tom cruise stars in all you need is kill, minus all that japanese-ness

This crazy-ass photo is our first look at Tom Cruise in the upcoming movie All You Need is Kill, based on the Japanese sci-fi novel by Hiroshi Sakurazaka: Tom Cruise Dons a Robot Suit for Doug Liman’s 'All You Need is Kill.'

In the book, armored soldier Keiji Kiriya is recruited to fight alien invaders and dies on the battlefield, only to find himself reborn each morning to fight and die again and again. In the movie -- adapted for American sensibilities, of course -- Keiji is now Cage, played by Tom effin' Cruise:

virginia's controversial race-based achievement goals

Whaaaaat. As part of Virginia's waiver to opt out of mandates set out in the No Child Left Behind law, the state's board of education has created a controversial new set of performance goals with significant disparities between subgroups -- higher for white and Asian kids than for blacks, Latinos and students with disabilities: Firestorm Erupts Over Virginia's Education Goals.

Based on students' test scores in reading and math, the board of education proposed new passing rates. In math, the new acceptable passing rate is 82 percent for Asian students, 68 percent for whites, 52 percent for Latinos, 45 percent for blacks and 33 percent for kids with disabilities.

Understandably, the plan has drawn controversy, particularly from the state legislature's black caucus:

kollaboration star 2012 - the finale, november 16

This is it! Kollaboration, the world-famous Asian American community talent showcase, presents its all new show, Kollaboration Star 2012 - The Finale, as part of its collaboration with the Asian lifestyle cable network Mnet. It's happening Friday, November 16 at the Alex Theatre in Glendale, California.

Mnet followed the Kollaboration movement to twelve local competitions around the country, filming the shows and their winners for an original television series, Kollaboration Star 2012. From these winners, six semi-finalists will be selected by a public online poll and one finalist will be chosen to represent their cities at the finale, which will ultimately air on Mnet.

Here are some more details about the show:

sign the petition to establish an asian/asian american resource and cultural center at purdue university

Here's something I can definitely get behind. I've heard from several students about a growing movement to establish an Asian and Asian American Resource and Cultural Center at Purdue University: Time now for Asian culture center, Purdue students say.

The center would provide institutional support for the cultural and social needs of the school's significant Asian student population -- including the second-largest international student population among U.S. public universities -- which accounts for nearly a quarter of Purdue's enrollment.

Students have started an online petition that's quickly gaining momentum:

guest post: paperdoll's all or nothing china tour, day 1-2

Teresa Lee, lead singer of the New York City-based indie pop band PaperDoll, is dropping guest posts on the road during the "All or Nothing" China tour.

Obama almost ruined our tour. It's 4:30am the day after the election and we're waiting in a car for Will at Union Square. Our flight is at 7:30a out of Newark and post-Sandy, the tunnels are all closed so we don't have much room for error. I call Will, it goes straight to voicemail. We figure he's on the subway.

4:45am .... I call again - straight to voicemail. 5am...still no sign of him so we look up his roommates' phone numbers on facebook and ring them. One of them answers and we learn as suspected, Will slept through his alarm. He stayed up watching election results. As a band mate - BOOO! As an advocate of civil responsibility - I give the English immigrant a pass.

justin chon in 21 & over trailer

If you like the poster, here's the brand new trailer for the upcoming comedy 21 & Over, starring Justin Chon. He plays a straight-A college student whose 21st birthday becomes a night of chaos and debauchery. If it looks Hangover-esque, it's because it's written and directed by the guys who co-wrote The Hangover. Take a look:

Wowwwww. Saw this on io9, had to share... Fans of director Hayao Miyazaki will get a kick out of this. Artist Andrew Golden has been attempting to create photorealistic images of animated characters from Studio Ghibli films. Recognize the figure above? It's the robot from Castle in the Sky! You gotta love it. Some fools try to rob a Chinese restaurant. But the robbery is thwarted because the restaurant employees can't speak English, and failed to understand the robbers' demands: Police: Robbery Thwarted After Chinese Restaurant Workers Fail To Understand Demands.

justin chon in the epic poster for 21 and over

Check out a triumphant, nearly-naked Justin Chon in this new poster for the upcoming comedy 21 and Over. Justin stars as a straight-A student who celebrates his 21st birthday with his two best friends the night before a big med school interview. As you can see, things get out of hand:

Man tries to rob kung fu studio. Bad idea.

Some criminals are just asking for it. Ask the would-be robber who tried to rob a kung fu studio. Really. In Pittsburgh, authorities are looking for a man who tried to rob a kung fu studio, but was thwarted by an instructor and his students: Kung fu instructor, students fight off would-be robber in Squirrel Hill.

An armed gunman walked into the Win-Win Kung Fu Studio in Squirrel Hill last week just as a night class had finished, and told everyone to get down. Turns out, he messed with the wrong disciples of kung fu. Not just instructor Joshua Wang, but his students too:

This one's for all the film fans in Philly. The 5th Annual Philadelphia Asian American Film Festival is off and running, celebrating and elevating the Asian American experience with dozens of culturally relevant film programs.

It's happening right now through November 17. So take a look at the schedule and make some plans to see some Asian American cinema. Here are some highlights:

watch the premiere of lolwork

Speaking of reality television, Bravo's new series LOLwork premieres this week. The show follows the behind-the-scenes office antics of staff members at ICanHasCheezburger -- you know, the funny cat photo website -- led by chief executive Ben Huh. You can watch the first episode online.

When I first heard they were making this show, I joked that I envisioned something like TMZ, but instead of employees standing around their desks dishing celebrity gossip, they discussed the merits of cat photos.

After watching the premiere, that's kind of what it actually is. Watch:

k-town season two trailer

Uh oh. Here comes trouble. K-Town is back. Love it or hate it, you watched at least some of the trashy reality web series everybody was talking about. Admit it! Hell, I watched the first season and I kind of hated myself a little for it... but no lie, I watched the whole damn thing. The second season premieres this month, promising to be "wilder and sexier than ever."

Here's the season two trailer:

the "make me asian" app is not amusing

Oh hells no. No, seriously. This is a real app. Here are some actual screenshots:

Good morning, America. Recovering from Election Night 2012? Of course, voters re-elected President Barack Obama, giving us another confetti-obscured glimpse of Konrad Ng (aka "that Asian guy with Obama's family") in the First Family victory huddle. That's always fun.

paperdoll's all or nothing china tour 2012

One of my favorite bands, PaperDoll, is going on tour. The New York City-based indie pop band is off on the All or Nothing China Tour 2012 in support of their recently released sophomore album Sashimi Deluxe.

This is the band's fourth time in China, with stops in major metropolitan cities including Shanghai, Yiwu, Ningbo, Hangzhou, and Kunshan. Here's the tour schedule -- pass it along to your friends in China:

Hell yes for The Walking Dead fans. For your information, this week's totally insane, game-changing, all-hell-breaks-loose episode was written by Sang Kyu Kim. You can thank him for crushing your soul with that nut-kick of an hour.

David Chang in PBS series 'The Mind of a Chef'

This one's for the food fans. Executive producer Anthony Bourdain's new TV show The Mind of a Chef premieres on PBS this Friday, November 9.

Season one of the 16-episode travel-cooking series follows the adventures of New York City chef and restaurateur David Chang in the kitchen and beyond. I think it looks pretty cool. Here's a sneak peek of the show:

get off your ass and vote, asian america

Election Day, my friends. Time to get off your ass, find your polling place, and exercise your right to vote. It's not just votes for who will lead this country, but also for the issues and offices that affect you on the state and local level. If you don't think your vote matters, then you are dumb.

To be honest, I don't know whole lot about these groups, but I do know they're pretty darn popular. And it just so happens that I have two extra copies of the DVD. Anyone want to take it off my hands? Yes, I am giving away the I AM: SMTOWN Live World Tour in Madison Square Garden DVD to one lucky winner.

justin lin producing/directing hibernation and subdivision

More Justin Lin movie projects! The director of Fast Five and Better Luck Tomorrow is attached to direct and produce the sci-fi thriller Hibernation: Justin Lin to Direct Sci-Fi Thriller 'Hibernation.'

The details of Hibernation's plot are being kept under wraps, but according to producer Troy Craig Poon, it's a "dynamic futuristic thriller." Cool.

News also recently broke that Justin will produce the sci-fi comedy Subdivision through his Universal Pictures-based production company Barnstorm Pictures: Universal, Justin Lin team on 'Subdivision.'

So I've lost count. How many movies is Justin attached to produce or direct? He's currently hard at work shooting the sixth Fast and Furious movie (which looks pretty damn awesome), in addition to several other projects:

campaign flier features candidate's face on chinese food containers

Hey, candidates! Election Day is tomorrow! You've still got plenty of time to get your racist campaign material out there. Here's a candidate who's trying extra hard to go full anti-China on his opponent: Ohio Republican Mailer Features Chinese Food Containers, Chopsticks To Tar Democrat.

As all political campaigns know these days, the best way to demonize your opponent is to paint them as China's best friend. Ohio congressional candidate Rep. Jim Renacci recently sent out a campaign flier prominently featuring illustrated images of opponent Rep. Betty Sutton on a Chinese food take-out container, complete with that stereotypical wonton font.

Yup. This one doesn't win any points for subtlety:

Hurricane Sandy: The Storm's Impact on Immigrant Workers and Organizations: "The stories of Hurricane Sandy's aftermath in the mainstream and alternative press have so far included some acknowledgement of public sector workers, transit workers, and immigrant workers. "They keep the city running!" runs the triumphant script. This is true. In a sense, it is always true, but never more clear than when the rest of the city is still recuperating at home. Few talk, however, about how this may be linked to the lack of any other option -- that the necessity to keep working is over-riding concerns about health or safety, for instance. Fewer still acknowledge that transit work, food delivery, and driving are some of the more dangerous and vulnerable occupations a person can hold, even without post-storm conditions."

my very own superhero in shattered: the asian american comics anthology

My fellow comic book geeks! Next week marks the official launch of Shattered, follow-up to the groundbreaking Asian American comics anthology Secret Identities, from editors Jeff Yang, Parry Shen, Keith Chow and Jerry Ma.

While the first collection focused on the conventions of traditional superhero comics, this new volume explores some darker and edgier genres to subvert and shatter Asian stereotypes.

The book features an impressive lineup of contributors, including leading comics creators Bernard Chang, Sean Chen, Cliff Chiang, Larry Hama, Sonny Liew, Takeshi Miyazawa, Christine Norrie, Greg Pak, G.B. Tran, Gene Yang and more, as well as folks from the film and literary world like Tanuj Chopra, Michael Kang, Jamie Ford, Gary Jackson and Bao Phi.

I managed to slip something in the book too.

your halloween costumes, part two

sorority scavenger hunt item: "hook up with three asians"

Growing up, living your life and just being Asian in America, you will inevitably have encounters, big and small, that smack you upside the head and remind you of a hard truth: you are different.

Well, hell, everybody's different. But the hard truth of these encounters -- whether it's a kid making "ching chong" eyes at you on the playground, or someone taking a baseball bat to your head -- is that there are those who perceive you as different. And that difference, to them, makes you something other than human.

In this piece for The Daily Pennsylvanian, graduate student Dephanie Jao describes a recent seemingly innocuous street encounter where she, as a person of Asian descent, was dehumanized: Hunting Asians.

Basically, a Drexel University sorority recently held some kind of scavenger hunt event where one of required items was to "hook up with three Asians." Yeah. So on a Sunday night, Dephanie unexpectedly had to deal with some assholes:

This week in Oakland, 28-year-old Giselle Esteban was found guilty of first-degree murder in the death of her former high school friend, nursing student Michelle Le: Michelle Le Murder Trial: Giselle Esteban found guilty in nursing student's 2011 death.

Le went missing from a Kaiser Hospital parking garage in May, launching a massive Bay Area search. Her heavily decomposed remains were found months later in a secluded area in the East Bay.

Early on, investigators quickly zeroed in on Esteban, whose past behavior -- including making death threats -- revealed a jealous obsession with her former friend. According to prosecutors, she was enraged at Le's friendship with Scott Marasigan, with whom Esteban has a young daughter:

sergio romo makes a statement

As a lifelong fan of the San Francisco Giants, this has been an amazing week. Yesterday, the city celebrated the team's awesome four-game World Series sweep over the Detroit Tigers with an orange-and-black ticker tape parade.

And today, everybody's talking about pitcher Sergio Romo's t-shirt. The Giants' bearded Mexican American star closer took the opportunity to make a statement, rocking a shirt on the parade route that boldly proclaimed "I JUST LOOK ILLEGAL." Love it: Sergio Romo not afraid to speak his mind.

I bring it up here because this article mentions that the shirt is sold by Wicky Tees in Los Angeles, founded by Jack Chan. Sales for the shirt apparently exploded yesterday after the parade:
