-year-old Yuxiang Chen, a senior math major from China, was studying late last month at the 18th Avenue Library, which is open 24 hours a day. When library staff noticed him dozing off, he was asked to leave and invited to return later. When he did, he was confronted by police, and that's when things got physical.

A language barrier seems to have been an issue.

ITASA gathers Taiwanese American students in the East Coast for a series of workshops and the opportunity to explore their identity and network with leaders in peers within the community. How I Met Your Mother creators sorry for all the racism

Hit sitcom's latest "Slap Bet" episode went full faux-riental



Outrage over this week's How I Met Your Mother, which featured some lazy stereotypes and totally awesome yellowface, has picked up steam, thanks to some widely circulated screenshots and the catchy, clever Twitter hashtag #HowIMetYourRacism. In case you missed, the episode featured a clunky tale about one of the characters seeking to learn a faux-riental slap technique. Stereotypes ensued.

As someone who's watched and enjoyed How I Met Your Mother in the past, this was disappointing. But as someone who's watched a lot of television and movies, you know, in general, it wasn't surprising. Racist shit on the teevee? Seen a lot of it. That said, you did get the show's attention.

This afternoon, How I Met Your Mother co-creator Carter Bays took to Twitter to address the negative reaction to the episode, and offered an apology of sorts:

McDonald's versus the Elderly Sitting Koreans

Flushing McDonald's is the happening hot spot for Korean seniors, much to restaurant's dismay



A McDonald's in Queens has become the unlikely site of a cranky conflict between the fast food restaurant and a group of elderly Korean patrons. The McDonald's, located in Flushing, says the group drives away business by sitting for hours. Seems like a silly thing to quarrel about, but the New York Times has taken notice:

Whether the restaurant likes it or not, that McDonald's location has become a regular gathering place for local Korean seniors -- and a growing problem for the restaurant, which says the patrons who colonize the seats on a daily basis are quashing business, taking up tables for hours. The group, however, says they are paying customers who are entitled to take their time.

The situation has reportedly escalated in recent months. Harsh words exchanged, coffee spilled, and cops called to the scene. Doesn't this McDonald's know that you don't mess with elderly Koreans?

Philadelphia woman suffers from schizophrenia

Passing this information along... In Philadelphia, police and loved ones are asking for the public's help locating a woman who suffers from schizophrenia and has been missing for nearly two weeks.

Missing Endangered Woman

Family members last saw 21-year-old Fatima Rahman on January 2 at her home in West Philadelphia. According to police, she left her medications behind and without them she'll become increasingly and avoid contact with people. She also left without her cell phone and jacket.

Rahman, who is of Bangladeshi descent, is described as 5-feet 1-inch tall, about 120 pounds with brown eyes, olive skin and shoulder-length black hair.

Oh my, moviegoers. I'm a little bummed that I can't attend the Sundance Film Festival this year. Maybe next time. One of the films I really wanted to see was the world premiere of To Be Takei, a feature documentary about Star Trek icon and human rights activist George Takei. Directed by Jennifer M. Kroot, the film follows George and his husband Brad on a star's profound trek for life, liberty and love.

What's up with the yellowface on How I Met Your Mother?

CBS sitcom's latest "Slapsgiving" episode features lots of wind chimes and shit



Catch last night's episode of How I Met Your Mother? Then I gotta ask -- what was up with all the yellowface?

The hit CBS sitcom has had an ongoing seven-year joke about a series of allocated slaps that Marshall can "collect" from Barney -- payment for losing a now-infamous season two Slap Bet. On last night's show, in an attempt to deliver a devastating second-to-last slap to Barney, Marshall explains how he mastered the "Slap of a Million Exploding Suns." This ended up being an excuse for the show to do some yellowface kungfoolery.

To learn the powerful slap, Marshall must seek the wisdom of three great masters who can teach him mighty virtues of slapistry: speed, strength and accuracy. These Kill Bill-esque "masters," of course, are played by the show's stars, Colbie Smulders, Josh Radnor and Alyson Hannigan... rocking some mild yellowface looks, oriental orientalism and random background Asians. Lots of wind chimes and shit.

At least nobody had their eyes taped back.

White House responds to petition regarding Jimmy Kimmel's "Kill everyone in China" comment

"The comments you are writing about do not reflect mainstream views of China in the United States."



Back in the fall, Jimmy Kimmel Live aired a segment called "Kids Table," in which Jimmy Kimmel sat down with precocious kids to talk about the state of the nation. During the discussion, one of the kids suggested that we "kill everyone in China." The moment made it on the air. It made a lot of people very upset.

The "kill everyone in China" comment went viral, and in addition to protests attended by thousands around the country, someone started a We the People petition calling for the Obama administration to "immediately cut the show and issue a formal apology." Since the petition surpassed 100,000 signatures -- the threshold for an official response -- the White House was compelled to release a statement on the matter.

It's pretty much what you'd expect. The White House response points out that the parties involved have already apologized, the federal government can't force ABC to remove the show, and you know, free speech and stuff:

While it began as a digital exploration of Asian American feminism, #NotYourAsianSidekick has grown to cover issues of race, ethnicity, identity, class, and culture.

White House hosting Mandarin in-language Google Hangout on January 23, 3:00pm ET

To inform the AAPI community about access to health coverage through the Affordable Care Act and the new Health Insurance Marketplace, the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders has been hosting a series of Google Hangouts in AAPI languages. Previous Hangouts have been presented in Korean and Vietnamese.

The next Hangout is in Mandarin, happening Thursday, January 23 at 3:00pm ET.

There will be a live question and answer period with Mandarin-speaking representatives from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, who will respond to your questions and provide information on how to obtain health care coverage through the new Marketplace.

Here's an interesting independent film project that could use your support... Honestly, the awesome title alone gets me on board: Low Budget Ethnic Movie. Written and directed by Daniel Yoon, and featuring a sprawling, diverse cast (naturally), the film is described as "a genre mashup film about love, success, and spiritual beliefs featuring non-threatening people of color in life-affirming situations." You gotta be at least a little bit curious.

Video shows Asiana crash victim before she was run over

Dash cam shows that firefighters were alerted to survivor Ye Meng Yuan before she was run over by a rig



The Asiana Airlines crash last July at San Francisco International Airport killed three passengers -- one from being run over by an emergency vehicle after the crash. Newly obtained camera footage reveals that the driver of the vehicle had been alerted to avoid the teenage survivor as she lay on the ground.

Fire rig alerted to Asiana victim before running her over

16-year-old Ye Meng Yuan survived the plane crash, but died after being hit by fire rigs. Dashboard camera footage obtained by the San Francisco Chronicle shows that a firefighter pointed out Yuan's body on the ground -- still alive, according to the coroner -- 15 minutes before she was run over by the truck.
