david chiu announces run for san francisco mayor

This morning in San Francisco, Board of Supervisors President David Chiu officially announced that he's running for mayor. Chiu made the announcement on the steps outside City Hall, where more than a hundred supporters were gathered, and then headed to the clerk's office to file his declaration of intent to run.

If he's already previously announced that he's going announce it, is it really a true announcement? Whatever. I guess this makes it official. Chiu now joins an already-crowded field of major candidates making run for San Francisco's mayor:Chiu announces run for mayor. The announcement had been anticipated for a while:

the chin chens teaser trailer

A little while back, I wrote about an The Chin Chens, an Asian American-themed sitcom in the works from an Atlanta-based production company.

The show, which started production last fall, promised hilarity in the form of the Cosby-esque members of a Chinese/Vietnamese American family who own a successful chain of nail salons and Chinese restaurants. I give you the recently released teaser trailer:

Julie Su appointed as California's Labor Commissioner

Last week, I received the awesome news that Julie Su, litigation director at the Asian Pacific American Legal Center in Los Angeles, has been appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to be California's Labor Commissioner.

She was already known as a fierce labor law warrior, but this appointment takes her asskicking to a whole other level. You dare violate California's labor laws? Face the battle-tested and state-approved justice of Julie Su! Here's APALC's press release:

police searching for suspect in teen's fatal stabbing

This news is a couple of weeks old, but I didn't want to let it slip by... In San Francisco, police are looking for the man responsible for the February 8 murder of 16-year-old Victor Zheng, who was attacked and fatally stabbed while walking on the street in Ingleside: Teenage boy stabbed to death on S.F. street.

Zheng was walking with a friend when a man approached and punched him numerous times without provocation, then stabbed him the chest. It sounds completely senseless. Last week, police released a sketch of Zheng's killer, who is described as an Asian man, 18 to 19 years old:

guest post: the military wants us to say sorry

Last weekend, I had the opportunity to attend and participate in the ECAASU 2011 at UMass Amherst, the oldest and largest Asian American student conference... where some very interesting stuff went down. When I arrived at Amherst late Friday night, the conference was already buzzing about it...

Lai Wa Wu, program coordinator at MIT Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program, and Professor Vijay Prashad, Director of the International Studies Program at Trinity College, were both keynote speakers at the conference. By the end the weekend, they had both emphatically publicly called out the U.S. military, the coast guard and CIA -- "war-makers" -- and their funding of ECAASU.

This, of course, did not sit well with the conference's armed forces representatives -- many of whom were sitting in the audience, in uniform. I was present for Vijay's address, and while it was a tense moment ("awkward," as Professor Prashad put it) I felt it needed to be said, and both speakers were well within their right to speak out on this matter.

In the ensuing fallout, the military has apparently threatened not to pay their promised contribution to the conference, and ECAASU's National Board has sent out emails disassociating itself from the keynotes' remarks. Lai Wa Wu and Vijay Prashad have responded to the controversy with this essay in Counterpunch. I'm reprinting it here with their permission:

UPDATE: The ECAASU National Board has issued a response to Lai Wa Wu and Vijay Prashad's essay. I've also re-posted it at the bottom.

four arrested in asian-on-asian hate crime

Oh man, this is insane. In Los Angeles, four Korean American men were arrested in connection with the robbery and assault of a Chinese American man outside a restaurant in Rowland Heights, in what authorities described as a hate crime: Chinese American man beaten by Korean Americans in alleged hate-crime attack, authorities say.

Yeah. Asian on Asian violence. F#@%ing idiots. The four suspects, Jachin Yi, Peter Kim, Jae Du, and Hwan Huh, are allegedly connected with the Korean American street gang "Asian Mafia Assassins," based in eastern Los Angeles County. They attacked this guy for no apparent reason, other than the fact that he was Chinese:

ameya pawar is chicago's first asian american alderman

Some cool political news out of Chicago... This week, in something of a surprise victory, voters on the Northwest Side helped make history and elected 30-year-old Ameya Pawar as the city's first Asian American alderman: In 47th Ward, a long-shot outsider relishes his victory.

Pawar, the son of Indian immigrants, entered the race last year as a long-shot outsider against 35-year-old incumbent Eugene Schulter. As a relative unknown, with considerably less campaign money than his opponents, his chances of winning were slim. But things turned when Schulter unexpectedly dropped out of the race:

cbs pilot two broke girls: seriously, you named the asian character "rice lee"?

Oh boy. So the other day, I get these audition sides passed along to me, for Two Broke Girls, the new CBS comedy from Sex and the City creator Michael Patrick King. The show is described as a "multi-camera comedy about two 22-year-old girls who tackle life in New York: two broke girls, one expensive city."

The show -- at least, the pilot episode -- features an Asian character named Han Lee, described in the script as 33, Korean Born, Lovable, Thin Man; Thick Accent. And it's pretty much downhill from there.

From what I've seen, the running joke appears to be that Han Lee adopts a new, more "American" name ("Bryce Lee" -- which at some point becomes "Rice") and is constantly getting his funny-but-lovable bad English corrected. I'm reposting relevant parts of the script below:

why tiger mothers are superior (during a zombie outbreak)

You've heard all the reactions. You might have strong opinions, one way or another, about Amy Chua's controversial Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother, or Tiger Mother parenting in general. But have you considered tiger mothering in the context of surviving of a zombie outbreak? I mean, really -- have you?

In this recent Wired piece, Roger Ma, author of The Zombie Combat Manual, has a point by point explanation of Why Tiger Mothers Are Superior (During A Zombie Outbreak). Lots of reasons you never really considered... something you might find out the hard way, at the cold hands of the undead. For example:

ted lieu easily wins state senate seat

Almost forgot to mention this little bit of political news out of Southern California... In last week's special election, former assemblyman Ted Lieu easily defeated Bob Valentine to win the state's 28th Senate District race, with 57.1 percent of the vote: Lieu easily wins South Bay state senate seat.

The senate seat was vacated when former Sen. Jenny Oropeza died in office last year of complications from a blood clot. Valentine, who posed the only serious challenge to Lieu, collected just 25.1 percent of the vote. Under new election rules, since Lieu won with a majority, no runoff was required:

driver killed, ten injured in church youth group bus crash

Terrible, tragic news out of Southern California... Earlier today, a bus carrying a Korean church youth group home from a weekend retreat collided with another vehicle and crashed down a steep embankment, killing the driver and injuring at least ten passengers: Driver dies, 10 seriously hurt as bus careens down a mountainside near Lake Arrowhead.

The bus, belonging to Light of Love Mission Church in Pasadena, was headed down a windy, treacherous part of California 189 outside Twin Peaks in the Lake Arrowhead region when it lost control, collided with an SUV traveling in the other direction, and plunged 25 feet down the mountain into a grove of trees:

cyclist finishes race with nine-inch splinter stuck in his leg

How badass is Azizulhasni Awang? Over the weekend, the Malaysian cyclist crossed the finish line at the Track Cycling World Cup with a 7.8-inch piece of wood sticking through his left calf... and walked away (well, not quite literally) with a bronze medal: Cyclist has wood removed from leg after crash.

You want to know what tough means? Awang was competing in the Men's Keirin Final at the National Cycling Centre in Manchester, England, when he got into a high speed crash, sending a huge-ass splinter through his leg. But he managed to remount his bike and finish the race:

petition for asian american studies at rutgers university

I recently heard from several students about the ongoing struggle to establish a substantial Asian American Studies program at Rutgers University. To that end, dedicated students have been circulating an online petition: Petition for Asian American Studies Program at Rutgers University.

Rutgers' student body is roughly 25% Asian -- the school's largest minority population. Yet, as things currently stand, the school has an Africana studies program, an African American studies program, a Latino studies program, an East Asian and South Asian studies program... but no Asian American studies program. Here's what the petitioners want:

the bizarre behavior of congressman david wu

What in the world...? Yo, what the hell is going on with Rep. David Wu? looking for a filmmaker to produce documentary on soviet koreans

Got this unusual but fascinating request from a longtime reader... Jon Chang has spent the last five years collecting extensive interviews, photographs and other research on the Korean experience in Soviet Russia, and is looking for a filmmaker to produce a documentary on the amazing stories of these Soviet Koreans. Jon explains:

postsecret: extremely aware of my race

PostSecret is an ongoing community art project where people mail in their secrets anonymously on one side of a postcard. Here's another interesting sort-of Asian-themed one. I'm pretty sure this is a sentiment a lot of college students have experienced -- myself included.

Don't know if the person in the photo is the secret-sharer, or someone else entirely. (I do hope this photo was used with permission.) To be honest, the person I'm really concerned about is the faceless individual wearing the kitty cat vest. (Thanks, Lola.)
