VIDEOS: Hyde Park store owner fights off gunman

'The Family Law' is Australia's answer to 'Fresh Off The Boat'

New comedy series based on Benjamin Law's memoir premieres January 14 on SBS.

Australia is getting its own TV version of Fresh Off The Boat. Based on the bestselling memoir by Benjamin Law, The Family Law is a drama-comedy series set on Queensland's Sunshine Coast over one hot summer, following "a sprawling Chinese-Australian family of seven who are unlike any you've ever met."

The Family Law unfolds in the dysfunctional and hilarious world of the Law family -- as seen through the eyes of 14-year-old Benjamin Law. As Benjamin dreams of soap opera stardom, his parents contemplate separation. Over the course of one unforgettable summer, the self-absorbed clarinet-playing teenager increasingly finds himself embroiled in other people's dramas, usually with disastrous results.

The six-episode series premieres on January 14 on SBS. [UPDATE: Episode 1 will premiere on the SBS Australia Facebook page for one weekend only starting 5:00pm (Australian time, presumably) on Friday, January 8.]

'Reflection Eternal' by Kero Uno

Los Angeles emcee's full-length debut producer album.

Los Angeles-based emcee/producer Kero Uno -- formerly known as Kero One -- recently dropped his latest full-length album Reflection Eternal, now available on Plug Label. For fans of Kero's jazzy hip hop/soul sound, the new electronic-inspired record doesn't demand too much of a spiritual leap. It's still pretty damn dope. Here, Kero takes a seat as producer, working with emcees and vocalists from around the country.

"The Grinch of Chattanooga" turns himself in

23-year-old Tony Ho was caught on camera stealing packages from porches.

Asians behaving badly... package thievery edition! Last in week in Tennessee, the suspect in a series of thefts turned himself in to police after he was caught on camera stealing packages from people's porches.

Chattanooga Grinch Turns Himself In

The cops were calling him the "Grinch of Chattanooga." 23-year-old Tony Ho was charged with theft after driving around in a minivan -- described by the police as a "wagon of thievery" -- and repeatedly stealing UPS, FedEx and post packages from porches around the Chattanooga area.

Philadelphia school cancels play after complaints of racism

Students accuse 'Thoroughly Modern Millie' of stereotypes against Asians.

A 2013 production of 'Thoroughly Modern Millie'

Props to these students for speaking out. A Philadelphia high school has dropped plans to stage the musical Thoroughly Modern Millie after students complained about the play's racist depiction of Asians.

CAPA Drops Musical After Complaints of Racism

Earlier this month, Philadelphia High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) canceled its staging of Thoroughly Modern Millie after a group of students protested against the production and its "disturbing stereotypes against Asians," including white actors appearing in yellowface.

Disney World's 'Big Hero 6' meet-and-greet drops Hiro Hamada

Theme park eliminates the only Asian male character from its popular meet-and-greet attraction.

Big Hero 6 fans heading to Walt Disney World hoping to meet and snap a photo with a real-life Baymax and Hiro Hamada are going to be disappointed. The park has dropped Hiro from the meet-and-greet.

The Baymax meet-and-greet moves to Epcot, kicks out pal Hiro

Visitors to The Magic of Disney Animation attraction used to be able meet with Baymax and Hiro, the stars of Marvel/Disney's 2014 animated superhero adventure Big Hero 6, inside a recreation of Hiro's garage workshop. The meet-and-greet has reportedly moved to a new location at Epcot's Character Spot, but now it's just Baymax, the puffy inflatable health robot, greeting guests alone. No more Hiro.

As the Orlando Weekly points out, Hiro was unique in that he was an Asian, male face character -- played by an Asian actor -- with a permanent meet-and-greet location. What a bummer they've booted him.

Here are a couple of videos, shot last year, of Hiro and Baymax in action:

Old school Star Wars fans duel in vintage home movie

CAAM's Memories to Light presents Brian and Lynda Gee, circa 1978.

The Center for Asian American Media's Memories to Light program is a national, community-sourced initiative to collect, preserve and share the home movies (on 16mm, 8mm, and super 8mm film) and experiences of Asian American communities from across the United States from the 1920s through the 1980s.

In celebration of the holidays and the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (heard of it?) CAAM recently shared this special clip from the Gee family movie collection. Shot at the Gee family home in Sacramento (circa 1978), the scene shows O.G. Star Wars fans Brian and Lynda battling it out as Darth Vader and C3P0.

The clip is set to The Tonight Show's a cappella rendition of the Star Wars theme. Check it out:

Born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore, Chin made his way to the United States, eventually settling in San Francisco. Chin's prolific writing -- he wrote and published seven books -- often explored his identity as a gay Asian American.

All of the Asians in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS

Earlier this year San Diego Comic-Con's panel for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, two Asian American Star Wars fans stepped up to the microphone in Hall H to ask J.J. Abrams if there would be Asians in any of the upcoming Star Wars movies. To which the director replied, yes, "there are Asians in this film."

Well, the Force has awoken and the film is here. Chances are, you were among the faithful masses who contributed to Episode VII's galactic record-breaking box office take this weekend. Hell, I was there opening night. And we got to see if, indeed, there were Asians a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

There were. There are. I have seen the movie twice now. And so here is an approximate list of all the Asians in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, because that's what we like to do around here.

REQUISITE SPOILER WARNING: The rest of this post contains spoiler-y details pertaining to the plot and character of the latest Star Wars movie, currently in theaters. If you have not yet seen the movie, and/or do not wish to know such information, stop reading now. You have been warned.

The Slants win court battle over band name trademark

Federal Circuit Court rules the government cannot deny trademarks for being "disparaging."

Victory for The Slants! The Portland-based rock band, who have been embroiled in long-running legal struggle for the right to trademark their name, has scored a big victory in the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.

Government Can't Deny Trademarks Over Offensive Names, Appeals Court Rules

The Slants' founder and frontman Simon Tam has been locked in a widely-publicized six-year battle with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, which refused to trademark his band's name on the grounds that "slants" can be interpreted as a racial slur. At issue in the case was Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act, which allows the USPTO to deny or cancel a trademark if it is "disparaging" of persons, institutions or national symbols.

On Tuesday, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that the band's name is private speech, and the USPTO's refusal to grant the "Slants" mark is a violation of Tam's First Amendment rights.

"It is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment that the government may not penalize private speech merely because it disapproves of the message it conveys," writes Federal Circuit Judge Kimberly Ann Moore. "That principle governs even when the government's message-discriminatory penalty is less than a prohibition."

'Allegiance' has been saving a seat for Donald Trump

George Takei calls on Trump to denounce racial/religious profiling and invites him to his Broadway musical.

Donald Trump has a standing open invitation to attend a performance of the Broadway musical Allegiance, issued by star George Takei himself. They've even been saving a seat for him at every performance.

Last week, Takei issued a video response to Trump's recent comments regarding both the Muslim community and Japanese American internment camps. The Republican presidential candidate called for a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. and could not definitively say whether or not he would have supported the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. His supporters seem to think it was a good idea.

Sometimes racism has perfect timing

Sikh man's TV interview about racism gets interrupted by someone yelling "F*ck you, terrorist!"

This is sadly unsurprising in every way. A Sikh man was giving a TV interview on the street, talking about the racism he had experienced, when someone driving by in a passing car yelled "Fuck you, terrorist!"

Darsh Preet Singh has made headlines as the first turbaned Sikh American to play basketball in the NCAA, facing a considerable degree of ignorance, bigotry and discrimination along the way -- including a racist meme that recently went viral, putting him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.

Singh, who was born and raised in Texas, was in the middle of an interview with NBC 5 in Dallas, standing out on the street and sharing about his experiences, when someone yelled at him from a passing car:

Angry Reader of the Week: Eugene Lee Yang

"If you Google me, you'll inevitably see my butt. Sorry, Mom."

Hey, folks! It's that time again. I am pleased to present the Angry Reader of the Week, spotlighting you, the very special readers of this website. Over the years, I've been able to connect with a lot of cool folks, and this is a way of showing some appreciation and attention to the people who help make this blog what it is. This week's Angry Reader is Eugene Lee Yang.

Jeremy Lin drops season-high 35 points on the Raptors

Lin leads Charlotte to 109-99 victory over Toronto in overtime.

It wasn't quite the return of the L-word, but it was definitely something. Jeremy Lin scored a season-high 35 points on Thursday, helping the Charlotte Hornets beat the Toronto Raptors 109-99 in overtime.

Lin, Hornets pull away to top Raptors in overtime

Lin, who got the start when Nicholas Batum couldn't play because of an illness, had his best game of the season, with 35 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Don't call it Linsanity -- this is a 27-year-old Jeremy in his sixth year in the NBA, making an impact in his smaller role with Charlotte.

Here's a video with all of Jeremy's highlights from the evening:

Hollis Wong-Wear is nobody's sidekick

"To be immediately labeled in boldface as a white guy's sidekick is fundamentally insulting."

Seattle-based singer/songwriter and creative producer Hollis Wong-Wear has served as tour manager for Blue Scholars, sang the Grammy-nominated hook on Macklemore's "White Walls," and recently released her latest EP Love Notes with her electronic group The Flavr Blue. She is an artist. She is a hustler. She is a badass.

She is not, however, anybody's sidekick.

Tell that to the Seattle Times editor who bestowed "sidekick" status on Hollis with this headline: "Warmth and intimacy from The Flavr Blue, with Macklemore sidekick Hollis Wong-Wear." The headline has since been changed to remove the "sidekick" reference, but not before Hollis noticed and called it out in a Facebook post.

"To be immediately labeled in boldface as a white guy's sidekick is fundamentally insulting."

Indian American student arrested over alleged bomb threat

12-year-old Armaan Singh Sarai says his classmate falsely accused him of having a bomb in his backpack.

Aw, hell. Is this another Clock Kid? In Texas, a 12-year-old Indian American middle school student spent three days in a juvenile detention center after a bully allegedly told teachers he had a bomb hidden in his backpack.

Arlington police say boy made hoax bomb threat; family blames classmate's prank

Armaan Singh Sarai, a seventh grader at Nichols Junior High School in Arlington, was arrested last Friday on a charge of making a terroristic threat after a classmate reported he had threatened to blow up the school.

Arlington police say Armaan admitted that he had mentioned a bomb and insisted he was only joking, but making a terror threat, even in jest, warranted taking him into custody.

But Armaan's family says it's the classmate who was behind the prank that got Armaan handcuffed, detained and suspended from school.

Toronto woman arrested in fatal stabbing

40-year-old Rohinie Bisesar faces murder charge in unprovoked knife attack on Rosemarie Junor.

In Toronto, a suspect has been arrested in the unprovoked stabbing of a woman last week at a downtown drug store. Attempted murder charges were upgraded to second-degree murder after the victim died of her injuries.

Murder charge laid in 'unprovoked' Toronto stabbing

40-year--old Rohinie Bisesar is accused of fatally stabbing 28-year-old Rosemarie Junor last Friday at a Shoppers Drug Mart in Toronto's PATH network. According to investigators, Bisesar went into the store armed with a knife, approached Junor and stabbed her without apparent provocation.

Junor was taken to a trauma center with life-threatening injuries. She died on Wednesday night.

Oh Hell No: Yellowface in the 'Absolutely Fabulous' movie

White actress Janette Tough plays a Japanese character named "Huki Muki."

Oh hell no. The year is 20-f*cking-15. Is there any legit reason for a movie to put a performer in yellowface? No. That shit is racist. But that's what the upcoming Absolutely Fabulous movie is doing. They've got a white actor playing an Asian character -- makeup and everything. Who thought this was a good idea?

Absolutely Fabulous: The Movie under fire for casting Janette Tough as Japanese fashion designer

The big-screen adaptation of Ab Fab, based on the popular British sitcom, feature Scottish comedian Janette Tough in a cameo as a fictional male Japanese fashion designer called "Huki Muki." The character's appearance and styling appear to be inspired by the look of real-life Japanese artist and writer Yayoi Kusama.

This is yellowface, straight up. White actor playing an Asian person. It's a fairly simple, racist concept.

The casting has drawn the ire of comedian/actress Margaret Cho, who professes to be an Ab Fab fan, but is definitely not down with the racist mockery happening in this movie.

She took to Twitter to put that shit on blast:

Teenager slashed in the face on her way to school

Police are searching for a masked man who slashed a 16-year-old in Queens.

What the hell is going on in New York with these random knife attacks? In Queens, police are looking for the masked man who slashed a 16-year-old girl in the face while she was on her way to school.

Teenage Girl Slashed on Her Way to School

Police say the 11th grader, who is an exchange student from China, was walking to school in Whitestone on Wednesday morning when she was attacked by a man wearing a surgical mask and gloves.

The man approached the victim from behind, pushed her and slashed her in the face twice with a box cutter, once from her ear to throat and another part of the face. He had apparently been following her.

A nearby resident's security camera showed the suspect chasing the girl from behind and then running away:

Family of girl who killed herself sues school

The family of Emilie Olsen has filed a federal wrongful lawsuit against he Fairfield City School District, claiming that school officials knew about the constant bullying, but did not do enough to stop it.

"Emilie and her parents tried to end the bullying and repeatedly pleaded with certain defendants to help," according to the lawsuit. "Defendants failed to stop the bullying, and it continued."

Man attacks restaurant workers in anti-Muslim tirade

26-year-old Robert Murino arrested on hate crime charges.

There have been so many of these incidents lately, it's hard to keep them straight. In New York, a man was arrested on hate crime charges for assaulting South Asian restaurant workers and throwing chairs into a glass partition after demanding to know if the employees were Muslim.

'Muslim motherf*cker': NY man launches glass-smashing attack on cafe staffers

The incident occurred last week at the Salt & Pepper restaurant in Herald Square, where 26-year-old Robert Murino ordered a slice of pizza then began questioning workers -- who hail from Pakistan, India and Bangladesh -- about their religion and opinions of ISIS, and called an employee a "Muslim motherfucker."

Part of the incident was caught on camera. Murino can be seen reaching across the counter and slapping an employee in the face. Later, he is seen picking up chairs and smashing them into glass partitions.

Robber calls store clerk 'terrorist,' shoots him in the face

Police are investigating the robbery as a hate crime.

What the hell is going on, America? This shit is out of control. In Michigan, a robber called an Indian convenience store clerk a "terrorist" and accused him of being in ISIS before shooting him the face. Police say they are investigating the robbery as a hate crime.

Robber called store clerk 'terrorist' before shooting him in face, worker says

Thankfully, the victim survived and is expected to recover.

On Saturday night, an armed robber entered Bottlenecks Food and Drink Shop in Grand Rapids and demanded money from the 34-year-old store worker, who is of Indian descent. Then the robber led him to a back storage room where he put the barrel of a long gun into the worker's mouth.

Sikh football fans harassed for wearing turbans

Also, someone called the cops on them for being brown and standing next to a car.

More idiocy in the name of "safety." In San Diego, three Sikh football fans say they were harassed and nearly barred by security from entering Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday because they were wearing turbans.

Fans: We were hassled at Qualcomm stadium over our turbans

Varinder Malhi and his friends drove seven hours from Fresno to see the Denver Broncos play the San Diego Chargers. They were decked out in Broncos jerseys, hats and other fan gear, right down to the color-coordinated turbans they were wearing in accordance with their Sikh faith.

But when they tried to enter the stadium, security guards told Malhi and his friends that they couldn't enter the game unless they removed their turbans. They were ultimately allowed in, but were warned they wouldn't be able to wear their turbans again if they ever returned to the stadium.

On top of that, some overly nervous fan apparently got jumpy and called the cops when they saw Malhi and his turbaned friends in the parking lot, rummaging in the trunk of a car. They were just putting a bag back in the car when they realized they couldn't bring it inside the stadium.

School to be renamed for Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz

Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School will be the nation's first school named in honor of Filipino Americans.

A mural in Los Angeles' Historic Filipinotown honors Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz.

This week, a Bay Area middle school will be officially renamed in honor of labor leaders Larry Itliong and Philip Vera Cruz. It is believed to be the first school in the nation to be named in honor of Filipino Americans.

Union City school first in nation named for Filipino-Americans

On Friday, Alvarado Middle School in Union City will be renamed Itliong-Vera Cruz Middle School. Itlong and Vera Cruz were key figures in the west coast labor movement, working with Cesar Chavez in the 1960s to organize agricultural laborers and improve working conditions.

The name change was approved by the school board in 2013 after a vigorous community debate over whether to retain the name Alvarado, in honor of a 19th century Mexican governor.

Police officials were investigating Daniel Holtzclaw before final attack, suit claims

On Thursday, a jury convicted Holtzclaw of 18 of 36 charges of rape and sexual assault. Holtzclaw was accused of assaulting 13 women, all black, between late 2013 and June 18, 2014. Happy Holidays from 'Dr. Ken'

Episode 108: "The Master Scheduler" airs Friday, December 11 at 8:30pm on ABC

On the Dr. Ken winter finale, Ken turns to lying, begging and bribing to try and get time off for the holidays.

Inspired by executive producer/star Ken Jeong's real life and career as a medical doctor, the multi-camera comedy Dr. Ken follows Dr. Ken Park, a physician with bad bedside manner trying to juggle medicine and being a family man to his wife and kids -- and not quite succeeding on either front.

Dr. Ken also stars the awesome Suzy Nakamura as Ken's wife Allison, Krista Marie Yu as daughter Molly, and Albert Tsai as his son Dave. They're all great. The cast is rounded out by Tisha Campbell-Martin as Damona, Jonathan Slavin as Clark, Kate Simses as Julie and Dave Foley as Pat.
