Gas station owner fights off armed robber with his shoe
Armed with nothing more than footwear and guts, 58-year-old Amrik Singh thwarted a masked gunman.
File under badass. Folks, let us give it up for the New York gas station owner who successfully thwarted an attempted armed robbery by throwing his shoe at the gunman and chasing him out of his store.

'The Family Law' is Australia's answer to 'Fresh Off The Boat'
New comedy series based on Benjamin Law's memoir premieres January 14 on SBS.
Australia is getting its own TV version of Fresh Off The Boat. Based on the bestselling memoir by Benjamin Law, The Family Law is a drama-comedy series set on Queensland's Sunshine Coast over one hot summer, following "a sprawling Chinese-Australian family of seven who are unlike any you've ever met."
The Family Law unfolds in the dysfunctional and hilarious world of the Law family -- as seen through the eyes of 14-year-old Benjamin Law. As Benjamin dreams of soap opera stardom, his parents contemplate separation. Over the course of one unforgettable summer, the self-absorbed clarinet-playing teenager increasingly finds himself embroiled in other people's dramas, usually with disastrous results.

We know that the upcoming second season of Marvel's Daredevil will introduce Elodie Yung as Elektra, one of the original comic book's most popular characters. EW just dropped our first look photo of the Netflix series' mercenary assassin -- albeit without any weapons or her signature scarlet costume.

Los Angeles-based emcee/producer Kero Uno -- formerly known as Kero One -- recently dropped his latest full-length album Reflection Eternal, now available on Plug Label. For fans of Kero's jazzy hip hop/soul sound, the new electronic-inspired record doesn't demand too much of a spiritual leap. It's still pretty damn dope. Here, Kero takes a seat as producer, working with emcees and vocalists from around the country.

The Baymax meet-and-greet moves to Epcot, kicks out pal Hiro
Visitors to The Magic of Disney Animation attraction used to be able meet with Baymax and Hiro, the stars of Marvel/Disney's 2014 animated superhero adventure Big Hero 6, inside a recreation of Hiro's garage workshop. The meet-and-greet has reportedly moved to a new location at Epcot's Character Spot, but now it's just Baymax, the puffy inflatable health robot, greeting guests alone. No more Hiro.
As the Orlando Weekly points out, Hiro was unique in that he was an Asian, male face character -- played by an Asian actor -- with a permanent meet-and-greet location. What a bummer they've booted him.

Attackers yelled "Why are you here?"
In Fresno, police are offering a reward for information leading to the arrest of two men who hit a 68-year-old Sikh man with their truck, then beat him on the street, yelling, "Why are you here?"

Amrik Singh Bal, who wears a turban and beard in observance of his Sikh faith, was standing at an intersection in west-central Fresno, waiting for a ride to work early Saturday morning when two men in a car started yelling obscenities at him. Bal tried to cross the street to get away, but the attackers backed up the car and hit him. Then they got out and beat Bal before fleeing the scene.
During the attack, one of the suspects asked him, "Why are you here?"

Old school Star Wars fans duel in vintage home movie
CAAM's Memories to Light presents Brian and Lynda Gee, circa 1978.
The Center for Asian American Media's Memories to Light program is a national, community-sourced initiative to collect, preserve and share the home movies (on 16mm, 8mm, and super 8mm film) and experiences of Asian American communities from across the United States from the 1920s through the 1980s.
In celebration of the holidays and the premiere of Star Wars: The Force Awakens (heard of it?) CAAM recently shared this special clip from the Gee family movie collection. Shot at the Gee family home in Sacramento (circa 1978), the scene shows O.G. Star Wars fans Brian and Lynda battling it out as Darth Vader and C3P0.
The clip is set to The Tonight Show's a cappella rendition of the Star Wars theme. Check it out:

Award-winning writer was a prominent figure in the Bay Area's literary scene.
Sad news out of San Francisco. Award-winning writer and poet Justin Chin, a prominent figure in the Bay Area literary scene, was taken off life support Tuesday after suffering a massive stroke last week.

On Friday, a neighbor discovered Chin, 46, unconscious after hearing a loud sound from his apartment. After several days in the intensive care unit, doctors said Chin was unlikely to recover, and his family requested to remove him from his ventilator, according to friends.
Born in Malaysia and raised in Singapore, Chin made his way to the United States, eventually settling in San Francisco. Chin's prolific writing -- he wrote and published seven books -- often explored his identity as a gay Asian American.

All of the Asians in 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens'

Earlier this year San Diego Comic-Con's panel for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, two Asian American Star Wars fans stepped up to the microphone in Hall H to ask J.J. Abrams if there would be Asians in any of the upcoming Star Wars movies. To which the director replied, yes, "there are Asians in this film."
Well, the Force has awoken and the film is here. Chances are, you were among the faithful masses who contributed to Episode VII's galactic record-breaking box office take this weekend. Hell, I was there opening night. And we got to see if, indeed, there were Asians a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.
There were. There are. I have seen the movie twice now. And so here is an approximate list of all the Asians in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, because that's what we like to do around here.

The Slants win court battle over band name trademark
Federal Circuit Court rules the government cannot deny trademarks for being "disparaging."
Victory for The Slants! The Portland-based rock band, who have been embroiled in long-running legal struggle for the right to trademark their name, has scored a big victory in the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.
Government Can't Deny Trademarks Over Offensive Names, Appeals Court Rules
The Slants' founder and frontman Simon Tam has been locked in a widely-publicized six-year battle with the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, which refused to trademark his band's name on the grounds that "slants" can be interpreted as a racial slur. At issue in the case was Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act, which allows the USPTO to deny or cancel a trademark if it is "disparaging" of persons, institutions or national symbols.
On Tuesday, the Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that the band's name is private speech, and the USPTO's refusal to grant the "Slants" mark is a violation of Tam's First Amendment rights.
"It is a bedrock principle underlying the First Amendment that the government may not penalize private speech merely because it disapproves of the message it conveys," writes Federal Circuit Judge Kimberly Ann Moore. "That principle governs even when the government's message-discriminatory penalty is less than a prohibition."

'Allegiance' has been saving a seat for Donald Trump
George Takei calls on Trump to denounce racial/religious profiling and invites him to his Broadway musical.
Donald Trump has a standing open invitation to attend a performance of the Broadway musical Allegiance, issued by star George Takei himself. They've even been saving a seat for him at every performance.
Last week, Takei issued a video response to Trump's recent comments regarding both the Muslim community and Japanese American internment camps. The Republican presidential candidate called for a ban on all Muslims entering the U.S. and could not definitively say whether or not he would have supported the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II. His supporters seem to think it was a good idea.
Donald Trump has a standing open invitation to attend a performance of the Broadway musical Allegiance, issued by star George Takei himself. They've even been saving a seat for him at every performance.

Darsh Preet Singh has made headlines as the first turbaned Sikh American to play basketball in the NCAA, facing a considerable degree of ignorance, bigotry and discrimination along the way -- including a racist meme that recently went viral, putting him in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons.
Singh, who was born and raised in Texas, was in the middle of an interview with NBC 5 in Dallas, standing out on the street and sharing about his experiences, when someone yelled at him from a passing car:

It wasn't quite the return of the L-word, but it was definitely something. Jeremy Lin scored a season-high 35 points on Thursday, helping the Charlotte Hornets beat the Toronto Raptors 109-99 in overtime.
Lin, Hornets pull away to top Raptors in overtime
Lin, who got the start when Nicholas Batum couldn't play because of an illness, had his best game of the season, with 35 points, five rebounds, four assists and two blocks. Don't call it Linsanity -- this is a 27-year-old Jeremy in his sixth year in the NBA, making an impact in his smaller role with Charlotte.

In Toronto, a suspect has been arrested in the unprovoked stabbing of a woman last week at a downtown drug store. Attempted murder charges were upgraded to second-degree murder after the victim died of her injuries.

The big-screen adaptation of Ab Fab, based on the popular British sitcom, feature Scottish comedian Janette Tough in a cameo as a fictional male Japanese fashion designer called "Huki Muki." The character's appearance and styling appear to be inspired by the look of real-life Japanese artist and writer Yayoi Kusama.
This is yellowface, straight up. White actor playing an Asian person. It's a fairly simple, racist concept.
The casting has drawn the ire of comedian/actress Margaret Cho, who professes to be an Ab Fab fan, but is definitely not down with the racist mockery happening in this movie.
She took to Twitter to put that shit on blast:

"Emilie and her parents tried to end the bullying and repeatedly pleaded with certain defendants to help," according to the lawsuit. "Defendants failed to stop the bullying, and it continued."

Margaret Cho is returning to television! The comedian/actress will star as a version of herself in the hourlong marijuana-themed family dramedy Highland, which is in development for Amazon Prime.

In Highland, after a court ordered rehab, Cho gets a chance to start over but has to move in with her dysfunctional family who now runs a pot dispensary. Sounds like fun for the whole family!

There have been so many of these incidents lately, it's hard to keep them straight. In New York, a man was arrested on hate crime charges for assaulting South Asian restaurant workers and throwing chairs into a glass partition after demanding to know if the employees were Muslim.

Paramount just dropped the first trailer for Star Trek Beyond, with the veteran Fast & Furious director now helming the adventures of Kirk and Co. in the bigger and badder latest installment of the space adventure franchise. From the looks of things, the U.S.S. Enterprise is in pretty bad shape.

More idiocy in the name of "safety." In San Diego, three Sikh football fans say they were harassed and nearly barred by security from entering Qualcomm Stadium on Sunday because they were wearing turbans.
Fans: We were hassled at Qualcomm stadium over our turbans
Varinder Malhi and his friends drove seven hours from Fresno to see the Denver Broncos play the San Diego Chargers. They were decked out in Broncos jerseys, hats and other fan gear, right down to the color-coordinated turbans they were wearing in accordance with their Sikh faith.
But when they tried to enter the stadium, security guards told Malhi and his friends that they couldn't enter the game unless they removed their turbans. They were ultimately allowed in, but were warned they wouldn't be able to wear their turbans again if they ever returned to the stadium.
On top of that, some overly nervous fan apparently got jumpy and called the cops when they saw Malhi and his turbaned friends in the parking lot, rummaging in the trunk of a car. They were just putting a bag back in the car when they realized they couldn't bring it inside the stadium.

This free event will feature representatives from the White House Initiative on Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders, local elected officials, legal services, Khmer translation, and much more. It's happening Wednesday, December 16 at the Cal Rec Center in Long Beach.

According to a civil lawsuit filed against Oklahoma City, police officials were investigating serial rapist cop Daniel Holtzclaw six weeks before his final attack, but allowed him to remain on regular duty during the inquiry.

On Thursday, a jury convicted Holtzclaw of 18 of 36 charges of rape and sexual assault. Holtzclaw was accused of assaulting 13 women, all black, between late 2013 and June 18, 2014. But according to legal documents, the sex crimes unit began investigating Holtzclaw well over a month before his final assault.
The timing would mean that Holtzclaw attacked half of the women he has been convicted of assaulting while he was under investigation for sexual assault.

Dr. Ken also stars the awesome Suzy Nakamura as Ken's wife Allison, Krista Marie Yu as daughter Molly, and Albert Tsai as his son Dave. They're all great. The cast is rounded out by Tisha Campbell-Martin as Damona, Jonathan Slavin as Clark, Kate Simses as Julie and Dave Foley as Pat.

Sacramento-based community organizer and spoken word artist Fong Tran recently released his newest spoken word video with close collaborator Chaz Ashley, entitled "Don't Be an Activist." Wait, what?
It is, in fact, a loving ode to their fellow activists and agents of change.
"This video is in honor of the people that choose to stick out by speaking up, in honor of all the folks that choose the hard path because they understand it's the right one," Fong says. "We hope you find fuel from this piece."
